The saying “you get what you pay for” doesn’t always apply when it comes to traveling the globe. Sure, many bucket list destinations are worth their eye-popping price tags, but there are plenty of affordable — and arguably cooler — alternatives to these well-trodden, budget-busting destinations. Below, we listed the most expensive spots in the world and offered an alternative where you can save or stretch your dollars.

1. Skip Switzerland and Visit Slovenia

Tower on island on Lake Bled in Slovenia

Famous for its alpine skiing and storybook villages, Switzerland is a far cry from a budget-friendly destination. Mid-range and upscale hotel rooms cost between $200 and $500, with cities like Zurich and Geneva on the higher end. Lift day passes hover between $40 and $70, depending on location, and après-ski activities and dinner are often much steeper.

Instead, hop over northeastern Italy to Slovenia, where hotels, ski passes, and delectable cuisine can be had for a fraction of the cost. Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, is home to a vibrant array of cultural attractions. Come summer, bustling cafes overflow into the cobblestoned streets, while Christmas market stalls line the riverside during winter. Ljubljana is one of central Europe’s most affordable capitals, with plenty of mid-range options well under $100.

To the northwest, Lake Bled rivals the tranquility of Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne. Stunning views over the emerald water can be had from Bled Castle. The short, but steep, hike is well worth the effort to admire the nearby Julian Alps and explore the castle walls, museum, and medieval frescos. Just to the west, Triglav National Park encompasses much of Slovenia’s alpine terrain, including extensive hiking trails and the country’s premier ski resorts. Though these mountains can be easily reached in two to three hours from Ljubljana, consider hitting the slopes at Krvavec, if you’re short on time. The mountain includes 18 miles of ski runs and is a mere six miles from the capital.

Slovenia Hotel Pick: City Hotel Ljubljana

2. Skip Singapore and Visit Malaysia

Skyline of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at sunset

Singapore offers a dynamic mix of cultures in an extraordinarily modern setting. Unless you’re booking a hostel or an out-of-the-way guesthouse, expect to dish out between $150 and $300 for mid-range and boutique properties. A lively street food scene keeps dining costs down, but a night on the town can be costly compared to nearby cities, such as Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh.

Separated by the narrow Johore Strait, neighboring Malaysia is an often-overlooked destination with a capital that rivals Singapore’s multiculturalism and modernity without the hefty price tag. Comfortable accommodations can be had for $50 to $75, while $100 or more will fetch a plush room with a view of the Petronas Towers. Kuala Lumpur has emerged from its humble origins as a remote tin-mining community. Today, mosque minarets and colonial buildings mix with skyscrapers and monorail tracks. The city maintains its blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences, which is very apparent in its assortment of street-side cuisine, architecture, and art museums. Outside the city, Malaysia’s landscape unfolds into hillside tea plantations, lush jungles, and beautiful beaches. To the north, the temperate Cameron Highlands make for a perfect escape from the city, if you wish to rejuvenate on locally grown tea and leisurely hikes. Off the western coast, George Town on Penang island boasts vibrant street art and cozy cafes housed in a labyrinth of colonial-era buildings. Wildlife and nature enthusiasts should head to Malaysian Borneo to spot wild orangutans and elephants, go scuba diving, and trek through dense rainforests. Malaysia’s tallest mountain — Mount Kinabalu — is located here and can be summited in a demanding two days.

Malaysia Hotel Pick: Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

3. Skip Japan and Visit Taiwan

Skyline of Taipei, Taiwan at sunset

East Asia’s most expensive destination sits atop many travel bucket lists. Japan’s popularity is well-warranted, thanks to its blend of traditional and modern culture, renowned and innovative cuisine, stunning mountain scenery, and exceptionally easy transportation. However, it’s far from budget-friendly. Mid-range hotels will set you back $200 or more, while luxury accommodations can exceed $1,000 per night. The famed train system may be convenient, but a one-way trip from Tokyo to Kyoto costs around $120.

Farther south, the compact island of Taiwan delivers comparable attractions — a buzzing, modern capital, an excellent food scene, and striking natural beauty — all for a fraction of the cost. Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, may lack the glitz of Tokyo on the surface, but dive a bit deeper and discover dozens of night markets, world-class museums, grand monuments, and a lively LGBTQ nightlife scene. For starters, head to Shilin Night Market to dine like the locals. This massive indoor food court houses over 500 stalls and draws thousands to feast on oyster omelets, dim sum, and stinky tofu. Heading south from Taipei, the island is divided by imposing mountains, making it difficult to cross from the populated western coast to the rugged, eastern shorelines. On the east side, Taroko National Park attracts visitors with its deep gorge formed by the rushing Liwu River. A network of trails leads up into the high mountains, across suspension bridges, and past gushing waterfalls. On the west coast, urban centers, such as Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung offer a wide array of lesser-known regional delicacies, temples, botanical gardens, and more.

Taiwan Hotel Pick: Palais de Chine Hotel

4. Skip the United Arab Emirates and Visit Oman

Aerial view of a market in Oman

The United Arab Emirates has become an increasingly popular destination, especially in futuristic Dubai and cosmopolitan Abu Dhabi. Though these cities possess unique attractions, such as the Louvre, elite private island enclaves, and the towering Burj Khalifa, they are incredibly expensive. Dubai’s most budget-friendly hotels hover between $150 and $250, while luxury options creep above $500 a night.

Meanwhile, farther east on the Arabian Peninsula, Oman’s understated capital and extraordinary landscapes can be explored without breaking the bank. Muscat, Oman’s capital, operates at a slow pace, which stands in stark contrast to the style and glamour of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. That said, Muscat’s streets, forts, and mosques are immaculately maintained. Climb the steps up Mutrah Fort, which is perched on a cliff overlooking the harbor and corniche. The corniche is ideal for walking and people-watching from outdoor cafes. The adjacent Mutrah Souq adds to the bustle, with hundreds of vendors selling traditional handicrafts, local cuisine, spices, and more. Muscat is the most expensive part of Oman, but mid-range hotels can still be found for under $100 per night.

Oman’s splendor resides in its remote corners, which encompass seemingly endless sand dunes, dramatic coastlines, high mountains, and deep canyons. These canyons, known as wadis in Arabic, are the collecting point for Oman’s limited rainfall. Millennia of erosion have created striking rock formations and winding channels in the sandstone. Several of these wadis, such as Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid, serve as refreshing swimming holes from the intense desert heat. Be sure to go to the end of Wadi Shab, where you’ll swim 40 feet through a narrow gap in the rock face to reach the waterfall and cavern behind. It’s advisable to rent your own wheels to visit Oman’s interior. The Jebel Sham mountain range, known as the “Grand Canyon of Arabia,” features excellent hiking trails and abandoned stone villages. A car will also come in handy for traversing the dunes at Wahiba Sands, which can reach as high as 300 feet. The local Bani Wahiba tribe operates a handful of camping and glamping-style accommodations.

Oman Hotel Pick: Juweira Boutique Hotel

5. Skip the Maldives and Visit Mauritius

Image half above and half below the water, showing a woman scuba diving in the waters of Mauritus

Scattered across thousands of islands in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is undeniably a gorgeous destination. Most resorts occupy their own private islands, with luxury cabanas dotting the white-sand beaches or stilted above the tantalizing blue water. There has been a slight shift in affordability now that locals are permitted to build and operate their own accommodations. However, the Maldives’ remoteness requires that the majority of food and supplies be imported, keeping prices high. Furthermore, luxury still reigns supreme here, with boutique properties still charging around $200 per night and luxury prices soaring into the thousands.

The Indian Ocean has no shortage of idyllic islands, so stretch your travel budget further and head to Mauritius instead. Though you won’t have the island to yourself, there are plenty of beaches and lagoons to enjoy in tranquility. Most beachfront hotels offer a variety of water-centric activities, such as kayaking, submarine safaris, glass-bottom boat trips, and snorkeling. Mauritius is surrounded by barrier reefs, providing calm water and excellent diving opportunities. It’s worth heading off your property to explore the island’s 100 miles of beaches and mingle with the locals. Flic en Flac and Grand Baie are ideal choices for swimming and water sports.

