Treasure Cay Beach, Marina & Golf Resort

Located on a peninsula on Great Abaco Island, Treasure Cay Beach, Marina & Golf Resort sits nestled in a small beach community amongst other rental properties and vacation homes. Spread out across the width of the peninsula, with the marina on one side and Treasure Cay Beach on the other, the hotel manages to maintain a laid-back vibe with a vibrant social scene. During the day, the beach is usually busy with guests and locals playing volleyball, water sports, or sunbathing. With plenty of kid-friendly activities -- including volleyball, the beach, the pool, and a game room -- it’s not uncommon to see families at Treasure Cay as well as couples. The pool area is usually busy, but not overrun by people -- with ample seating by the pool and inside Tipsy’s, guests can spread out. 

The nighttime scene ramps up at Tipsy’s, with live music and DJs spinning until late into the night. Expect a different experience at the bar every night of the week, as the hotel hosts themed evenings like bingo nights, fish fries, pizza parties, and pig roasts. These nights bring in a large crowd that mixes both hotel guests and locals. Private parties on boats docked at the marina are also common to see and hear. For a little quieter, more intimate evening, Spinnakers is more sophisticated, with the Upperdeck Lounge being the ideal spot for a quiet glass of wine. Coco’s Beach Bar offers a laid-back island vibe from morning to night with a casual atmosphere overlooking the beach. 

Make no mistake, though, this is in no way a pretentious or exclusive-feeling place. The look and feel throughout the property is humble and communal. Interiors are modern enough, but entirely homey, with lots of expected tropical art, wicker, island tones, and bold floral prints all around. It makes for a convincing enough island getaway, and is an ideal spot for those looking to balance kicking back and socializing.

Located off S.C. Bootle Highway, the resort is situated on a peninsula surrounded by white sand beaches and golf course greens. The hotel is located a 10-minute drive from Treasure Cay Airport and a 30-minute drive from Marsh Harbor Airport. Shuttle and taxi service is available to and from the airport for a fee. The 18-hole golf course is a 10-minute walk from the rooms and a five-minute golf cart ride. Treasure Cay Beach is a seven-minute walk from the rooms and a three-minute golf cart ride, which can be rented through the resort.

There is no “downtown” area to Treasure Cay and the few restaurants nearby are not within walking distance. Renting a car or golf cart to get around this area of Abaco is recommended for exploring outside the hotel grounds. There is a grocery store, liquor store, bakery, laundry self-service, convenience store, medical care center, and bank all built into the resort.

The rooms are situated on the marina side of the complex, with stunning sunset views overlooking the harbor. They are located in four townhouse-style buildings painted in shades of pink, green, yellow, and blue, and named Jasmine, Oleander, Bougainvillea, and Hibiscus. Noise from the docks and Tipsy’s can be heard from some of the rooms. In addition to the rooms detailed below, the hotel has a private beach house that can be rented.

There are three categories to choose from: Standard, Double, and Suite. Rooms in each townhouse are interconnected, with the option of being rented together or separately. Standard and Double Rooms are mostly modern and outfitted with dark wood veneer furniture, chartreuse accent walls, and white tile flowers. While the tropical-print bedding at least doesn't look dated, duvets would have been a sharper choice. Wall art is a mix of floral photography and slightly kitschier underwater paintings. It is worth noting that we did spot a bit of minor wear on furniture throughout all units when we visited.

Standard and Double Rooms are all located on the first floor of the townhouses, with two view options -- the garden view or the marina view -- available from the plastic-furnished patios. These rooms have have either a king-size bed or two twin-size beds, and are modestly sized, including a small dining area and closets for additional storage. A flat-screen TV, air-conditioning, mini-fridge, microwave, coffee set-up, and free Wi-Fi all come standard. Bathrooms are standard size with hairdryers, bathroom/shower combination, and plenty of counter space. Pump dispensers in the bathrooms feel unintentionally budget.