On the island’s southern end, Le Morne’s public beach is perfect for beachcombing, watching kitesurfers, and admiring the Le Morne Brabant mountain. If you can manage to pull yourself away from the beach, Black River Gorges National Park is a worthwhile day trip. Here, you can splash under waterfalls and enjoy shaded hikes through dense forests. Be sure to keep an eye out for the elusive flying fox. Mauritius isn’t exactly cheap, but all-inclusive resorts can be booked for around $200 per night, which is an immense value compared to the Maldives.

Mauritius Hotel Pick: Tropical Attitude

6. Skip Paris and Visit Montreal

Aerial view of Montreal, Canada on a clear day

The romance of Paris may be enticing, but your wallet may have other things to say about it. Montreal offers just as much as Paris, at a much more affordable price. Flights to Paris can be expensive, and not only are flights to Montreal cheaper, but it is also a very drivable destination from many parts of the U.S. as well.

While the cities share a language, that is not their only similarity. Montreal is swimming with french restaurants like Brasserie Le Pois Penché an authentic Parisian brasserie, and Henri Brasserie Française, which is located in a historical building with decor that makes you feel you have been brought back to 19th-century Paris.

To really feel like you are in a European city, head to Old Montreal. The cobblestone streets, quaint buildings, and gorgeous cathedral will make you believe you are across the Atlantic.

Montreal has its share of museums, including the Contemporary Art Museum of Montreal, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts) Pointe-à-Callière – Museum of Archaeology and History, and the Space for Life which is the largest natural sciences museum complex in Canada.

The music scene in Montreal is also hopping, with venues like the Place des ArtsL’Olympia and Rialto Theatre, not to mention festivals like Osheaga and the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

Hotels are cheaper in Montreal than in Paris. A one-night stay at a luxury hotel in Montreal is around $500, and a similar hotel in Paris will cost you over $2000 a night. Average hotels are similarly priced at around $150/night, with Montreal hotels having a slight edge on affordability.

Mauritius Hotel Pick: Fairmont the Queen Elizabeth

7. Skip the French Riveria and go to Cinque Terre

The French Riveria is gorgeous; with stunning scenery comes high costs and overcrowding. So, while it’s a great place to visit, it’s best for luxury travelers. Luckily, Cinque Terre is just as beautiful and much less expensive, and it’s in Italy. Cinque Terre, meaning “Five Lands” in Italian, is a string of five villages that cling to the cliffs along the Italian Riviera. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for good reason.

The villages are picture-perfect (you’ve probably seen them on Instagram), with brightly colored houses cascading down the cliffsides to meet the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. The trails between the villages offer stunning views of the coastline and the vineyards that cling to the hillsides. The most famous trail is the Sentiero Azzurro, or the Blue Path, which connects all five villages and is perfect for avid hikers.

Cinque Terre has a rich history and culture. Visit spots like Castello di Riomaggiore, a medieval castle overlooking the Mediterranean Sea; the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Manarol, built in 1340, is the oldest church in Cinque Terre; the Oratory of Santa Marta; and the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Salute

While both locations can be pricey regarding accommodations, Cinque Terre has the edge. The average price per night for a hotel in Cinque Terre is $171, while in the French Riviera, it’s $215

Cinque Terre Hotel Pick: Hotel Porto Roca

8. Skip Spain and go to Portugal

Portugal and Spain are both Iberian countries with rich cultures, stunning landscapes, and delicious food. Portugal tends to be cheaper than Spain, especially when it comes to accommodation and dining. It also receives fewer tourists than Spain, making popular landmarks easier to visit.

The pastel-colored buildings and azulejo tilework offer a visual experience much different from Spain’s. In Lisbon, you can explore the colorful “Pink Street,” Rua Nova do Carvalho, which features the iconic pink street, colorful buildings, and a hopping nightlife.  While in Porto, places like the cathedral, Sao Bento Station and Capela Das Almas show off the stunning azulejo tilework.

While the beaches are absolutely stunning in both spots, those in Portugal are less crowded and will offer a more peaceful experience and plenty of space to set up for the day. Portinho Beach, nestled within the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park and is less than an hour from Lisbon features fine white sand and crystal clear turquoise waters. The Algarve region is known for its beaches and resorts, and is the perfect place for a Portuguese beach vacation.

Hotels are similar in price, with the average cost in Spain $110/night, and in Portugal $99.

Portugal Hotel Pick: Villa Vita Parc

9. Skip Cancun and go to Playa Del Carmen

Cancun is known for its large, all-inclusive resorts, which come with cost and crowds. Playa Del Carmen retains a more local vibe, where you’ll find a wider variety of locally owned restaurants, shops, and bars, allowing you to experience Mexican culture more directly.

Playa del Carmen offers more accommodation options that go beyond large, all-inclusive resorts. You can find boutique hotels, guesthouses, vacation rentals, and hostels catering to different budgets and travel styles. Stay at an upscale resort like the Viceroy Riviera Maya, or in a condo at the Maya Villa Condo Hotel & Beach Club.

Suppose you don’t want to be stuck at your resort your entire trip. In that case, Playa del Carmen is closer to the Mayan ruins of Tulum, Coba, and Chichen Itza and the Yucatan Peninsula’s cenotes (natural swimming holes), making them easier to access.

Playa del Carmen is generally considered slightly cheaper for food than Cancun, especially if you want to avoid the tourist traps. There are more local options for food, with Playa del Carmen’s large town center, which has local spots with lower prices. You’ll have to join the masses and get a taco at the famous El Fogon.  There is also a thriving street food scene in Playa del Carmen, with fresh fruit, tacos, and marquesitas- all much more affordable than the food you will find in Cancun. You can even take a tour that brings you to some of the best street food in Playa del Carmen.

Playa del Carmen has Cancun beat as far as hotel affordability goes. The average price per night for a hotel in Playa del Carmen is $81 while in Cancun it is $145, a pretty significant difference.

Our Playa del Carmen Hotel Pick: Royal Hideaway Playacar

10. Skip Prague and go to Budapest

Budapest skyline - Buda castle and Danube river
Arcady | Adobe Stock

While Prague is known for its Instagrammable fairy-tale architecture, Budapest has grand Parliament buildings and Buda Castle.  Budapest, however, is called the “City of Baths” due to its abundance of historic thermal baths that date back centuries, some housed in beautiful Ottoman-era architecture. It’s a truly unique cultural experience you won’t find in Prague. Generally, Budapest tends to be cheaper than Prague in terms of food, accommodation, and activities. It boasts a vibrant nightlife scene, particularly with its famous ruin bars – repurposed abandoned buildings transformed into trendy bars.

Besides the baths, Budapest has distinctive attractions that set it apart from Prague. Buda Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts medieval walls and cobblestone alleys, all with breathtaking views of the Danube. Explore the Hospital in the Rock beneath the castle, a fascinating network of caves that served as a hospital during World War II. Explore the tunnels, chambers, and exhibits to learn about this historical site.

Try traditional Hungarian food at some of the trendiest restaurants in Hungary, like Mazel Tov, the upscale ruin bar, or eat goulash at the traditional Gettó Gulyás

Hotels are similar in cost, although Budapest has more to offer.

Our Budapest Hotel Pick: Estilo Fashion Hotel

11. Skip Dublin and go to Galway

Dawid | Adobe Stock

Dublin may have the Guinness Storehouse, the Jameson Distillery, and EPIC, the emigration museum, but tourist powerhouses like those bring crowds, which you won’t find in Galway. Plus, you are close to some of Ireland’s most stunning landscapes, like the Aran Islands, Connemara National Park,  and the Cliffs of Moher.

While Dublin has become more tourist-friendly, Galway offers a more traditional Irish city vibe. Galway is home to the Claddagh Ring, and you can visit the Claddagh Ring Museum. Galway Cathedral and Galway City Museum offer a glimpse into the city’s history.

Galway also has a hopping restaurant scene, including more modern picks like the Michelin-rated Aniar, wine bar Éan, and the unique Pullman Restaurant, comprised of two original carriages from the Orient Express. Galway is also brimming with pubs, most of which are much less crowded than Dublin’s pubs.

You’ll find the hotels are cheaper in Dublin, with top-rated hotels costing around $185 a night in Dublin, and just $155 per night in Galway.

Our Galway Hotel Pick: Glenlo Abbey Hotel

12. Skip Napa and go to Fredericksburg, TX

Sunrise Over Red Corn Poppy Fields in Texas

Napa and Fredericksburg have many similarities: both are brimming with wineries and vineyards, quaint restaurants, and shopping—all popular with tourists. Fredericksburg has one advantage over Napa: it’s much cheaper.

Located about an hour north of San Antonio, and an hour and forty minutes west of Austin, Fredericksburg is a surprising, top-notch wine destination. With over sixty wineries in the area, it may pale compared to the nearly 500 you find in Napa Valley, but sixty is plenty for a fulfilling wine-filled trip.

Drink award-winning wine from Augusta Vin Winery, Ab Astris, Perissos Vineyards and Winery and Meierstone.  There are several wine tours you can take during your stay, so you don’t have to worry about bringing along a designated driver.  For something a little different, try the Wine Trolley

Downtown Fredericksburg is a hotbed of restaurants and shops, perfect for downtime between wineries or exploring after a day of wine tasting.

Accommodations are plentiful. Fredericksburg is known for its vacation rentals rather than hotels, although there are plenty of traditional hotels as well.

Rooms

Beachfront Honeymoon Suite at Excellence El Carmen/Oyster

Excellence Punta Cana underwent a $45 million renovation in 2017 that included all of the rooms. Six different suite types are housed within three-story pastel-colored buildings, and each unit is similarly decorated. The contemporary rooms have a midcentury-modern twist, thanks to wood paneling, pendant lamps, and powder blue sofas. Almost all units feature king-size beds, though a few rooms have two double beds. Stocked minibars have free beer, wine, liquor bottles, and snacks. Flat-screen TVs have a few English channels and Wi-Fi is free. Electronic panels control room temperature and do-not-disturb signs. Jetted tubs are placed near most of the beds — a romantic touch. Upgrades to swim-up suites are available. The downsides? Closets are small and some rooms overlook the grounds.

Excellence El Carmen opened in 2016 and its suites are some of the most attractive that we’ve seen in Punta Cana. They’re big and breezy, with marble floors, walls paneled in hardwood and neutral fabrics, and glass-enclosed whirlpools that overlook private balconies (most with some sort of ocean view). The whirlpools are ideal for enjoying the views and a soak, even in rainy weather. Rooms have one king bed or two queen beds that are framed by boxy nightstands and telescoping chrome reading lights. Tech features include iHome docks, wall-integrated USB plugs, and big internet-ready flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. Huge walk-in closets are fully shelved. All rooms also provide Nespresso coffee makers and free minibars stocked with beer, water, soda, and snacks (plus, full bottles of whisky, rum, and vodka). We love the spacious open-plan bathrooms, which include tan granite or black marble vanities plus double sinks. Glass-walled stand-up showers feature massive rainfall showerheads and all bathrooms include generous toiletries. Guests can upgrade to rooms with private rooftop pools or beach-facing swim-up pools.

Overall, El Carmen has built-in whirlpool tubs enclosed by glass while Punta Cana has soaking bathtubs in the rooms. We like the modern style of the rooms in El Carmen, but Punta Cana has a beautiful, traditional colonial style that might be more appealing to some tastes.

Style and Vibe

Grounds at Excellence El Carmen/Oyster

Excellence Punta Cana has an elegant colonial vibe, with tropical touches. Its open-air lobby is one of the few in Punta Cana with a view of the beach, so guests get an immediate introduction to paradise. You can smell the salty ocean as soon as the taxi door opens on arrival — at which point you’ll be welcomed with a glass of Champagne and a chilled towel. Wedding groups are popular (there are a few key spots around the property for ceremonies), but they aren’t the only guests. The partiers in celebration mode add some fun and liveliness to the resort. There’s no need to claim sun loungers at the beach or two pools (there’s a third private pool and dedicated beach area for Excellence Club guests), since the main pool runs the entire length of the resort and the beach is spacious. Overall, the architecture and landscaping are evocative of the Caribbean, with pastel colors, swaying palm trees, and manicured grounds. The resort’s front entrance is home to a gorgeous park-like space with lush foliage and bird-watching areas — the flamingos are worthy of a visit.

Excellence El Carmen exudes a modern and hip vibe. Parts of it even resemble a chic indoor/outdoor gallery space. Once inside, it’s all about sharp neutral decor, tranquil vibes, and breezy ocean views. Arriving guests step through the front doors into a hip lobby that’s more evocative of Miami than Punta Cana. The space features swish elements like funky, high-backed armchairs, sleek couches, and floor-to-ceiling shelves full of oversized art books. While interiors are sharp, it’s the hotel’s lush grounds that give it its away-from-it-all atmosphere. The grounds are dotted with four-floored buildings (designed to maximize ocean views) that are surrounded by perfectly manicured lawns, towering palm trees, and blossoming bougainvillea. Sculptures and outdoor lounging areas add a touch of chicness. It’s definitely not a party resort — the vibe is more about sipping martinis than pounding shots.

Overall, both properties don’t allow guests under the age of 18, so the ambience is relaxed. Excellence El Carmen tends to attract more millennials, while Excellence Punta Cana sees its fair share of baby boomers — many of them are repeat guests. You won’t find a full-blown party at either spot, but drinks flow heavily and guests are jovial.

Food and Drink

Magna at Excellence Punta Cana/Oyster

Excellence Punta Cana serves a variety of cuisines from around the world, divided into distinct and lovely restaurants. Best of all, all meals, snacks, and alcoholic drinks are included in the rates. Kitchen Table is an impressive buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Options cover everything from Dominican favorites to a la-minute options like omelets and carved roasts. There’s a huge selection of desserts, plus a self-serve Bloody Mary and Bellini bar. Agave serves Mexican and Tex-Mex fare for dinner, including seafood options — tableside entertainment is a fun touch. Chez Izabelle mimics a French bistro with a courtyard dining room open for dinner. The Grill serves a la carte burgers, sandwiches, and salads in a thatch-roof palapa. The dinner menu upgrades to prime steaks and shrimp. Flavor Market has a cozy Spanish-style ambiance and tapas for dinner. The Lobster House is one of the most popular restaurant choices for breakfast and dinner since it has a plethora of seafood and lobster dishes. Las Olas offers casual beachfront dining overlooking the waves but is only open for lunch. Spice serves specialties from Japan, China, Vietnam, and Thailand and has teppanyaki tables for live cooking. Note that teppanyaki tables require a reservation. Sports Bar offers giant flat-screen TVs and pub fare. Oregano overlooks the main pool and serves a casually elegant spread of pizzas, pasta, and salads. This is also the spot for late-night dining, as it’s open well after midnight.

Excellence El Carmen has almost all of the same restaurants as Excellence Punta Cana, but adds a few trendier offerings. Food Shark Food Truck serves tacos and nachos from a vintage bus. There’s a full juice bar with fresh veggies and fruits to be squeezed on demand. Aroma Cafe (which is also at the sister resort) upgraded to a rotating ice cream wheel instead of a regular display case of ice cream. Also, the Club Restaurant (only for guests who upgrade to club-level rooms) at El Carmen is more modern, and the bar has beautiful views.

Overall, the two properties have all-inclusive rates that include top-shelf liquor, lobster, and room service. Both resorts have several bars, including a swim-up pool, martini bar, beach bar, and sports bar. However, Excellence El Carmen is the winner if you’re looking for current foodie obsessions, like fresh juice and a food truck.