Suites are a bit more stylish, with more black and white tones appearing, and spacious loft layouts. These feature a full kitchen with white dishes, beige cabinets, and black appliances plus a separate dining area with a black high-top table and bar stool chairs. The living area features a modern black couch with a red futon mattress, funky rolled throw pillows, and "contemporary" accent furniture -- like black-and-chrome lamps -- that's starting to look a bit off-trend. For additional sleeping space, the couch pulls out into a trundle bed. A large flat-screen TV sits on top the entertainment system, which has been outfitted with a boom box. There's a canopy king-size bed sits in the upstairs loft area with a second smaller flat-screen TV. Suites have two full bathrooms. The tiny downstairs bathroom features a standing shower and not much vanity space. The upstairs bathroom is spacious and includes a shower/tub combo, hairdryer, and plenty of vanity space. 

As an expansive resort community, there's a good deal on offer here, though of course the main draw is the stunning beach. It has powdery white sand and turquoise waters -- keep in mind that given the size of the resort it will take several minutes to reach the beach on foot. A handful of white lounge chairs and orange umbrellas are available, as well as a volleyball set-up, some thatched huts, and a few hammocks. For many golfers, the 18-hole course at Treasure Cay is a special golfing experience having been designed by Dick Wilson, a leading American golf course designer. The traditional course requires precision and skill to play with well-placed bunkers and a tight back nine, but offers a quiet and relaxed atmosphere with stunning views of Treasure Cay. Golf clubs are available for rent from the resort.

The 150-slip marina at Treasure Cay is centrally located in relation to the rooms, front desk, grocery store, and restaurants. Boaters can fill on up fuel and diesel at the marina as well. The outdoor pool overlooks the marina and is situated adjacent to Tipsy’s Seagull, the resort's lively bar. Surrounded by blue and white lounge chairs, there is plenty of space for guests to relax, sunbathe, or swim. Other nice extras include tennis courts, a bank, and a shopping arcade that holds a grocery store, laundry services, game store, convenience store, and ice cream shop. There is no dedicated fitness center, though the resort does offer a variety of water sports, all available for a fee. Free Wi-Fi is offered throughout the hotel, and golf cart rentals are available for those who prefer to navigate the resort or immediate area more quickly. 

Coco’s Beach Bar and Sea Grille is Treasure Cay’s main restaurant, and is the only one that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Located directly on the beach, Coco’s serves standard breakfast options like omelets, pancakes, egg sandwiches, coffee, plus casual grill fare for lunch and dinner. Classic Bahamian dishes of cracked conch and conch chowder are a local highlight. The open-air laid-back restaurant is decorated with fishing nets, life preservers, and street signs. The restaurant's bar sits at the middle of the space, creating two different atmospheres for guests to choose from; one side of the restaurant is super-casual, with red, white, green, and blue picnic tables plus a wooden patio. The other side is still casual, but the tables are set with tablecloths and rolls of silverware. Outdoor seating overlooking the beach is available in abundance.

Spinnakers Ocean Grille and Wine Bar is located near the rooms at Treasure Cay and offers a little more upmarket sophistication for guests. Spinnakers serves prime rib and seafood dinners looking out over a quiet garden. The Upperdeck Lounge, the bar area of Spinnakers, is a spacious area with a long bar serving beer, wine, mixed drinks, and specialty cocktails. There are plenty of places to sit, eat, and sip cocktails on the blue booths and light wicker chairs. Wicker stools are at the main bar as well for additional seating. The open and spacious main dining area of Spinnakers is the more refined space, with plenty of space for parties of all sizes at bamboo tables and chairs set with blue and white table cloths. 

Tipsy’s Seagull Pool Bar and Junkanoo Java share the same area next to the pool and marina. Serving casual fare in an equally casual setting, both dining options are great for light snacks, coffee, and proximity to the resort's rooms. Junkanoo Java is open from mid-day until evening and serves coffee drinks as well as wings, burgers, and fried chicken. Tipsy’s Seagull Poolside Bar is the center of the action at Treasure Cay, featuring theme nights -- including pizza nights, pig roasts, bingo, and fish fries -- as well as nightly DJs and dancing late into the night.