Entertainment and Pools

Pool at Excellence El Carmen/Oyster

People who want a prime beach without the crowds can relax and enjoy the setting at Excellence Punta Cana, or walk closer to Bavaro Beach for slightly calmer waves in which to swim. Walkers will be in paradise, as the beach continues for miles in either direction. Guests can lounge on comfy sun loungers under thatched umbrellas, and there are nearby bars for coconut cocktails and beer. There are two pools for all guests, plus a private pool for Excellence Club guests (though we didn’t see staff questioning anyone’s credentials on our visit, and none of the pools were crowded enough for it to matter). The main pool runs almost the entire length of the resort and fronts the ocean, plus it has a swim-up bar. This is where you’ll find the animations team organizing games and blasting pop music, but there’s ample space to get away from the party if you prefer. The second pool is in a garden setting, and has a waterfall infinity edge. The third, Excellence Club pool, is shallow and has partially submerged sun loungers, as well as ocean views.

In front of the resort, just past a row of cigar and clothing shops, sits the superb fitness center with modern Technogym cardio equipment and chlorophyll juice. The attached yoga studio has floor mats for stretching, as well as daily yoga/Pilates classes. There are also free activities like 30 minutes of horseback riding, tennis lessons, bike tours, Spanish lessons, and an intro to scuba diving. Check out the newsletter delivered to rooms each day for the schedule. Nightly entertainment rotates every week, so there should be a different show every night for seven days.

Excellence El Carmen isn’t the largest resort in Punta Cana, but it certainly packs in a mega-resorts worth of features — the most exceptional of which are outdoors. The property’s secluded beach is one of Punta Cana’s best. The sand is soft and the oceanfront is lined with palm trees, lounge chairs, and thatched umbrellas. Free water sports include kayaks and Hobie Cat catamarans. If lounging by the pool is more your thing, 23 freshwater pools are scattered throughout the resort, including one with ocean views.

The gym is modern and loaded with Technogym equipment. Free daily classes like yoga and stretching are available, and personal training sessions are also included in nightly rates. The resort has tennis courts and free lessons. Ping-pong, pool tables, and a life-size chess board are also fun. Plus, bike tours, Spanish lessons, beach volleyball, archery, pool games, water aerobics, poker tournaments, and bingo are scheduled regularly. Nightly entertainment like live music, Michael Jackson impersonators, dance performances, and the weekly Dominican beach party (held indoors during inclement weather) get mostly positive reviews, but don’t expect to have your mind blown.

Overall, the resorts offer similar features (and almost identical spa and fitness centers), but Excellence Punta Cana has a slightly nicer beach and Excellence El Carmen has more swimming pools. Both resorts have late-night discos with dedicated DJs, but we found more people dancing at Excellence El Carmen.

13 Incredible Overwater Bungalows in the Maldives https://www.oyster.com/articles/incredible-overwater-bungalows-in-the-maldives/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 17:09:46 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/?p=510783

When dreaming of a luxe vacation in the Maldives, an overwater bungalow likely comes to mind immediately. After all, how much more secluded can you get than a private bungalow in the middle of the ocean on a small, remote island? However, we know from experience that some overwater bungalows aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. The Maldives isn’t cheap, and it would be a shame if your vacation were ruined because of below-par accommodations. Like we always say, you can’t return a bad vacation, so here is our list of the best overwater bungalows in the Maldives.

1. Gili Lankanfushi

Unsurprisingly, one of the Maldives’ best resorts boasts some of the top overwater bungalows in the archipelago. Gili Lankanfushi only has overwater villas — all massive with a rustic-luxe aesthetic. Most of the resort’s 46 overwater accommodations are Villa Suites, located off one of three jetties. Each sports an open-air living room, direct lagoon access, a rooftop dining deck, a terrace sundeck, and top-notch amenities like Bose sound systems and stocked minibars. Even better are the seven Crusoe Residences. These huge, stand-alone villas are only accessible by pontoon boat and feature noteworthy amenities like personal boats, direct ocean access off the shower, and hammocks just off the private sundeck. All villas are constructed from wood, feature upscale furniture and decor, and have an eco-friendly design that minimizes the need for air-conditioning and electric lights.

The Ocean Pool Villas at Kandolhu is not easy to forget. These residence-style overwater bungalows sport sleek and chic decor plus thoughtful, five-star features like well-stocked minibars, personal wine bars, soft towels, multi-country adapters, and in-room iPads. However, the highlight is the fully glassed-in bathrooms that offer an indoor/outdoor feeling and stunning overwater views. Private infinity plunge pools and a spacious wooden deck also sweeten the scene.

You’ll have a wide variety of culinary experiences to choose from. Enjoy a beverage at the overwater bar, get a tour of the on-site garden, and enjoy a garden-side tasting menu, eat at the on-site Japanese restaurant, delight in a cold treat poolside, or pick a bottle of fine wine in the wine cellar.

Sneak away from your bungalow and relax at the spa with a traditional spa treatment, or try the Meera Ayurveda Therapy, a “5,000-year-old alternative medicine system designed to correct imbalances in the mind and body and reawaken the consciousness.” The resort has daily morning yoga, a fitness center, and activities like snorkeling, diving, watersports, and off-site excursions.

2. Summer Island Maldives

The Water Villas at Summer Island Maldives are perfect for anyone who wants their semi-private slice of the resort’s gorgeous lagoon area and house reef. Located just off the main island via a boardwalk jetty, all villas feature a contemporary style, stocked minibars, floor cutouts in the sitting room (so you can steal a glimpse of the underwater world right from your couch), and a ladder with direct water access off the terrace. The villas face east or west, giving guests uninterrupted sunset or sunrise views. Bathrooms have walk-in rain showers, separate soaking tubs, and windows with some lagoon views.

Away from your bungalow, Summer Island has plenty to keep you occupied. Choose from four restaurants and bars when you’re peckish- including enjoying a beverage at the overwater bar. Have a picnic lunch on the beach, sail around the island on a sailboat, and enjoy live music. For the more adventurous, there is snorkeling, SCUBA diving, catamarans, and fun tubing. Just want to relax? Sit by the water, get a treatment at the on-site spa, or enjoy a yoga class.

3. W Maldives

The edgy and hip design of the W brand extends all the way to the Maldives, though there are a few touches that give the overwater villas at W Maldives their personality. In addition to standard in-room amenities like Bose sound systems, Bliss bathroom products, and overstocked minibars, some villas have features that help you take advantage of your position over the water. For example, the Spectacular Ocean Oasis and Fabulous Lagoon Oasis rooms have glass-bottom showers, while the Ocean Haven Suite sports a wraparound deck and two large panels of glass flooring.

Staying at W Maldives, you won’t go hungry, with three restaurants, pop-up dining throughout the week, two bars, and waterside service. With a pool, on-site spa, dive center, and snorkeling, you won’t get bored either. For a unique experience, book an excursion to Gaathafushi, a secluded, private island—perfect for a private party or a romantic night spent under the stars in complete privacy.

4. Jumeirah Vittaveli

With overwater bungalows with direct lagoon access and private pools, this luxury resort offers the best of both worlds. The local palapa-style architecture blends with upscale decor to create a space that feels both relaxing and luxurious without being pretentious. The property is designed to take advantage of the overwater location, with picture windows, beds facing the private sundeck, and even a cutout in the sitting area where you can watch the waves roll by right under your feet. Air-conditioning, Nespresso machines, minibars, and spa-like bathrooms are great additions to the view.

The resort suggests you can either energize or relax – whatever is right for you. Choose from yoga, spa treatments, or decompressing in a sauna for relaxation, or energizing at the fitness center or with a fitness program. The resort also offers one-of-a-kind experiences like movies or dining on the beach, booking a trip on a semi-submarine, or taking a class in their Muraca Art Studio.

Dining experiences include floating breakfasts in the pool, beachside dining, private dining and more.

5. Constance Halaveli

The overwater villas at Constance Halaveli measure 1,076 square feet and have a great, secluded vibe. The palapa-style design gives the villas extra island vibes, though you can expect upscale decor, vaulted ceilings, wooden floors, and spacious bathrooms inside. Outdoor furnished terraces have chic infinity plunge pools and direct ladder access to the lagoon. The Water Villas can be a bit of a walk from the island’s main facilities, though they are equipped with air-conditioning, minibars, and other five-star conveniences.

Drop the kids off at the Kids Club and book an excursion or spa treatment. You can also go diving, paddleboarding, snorkeling, trying your hand at beach volleyball, and more. Constance Halaveli is not without dining options, either. Four restaurants offer à la carte and buffet options. There are also two bars, one poolside and one overwater, along the longest jetty in the Maldives.

6. Constance Moofushi

There are two types of overwater villas at Constance Moofushi, but both are loaded up with air-conditioning, stocked minibars, outdoor decks, free Wi-Fi, and Mac minis. All overwater bungalows are stilted above the turquoise lagoon and feature upscale island decor incorporating rope, wood, and ocean motifs. Large wooden terrace areas have sun loungers, chairs, and shade. Standard Water Villas have privacy walls, though their location leaves them open to interruptions from the occasional swimmer in the lagoon. Senior Water Villas have more privacy, are larger, and boast extras like private soaking tubs off the terrace and direct lagoon access.

The beach at Constance Moofushi is steps away from South Ari Atoll, a house reef housing stingrays, lionfish, and snappers. BlueTribe offers PADI certificate courses, snorkeling equipment, and boat excursions for guests who want to glimpse the stunning aquatic life. The resort has two restaurants and two bars, and all-inclusive options are available for booking. There is an on-site spa, and a fully equipped gym.

7. Velassaru Maldives

Velassaru’s overwater bungalows and villas have a chic look, including high vaulted ceilings, sexy dark wood, and contemporary furniture. These units also have awesome tropical touches, like polished coconut shell accents, palapa roofs, and folding glass panel doors that open onto the terrace. You’ll also find open-plan bathrooms stocked with L’Occitane products in the Water Villas and personal infinity pools out on the terrace of the Water Bungalows.

Between diving, snorkeling, and watersports, those who love water adventures have plenty to choose from. Eight restaurants and bars, an on-site spa, and private excursions are available to keep your days full of activities.

8. Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa

Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa has several different overwater room types. Leading the pack is the Water Suite, a two-bedroom presidential suite (nearly twice the size of a regular water villa) with a private infinity-edge plunge pool and a massive deck overlooking the ocean. Inside, you’ll find an upscale tropical style featuring wood vaulted ceilings, polished wood floors, and sophisticated furniture. Extra perks include access to the island clubhouse and its exclusive happy hours, mixers, an additional pool, and sweeping views. Bonus: It’s located a quick, 30-minute speedboat ride from the airport.

The resort does not disappoint in terms of dining options. It offers everything from in-villa dining to beachside dining, bars, and traditional restaurants. There is an on-site spa, freshwater pool, and kids club. If you want something a little more adventurous, book an experience with a marine biologist to explore the coral reef and learn about Marriott’s dedication to marine conservation.

9. Dusit Thani Maldives

All three overwater villa categories at Dusit Thani Maldives have their private plunge pool. They also feature thatched roofs, minimalist white decor with occasional pops of color, hardwood floors, and a fantastic island vacation vibe. Bathrooms are luxe with separate soaking tubs, rainfall showers, and Molton Brown bath products, while in-room amenities include Nespresso machines and minibars with wine chillers. Interiors are spacious, and the terraces are large, outfitted with sunbeds, cabanas, walkways with direct water access, and plenty of room to throw down a picnic or do some yoga — all with the views of the glittering lagoon.

Other features at the resort include an Ocean Dive Center, immersive experiences like a nature walk, a local island tour, guided meditations, motorized and non-motorized water equipment, and manta sanctuary snorkeling. Choose from eight dining options, including private on-beach dining, and a floating breakfast. Daily events, an on-site spa, fitness center, hot and cold jacuzzis, sauna, kids club and pools round out the activities for a truly special stay.

10. Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru

The Water Villas at Maafushivaru are the most popular places to stay, though many will argue that there’s no bad room on the island. Each Water Villa is perfectly placed with either an east- or west-facing position, making for remarkable sunrise or sunset views through the large picture windows or right out on the private terrace. You’ll also get a spacious, contemporary bedroom, separate changing area, and bathroom with a walk-in shower, VOYA bath products, and a separate soaking tub that overlooks the deck.

You’ll arrive by seaplane to this luxurious resort, and that is just the beginning of your adventure. Whether you enjoy informative on-beach activities with the resident marine biologist, sink into tranquility at the spa, or explore the ocean’s floor at the PADI diving center, your days will not be dull at Maafushivaru.

Dining options are abundant, with casual dining, buffets and upscale restaurants all available within the resort. The Moodhu Grill features over water dining platforms with open floors to the sea below, and stunning views of the stars above. Meal plans are available so you don’t have to think about anything during your stay.

11. Diamonds Thudufushi

The Water Villas at Diamonds Thudufushi boast a contemporary European feel, thanks to their all-white and minimalist decor. The Jacuzzi Water Villas take the resort’s standard Water Villas up a notch by adding — you guessed it — a personal whirlpool out on the lagoon-facing terrace. All Water Villas have gorgeous wood parquet floors, a four-poster bed, iMac computers loaded with music and movies, a small corner bar, and luxe bathrooms. A big perk here is the massive outdoor terrace with covered and open sections, a dining table, sunbeds, and steps with direct lagoon access.

This all-inclusive resort has everything you will need for your luxurious stay. From buffets to a starlit dinner in the tropical garden featuring traditional Maldivian dishes, you’ll fully immerse yourself in your dining experience. When not eating or hanging out in your villa, the resort has plenty of activities to keep you busy. Try your hand at windsurfing or snorkeling, check in at the diving center, or book a treatment at the on-site spa.

12. Adaaran Prestige Vadoo

There are four different types of overwater villas at Adaaran Prestige Vadoo — Sunrise, Sunset, Japanese, and Honeymoon — each one has its own draw. For example, the Honeymoon Villas have extra perks like dual-level decks and a more private location, though all overwater villas feature a bamboo fence for privacy. Each villa has an outdoor wooden deck offering direct water access, a cushy daybed, a pair of sun loungers, and an infinity plunge pool. A king-sized platform bed, an outdoor jetted tub that connects to the bathroom, a stocked minibar, and a free bottle of bubbly round out the offerings.

The resort’s five restaurants and bars include fine dining, Japanese cuisine, and a barefoot beach restaurant. Spa treatments include body treatments, massages, and facials. Resort activities range from the more adventurous, like whale submarine voyages or diving, parasailing, and SCUBA diving, to tamer snorkeling and stand-up paddleboards. Your all-inclusive stay includes a glass of sparkling wine or tea upon arrival, daily evening high tea, evening sundown cocktails, complimentary snorkeling equipment, one beach dinner per stay, and a complimentary dolphin excursion.

13. Coco Bodu Hithi

This luxury resort has 100 individual villas (44 on sand and 66 over water), and the overwater options are the most popular. We particularly love the Escape Water Villas for their flexible design. Each unit is encased in floor-to-ceiling glass panels that can be opened up or partitioned into sections as you see fit. There’s also a gorgeous outdoor terrace with a personal infinity plunge pool and a two-person, deep soaking tub overlooking the lagoon. Additional thoughtful touches include Nespresso machines, free sparkling wine and fruit on arrival, disposable cameras, and flip-flops. Plus, the house reef is right under your feet.

Steps away from your villa you’ll find an array of dining options – from fine dining, traditional Japanese, Meditteranean and fine wine, they offer everything you need to satisfy your palate. On-site activities include an award-winning spa, sunrise/sunset yoga, diving, tours with a marine biologist and on-beach movies.

All-inclusive resorts run the gamut, from intimate properties with high-end facilities to cheap hotels with a party atmosphere. Whether in lush St. Lucia or more-developed Cancun, all-inclusive also vary in price, making them suitable for well-heeled honeymooners or budget-minded bachelorette groups. To help you get a feel for how much a week-long all-inclusive resort stay costs, we’ve plugged in May Saturday-to-Saturday travel dates in seven top destinations throughout the Caribbean and Mexico. Here’s what it costs for two adults to have a week-long stay in entry-level rooms across three price categories: luxury, mid-range, and budget. The average cost is $2,910 for a week’s stay, but you can find much cheaper options when you choose a budget resort.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Playa Blanca, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta Cana is a very popular destination in the Dominican Republic, offering some of the prettiest white-sand beaches in the Caribbean, warm weather year-round, and notoriously friendly staff. The town is mostly made up of large mega-resorts where tourists hole up and spend their days lounging and drinking (this is especially easy to do at the numerous all-inclusive properties). Rates are reasonable across the board, so travelers can easily find a hotel that suits their budget.

  • Luxury: Zoetry Agua Punta Cana is a romantic, quiet, and all-inclusive property along a beautiful, uncrowded beach. The 96 spacious suites have butler service, outdoor spaces, and impressive bathrooms. Unlimited dining, top-shelf drinking, and many activities are part of the rate. A week here will run about $2,972.

  • Mid-range: The lively, 658-room Catalonia Punta Cana Golf & Casino Resort is an all-inclusive hotel on pretty Bavaro Beach. It has contemporary decor, plenty of bars and eateries, non-motorized water sports, and evening entertainment. Seven nights here in a lower-category Junior Suite will cost $1,025.

  • Budget: Attracting a young, international crowd looking to party, the whala!bavaro is a dirt-cheap hotel with poor food but also clean rooms, three pools, and a location that’s close to the beach and bars. An all-inclusive stay here will cost about $574 for a week.

Cancun has it all: beautiful beaches abutting turquoise waters, ample nightlife opportunities, great snorkeling, and easy access to Mayan ruins. Sure, it’s known for party-hearty spring breakers, but there are also many hotel options for serene stays. Plus, given the downtown area, nearby attractions, and prevalent English, it’s easy to explore areas outside the resort grounds.

  • Luxury: Couples seeking a romantic stay will find the adults-only Excellence Playa Mujeres a good pick, thanks to its private resort community setting, luxe rooms with big whirlpool tubs, seven pools, multiple restaurants and bars, and high-end spa. Expect seven nights to cost around $4,988.

Pricing for Excellence Playa Mujeres

  • Mid-range: The beachfront Hotel Riu Cancun is a kid-friendly all-inclusive resort in the central part of the Hotel Zone. Buffet and a la carte restaurants, several bars (including a 24-hour sports bar), multiple pools, a spa, and kids’ club keep guests of all ages occupied. A week-long stay costs around $2014.

Pricing for Hotel Riu Cancun

  • Budget: The Oasis Palm Hotel is a family-friendly, Mexican-themed beach resort with extensive facilities — including several dining outlets, a large pool, and kids’ activities — but underwhelming rooms. A week’s stay here costs $1,335.

Jamaica

Travelers heading to Jamaica are generally interested in experiencing a bit of the local culture, which some Caribbean destinations tend to lack. Beautiful beaches and cliffs, delicious conch and jerk chicken, ubiquitous reggae performances, standout service, and convenient direct flights from many major cities make Jamaica a favorite Caribbean island.

  • Luxury: Located on a serene sandy beach, the Secrets Wild Orchid Montego Bay provides a beautiful, adults-only experience within easy reach of the airport. A plethora of restaurants, bars, outdoor activities, pools, and wellness facilities ensure guests have everything they need at their fingertips. Seven nights here costs $5.356.

Pricing for Secrets Wild Orchid Montego Bay

  • Mid-range: The 540-room Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort and Spa is a massive property, with an 86,000-square-foot pool complex, 10 restaurants, late-night entertainment, and eight bars with nearly 24-hour drinking opportunities. Rates here run about $1,842 for a week-long stay.

Pricing for Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort & Spa

  • Budget: The Holiday Inn Resort Montego Bay is dated and can get noisy, but a beachfront setting, affordable all-inclusive rates, and a good array of entertainment, activities, and water sports are big draws. A week here runs around $1,530.

On the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, Los Cabos encompasses three districts: the historic and more cultural San Jose del Cabo, resort-filled Cabo San Lucas, and The Corridor, which is the highway that connects the two. The area’s famous rock formation at Land’s End, excellent whale watching and scuba diving, and rugged oceanfront cliffs combine for a stellar Mexican vacation.

  • Luxury: The adults-only Pueblo Bonita Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort is considered one of the most romantic in the area, with 201 elegant rooms, gorgeous pools, a serene spa, and upscale eateries. Seven nights here will cost around $4,381 for two adults.

  • Budget: A good option for party-minded travelers, the Posada Real Los Cabos has live music every night, a prime beach spot, swim-up bar, and buffet meals. Although breakfast-only rates are available, all-inclusive rates for seven nights are a great value at $911.

A combination of gorgeous mountainous terrain and pretty beaches makes St. Lucia an excellent pick for those who love hiking as much as lounging on the sand. Ample water activities, tasty Creole cuisine, and an underdeveloped feel add to this beautiful island’s appeal. All-inclusive resorts aren’t as numerous here as previously mentioned locales, especially not in the budget to mid-range class, but there are still options for various prices.

  • Luxury: Providing incredible views of the island’s famous Pitons, Jade Mountain Resort is a romantic adults-only (16 and over) property. Each of the 29 large rooms has an open wall and (in all but the entry-level category) a private plunge pool. Impressive dining, a spa, and free daily yoga add value. Seven nights on the all-inclusive rate costs about $9,570.

Pricing for Jade Mountain Resort

Mid-range: Although an upscale property, the quiet Anse Chastanet Resort is in the middle of the pack for all-inclusive pricing in St. Lucia. It has 49 colorful rooms, top-notch restaurants that use fresh ingredients grown on-site, an abundance of activities, and a pretty spa. A week-long stay here on their all-inclusive plan will cost two adults about $4,375.

  • Budget: The Coconut Bay Beach & Spa Resort sits on a beautiful stretch of beach that’s ideal for kitesurfing, and is divided into an adults-only and family-friendly section. Five outdoor pools, a water park with a lazy river, and several dining outlets make this an all around great pick. Rates run about $3,443 for a week.

Although some areas of the Bahamas were hit hard by last year’s hurricanes, hotels, marinas, and attractions operate normally in Nassau, on Paradise Island and Grand Bahama Island, and across the Out Islands.

13 Amazing All-Inclusive Resorts for Honeymoons https://www.oyster.com/articles/top-all-inclusive-honeymoon-resorts/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/top-all-inclusive-honeymoon-resorts/#respond Wed, 20 Dec 2023 19:09:57 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/articles/62980-top-all-inclusive-honeymoon-resorts/

There’s no denying that the best part after saying your “I dos” is the honeymoon and spending the rest of your life together. Even better is having everything taken care of while on your post-nuptial vacation. No matter the destination, an all-inclusive resort takes the worries out of travel — that is, if you pick a top-notch property that won’t disappoint you. To help, we rounded up a list of romantic, honeymoon-worthy, all-inclusive hotels worldwide, from the Maldives to Botswana.

1. Gili Lankanfushi Maldives

Gili Lankanfushi Maldives
Oyster

Romantic? Yes. Luxurious? Undoubtedly. Expensive? Definitely. This stunning resort lies on a palm tree-packed private island, just 20 minutes from the airport. If the phrase private island wasn’t enough to woo you, the overwater bungalows, which have outdoor decks with gorgeous views, will surely seal the deal. Bare feet are encouraged, and a personal butler pampers each guest. Newlyweds can partake in a slew of activities — yoga, kayaking, windsurfing, canoeing, and sailing are all free, though several other excursions, like deep sea fishing and snorkeling, can also be arranged. Plus, the island is surrounded by beautiful white-sand beaches (not to mention each villa has direct access to the water), so couples can relax all day. It’s relaxed luxury at its finest — just ask tennis pro Novak Djokovic, who’s been spotted here.

2. Fowl Cay Resort, Bahamas

Fowl Cay Resort
Oyster

Exclusivity is the name of the game at Fowl Cay, a 50-acre private island resort in the Bahamas. With a 28-guest capacity, the hotel makes newlyweds feel like they have the place almost all to themselves. Following a boat ride from the airport, guests can enjoy three private beaches, free kayaks and snorkeling gear, and personal boats for daily excursions. Six one- to three-bedroom villas with water views also await. That said, this level of luxury is reflected in the nightly rates.

3. Jade Mountain Resort, St. Lucia

Jade Mountain Resort
Oyster

In a class of its own, Jade Mountain Resort is one of the most romantic hotels in the Caribbean — nay, the world — thanks to its incredible Piton views. The ride to the resort can be rough, but the doting service, hushed ambiance (no TVs or children allowed), and open-air restaurant make it all worthwhile. The suites — referred to as “sanctuaries” — are a real treat, too. Through an open fourth wall, each enormous room overlooks the sea. Some rooms even have private in-room infinity pools for soaking with your sweetheart. Remember there’s no beach on the property (the closest beach is a short shuttle ride or hike away), but privacy-seeking couples will find just what they need here.

4. Tadrai Island Resort, Fiji

Tadrai Island Resort
Oyster

Located in the Mamanuca Islands, this adults-only hotel ensures that honeymooners and couples can enjoy some R&R without getting interrupted by wailing kids. Hole up with your honey in one of the villas (all feature private terraces with small plunge pools facing the ocean), indulge in free activities like kayaking, fishing, hiking, snorkeling, and sailing, chill out on the beach or in the beautiful infinity pool, or take in the views (every angle of Tadrai faces the turquoise sea).

5. Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle, Thailand

Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle
Oyster

Despite its jungle location in the famed Golden Triangle — and only being accessible by boat — this all-inclusive resort is not lacking in luxury. The hotel has a lovely open-air spa and luxury tents with antique-style bathtubs, outdoor rainfall showers, and balconies overlooking the river and jungle. There’s also a small pool in the forest. A minimum two-night stay is required, though you’ll wish to stay forever.

6. The Caves, Jamaica

The Caves
Oyster

With private cottages and suites set along dramatic seaside cliffs, this all-inclusive resort ticks all the boxes of a premier honeymoon pick: romantic, upscale, and intimate. Kids under 16 aren’t allowed, which helps preserve the calm ambiance, plus added perks include a private Jacuzzi and romantic candlelight dinners for two inside a cave. However, a stay here isn’t cheap.

7. Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun, Mexico

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun
Oyster

Set on a private white-sand beach, this adults-only, all-inclusive resort’s secluded location makes it one of our top picks in Mexico for honeymooners. In addition to the buffet, couples have a range of high-quality dining options, including French cuisine and romantic dinners for two on the beach (the latter costs extra). More to fall in love with: a full-service spa with couples’ treatments on the beach, several swimming pools, and water sports like kayaking and snorkeling.

8. Zoetry Agua Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Zoetry Agua Punta Cana
Oyster

Zoetry Agua Punta Cana is as honeymoon-perfect as it gets: an uncrowded white-sand beach, spacious suites, a pristine pool, a gorgeous spa, and free on-site activities like yoga, snorkeling, and a horseback riding session all cater to couples. To top it off, the atmosphere is serene — thanks partly to a difficult-to-reach location and a lack of kid-friendly amenities.

9. Los Altos de Eros, Costa Rica

Los Altos de Eros

Set on a mountaintop and accessed via a steep, rocky road, this upscale, adults-only boutique hotel is fairly isolated — and that’s part of its appeal. The other part of the draw is its rustic full-service spa, free daily yoga classes, open-air fitness facility, and a free-form pool that overlooks the mountains and valleys of the Guanacaste region.

10. andBeyond Xaranna Okavango Delta Camp, Botswana

Guests can witness exotic wildlife, like lions and hippos, and relax in luxurious tents that feature private plunge pools.

11. Constance Moofushi, Maldives

Set on a small private island, the Constance Moofushi all-inclusive resort offers couples a secluded atmosphere. The property is within 30 minutes of the world’s best dive spots and has an excellent house reef. For a more laid-back approach, guests can check out the spa, which is situated on a wooden jetty over the sea. (Couples treatments should be booked ahead of time.) Meanwhile, the 110 rustic-chic rooms are sophisticated, artistic, and well-equipped with premium minibars, top-notch entertainment systems, and stunning sea views — some are even directly over the water.

A Caribbean island vacation is already romantic, but adding a beautiful beach, a high-end spa with couples’ treatments, and an adults-only resort only enhances the amorous ambiance. However, the Dominican Republic attracts lots of families and party groups as well, so couples looking to relax together should stay away from the tourist-heavy Bávaro area of Punta Cana and the bustling capital of Santo Domingo. In addition to spa time, throw in a private oceanfront dinner, a catamaran cruise, and even a sunrise hot air balloon ride to up the romance factor.

For Family Vacations in the Dominican Republic

With beautiful beaches, theme parks, and resorts packed with kid-friendly features, the Dominican Republic offers families an easy and fun vacation. Certainly, the most family-friendly area is Bávaro, a quick 20-minute ride from the Punta Cana International Airport. There, visitors of all ages will likely enjoy Bávaro Adventure Park, where activities include zip-lining, paintball, and ATV rides, in addition to sea life-focused Dolphin Island Park and Seaquarium Punta Cana. Opt for an all-inclusive resort filled with amenities such as a kids’ club, water sports, a plethora of restaurants, and daytime activities.

Top beaches include the remote and undeveloped Playa Rincon, near the eastern tip of the Samana Peninsula; Playa Bayahibe on the southern coast near La Romana; and Playa Grande on the northern coast, an hour’s drive from Cabarete. Budget-conscious travelers will have several well-reviewed hotels to choose from in the Dominican Republic. Solo travel may be associated with destinations like Thailand or Rome, but the Dominican Republic shouldn’t be left off that list. For starters, it’s often more affordable, requires less travel, and provides a great mix of relaxation and fun. There are hostels for travelers seeking dirt-cheap room rates and a community environment, but there are also many resorts with organized daytime activities and evening fun conducive to socializing with fellow solo travelers. Island boat tours, nightclubs, and rum-tasting tours are additional opportunities for meeting other tourists.

No need to head to Costa Rica for zip-lining or Australia for scuba diving, as both can be done in the Dominican Republic, in addition to other adventurous activities. Scape Park is a natural theme park where visitors can zip-line into the water, swim in a cave and hidden cenote, explore caverns, and interact with animals such as horses and monkeys. There are several great scuba diving spots off the coast, plus travelers can snorkel among colorful sea life, take helicopter rides over the Caribbean Sea, and go off-roading in Flintstone-themed buggies.

For Sustainable Vacations in the Dominican Republic

Traveling sustainably has become more and more popular with each passing year, as tourists look to lessen their environmental impact while still enjoying a vacation. When planning a sustainable getaway, steer clear of destinations that have been plagued by over-tourism, avoid using single-use plastic water and toiletry bottles, and opt for nonstop flights instead of flights with layovers (which uses far more carbon emissions).

1. The Love Hotel Design: Hotel Amour, Paris

Room at Hotel Amour

Wait. In the bottom left corner, is that..? Yes, yes it is. In fact, Hotel Amour is replete with phallic and nude-y paraphernalia. The hotel’s design was inspired by the Japanese model of love hotels, and the owners have invested a tidy sum of money in developing the concept; for example, they hired the services of well-known fashion designer Chantal Thomass to design certain rooms, like the one shown above, that are sure to get guests in the mood for, well, “amour.” Appropriately situated in the heart of the Pigalle quarter, which is known among tourists for its sex shops and adult theaters, the hotel is just a 10-minute walk from the infamous Moulin Rouge.

2. The Swinger-Friendly Policy: Desire Pearl Resort & Spa, Riviera Maya

Beach at Desire Pearl Resort and Spa, Riviera Maya

The Desire Pearl is a couples-only all-inclusive resort that caters to those looking for a party scene; and all areas of the resort are completely clothing-optional. While couples can remain tete-a-tete on the white-sand beach or in the spacious rooms, most opt to join others at the pool’s swim-up bar or in the sexy nightclub, complete with swings, stripper poles, and a “sin room.” The resort also has nightly parties with themes such as “burlesque night” and “mysterious masquerade.” One thing you won’t have to worry about? What to wear!

3. The Bedside Reading: Night Theater District

Room at the Night Hotel New York

The Night Theater District may be just a few blocks from Times Square, but couples can still get plenty of shuteye — or at least private bedroom time, wink wink — thanks to heavy blackout drapes that are in keeping with the hotel’s “night” theme. Other sexy amenities include under-lit beds topped with luxe Frette linens, and a sleek black-and-white color scheme. But the naughtiest feature is hidden in the nightstand: Opening the drawer, guests with find Kama Sutra books for some inspirational bedtime reading.

4. The Pleasure Menu: The Drake Hotel, Toronto

Room at the Drake Hotel

Complete with a popular club-meets-music-venue, The Drake Hotel attracts a young, hip crowd. Rooms may be small, but they’re sleek and stylish, with glassed-in showers that look out at the bedrooms and cool artwork on the exposed-brick walls. Mood-inducing pleasure menus also come standard; guests can “order in” their pick of flavored condoms, sex toys, and, er, props. Oh, and you can also actually order food such as chocolate truffles and oysters — both of which being known aphrodisiacs.

5. The Naughty or Nice Package: Z Hotel, New York City

Room at the Z NYC Hotel

The Z is a hip boutique in Long Island City, Queens, and its reasonable rates alone will get guests in the mood for some hanky panky. But the Z doesn’t stop there. The hotel offers “naughty” and “nice” packages. While both offerings include a one-night’s stay, “nice” packages feature champagne and roses, in-room massages, and breakfast in bed. An intimacy kit (with edible underwear, handcuffs, a tickle feather, and blindfolds), a book of erotic games, and chocolate strawberries and champagne come with the “naughty” package. We have a feeling which you’re going to choose…

6. The (Super) Exposed Bathroom: The Standard High Line, New York City

Bathroom at the Standard High Line

The Standard is sexy to begin with: This Meatpacking hot spot features a popular gourmet restaurant, an outdoor biergarten that is bustling come spring, and an exclusive rooftop nightclub. But the hotel shows it’s naughty side in it’s massive, immaculate rooms. With a sleek design, rooms feature plush bedding, comfy robes, minibars stocked with gourmet snacks and top-shelf liquor, and — the most flasher-friendly feature — floor-to-ceiling windows (even in some of the bathrooms) that look out over the Hudson River and surrounding neighborhood. These windows are notorious for showcasing some nudie activities, startling many locals and tourists ambling along the High Line below.

7. The Love Room: Library Hotel, New York City

Love room at the Library Hotel

A homey, literary-themed boutique — located down the block from the city’s famous Public Library — the Library Hotel is a romantic pick. And it offers a solid value, too, with freebies like breakfast, Wi-Fi, and afternoon wine and cheese. The afternoon treats are the perfect way to cap off a day of sight-seeing and head back to your room, which is particularly enticing if you’re staying in the Love Room. This room is the only one with a terrace, which overlooks Madison Avenue, and the erotica book collection, which decorates the space, was curated by Dr. Ruth.

8. The Topless Party Haven: Temptation Cancun Resort

Pool area at Temptation Cancun Resort

This 21-plus resort in Cancun’s Hotel Zone is the life of the party — and tops are very optional. It recently underwent a major renovation that brings a sexy elegance to the hotel, but it still retains its party-hard mentality. There are dozens of provocative events to bring together couples and singles alike, from Temptation Idol karaoke to risqué shows at night.

9. The Champagne Glass-Shaped Hot Tub Experience: Cove Haven Resort

The Champagne Tower Suite at Cove Haven Resort

Back in the day, the Poconos were all the rage when it came to steamy getaways. The couples-only Cove Haven resort nods to these gaudier days with heart-shaped whirlpool tubs, mirrors on the ceilings to see all the best angles, and romance-themed fantasy decor but the “pièce de résistance” is the room with a Champagne glass-shaped whirlpool.

10. The Upscale Clothing-Optional Pick: Hidden Beach Resort, Riviera Maya

Bed at Hidden Beach Resort

The luxurious Hidden Beach Resort by Karisma is an adults-only, clothing-optional resort located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. This all-inclusive property is set along an attractive stretch of beach, though it’s too rocky for real swimming. Instead, guests can hang out at the large pool, which has a swim-up bar and hosts communal activities such as volleyball. The 42 elegant rooms here are all suite-style, outfitted with two-person hot tubs, ocean-view outdoor spaces, and free minibars. Ground-floor units offer swim-out access. There’s only one restaurant, minimal nightlife, and no spa, but guests can use all facilities at the next-door El Dorado Seaside Suites, though clothing is required. Visitors tend to be in the 50-and-over crowd, and the atmosphere is relaxed.

11. The Couples-Only Option: Desire Riviera Maya Resort

Beach at the Desire Riviera Maya Resort

While there are other couples-only clothing-optional resorts on this list (Desire Riviera Maya Pearl Resort and Cove Haven Resort), we have a soft spot for Desire Rivera Maya Resort, an all-inclusive that attracts a mix of older married couples, young nudists, and swingers. This swish property has an explicit sexual atmosphere, as public sex is allowed in the whirlpool area and the Sin Room — a space equipped with round beds and straps for those who want to take part in activities with their partners and other guests. Sexy theme nights are also popular nighttime experiences. Non-sexual on-site amenities include a lovely ocean-view pool and hot tub, small spa with a variety of treatments, and four restaurants serving Japanese, Mediterranean, and international buffet-style fare.

12. The “Prude” and “Nude” Retreat: Hedonism II, Jamaica

Beach at Hedonism II

Designed for adventurous couples who want to add a bit of spice to their vacation, the all-inclusive Hedonism II is a popular nudist resort tucked into a quiet, private section of Negril’s Seven Mile Beach. With a wide variety of activities and entertainment, this adults-only resort encourages guests to explore their wild side and indulge themselves. There are both “prude” and “nude” sections of the resort to accommodate different comfort levels, and property highlights include the nude beach, waterslide, and a variety of pools and whirlpools on both sides. Guests who want to explore the area are close to a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops in downtown Negril.

13. The Nude Beach Spot: Couples Sans Souci, Jamaica

Beach at Couples Sans Souci

The 148-room Couples Sans Souci is a beachfront all-inclusive resort occupying 35 acres just outside of Ocho Rios on Jamaica’s central northern coast. The lush grounds house waterfalls, grottos, beaches, lakes, and jungles, making for a gorgeous tropical setting. In addition to a great spa, there are four pools and two beaches — the au naturel beach is larger and nude-only from morning until evening. It has an adjacent pool — something the main beach doesn’t — which makes it pretty alluring. Rooms have colonial-inspired nautical style, furnished balconies or terraces, and coffeemakers, plus hot tubs in suites.

It hits all of the requisite apres-ski offerings: an ornate reading room with heavy leather chairs, an outdoor lounge deck with a whirlpool and fire pits, and a stylish bar manned by knowledgeable mixologists. Even though the on-site restaurant Wild Sage has delicious food, guests are still only steps away from Jackson’s restaurants, shops, and bars.
