Beautiful beaches, crystal-clear water, and a laid-back pace of life all make the Bahamas one of the most amazing destinations in the Caribbean. With around 30 inhabited islands to choose from, though, knowing which Bahamas island is right for you can be tricky. You see, stunning tropical scenery and picture-perfect beaches aside, each has its own special vibe — from Harbour Island’s Pink Sand Beach to laid-back Cat Island and the family-friendly Atlantis Resorts on Paradise Island. Luckily, we’ve spent a lot of time in the Bahamas, and have the perfect island escape for any kind of traveler.

New Providence Island (Nassau) Is Great for Travelers Who Want to Be Near the Action

While downtown Nassau (on New Providence Island) isn’t really the Caribbean escape most travelers have in mind, it is the capital of the Bahamas. From souvenir markets like the Straw Market to Fort Fincastle and the Queens Steps, things to do in Nassau are abundant enough for a day entertainment. It’s also home to local bars and nightclubs. However, if you’re staying on New Providence Island, you’d do well do sample its more luxurious side. That’s best expressed at Baha Mar, an exclusive development along the island’s central north coast. Here, some of the world’s most famous luxury resort brands sit together in a beautiful gated community that overlooks amazing Cable Beach. Baha Mar resorts also include excellent boutiques and shops, plus the chance to gamble like a high-roller at the largest casino in the Caribbean. Visiting New Providence Island is also one of the easiest escapes in the Bahamas, as it’s home to the largest airport in the country.

Your Luxury Hotel Pick on New Providence Island and Nassau: Grand Hyatt Baha Mar

The Elixir Pool at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar

Sitting right on the crystal-clear waters of Cable Beach, the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar isn’t small by any means, but the sheer number of features here give any resort on nearby Paradise Island a run for its money. The Grand Hyatt has six attractive pools, the Caribbean’s largest casino, impressive spa and fitness facilities, and an excellent golf course. Dining options range from haute Chinese cuisine and a seafood restaurant to Mexican food trucks. It’s a great escape for families and couples alike, and rooms are chic and spacious.

Paradise Island is Perfect For Families With Kids

The vast majority of travelers who think of the Bahamas are thinking of Paradise Island. This is the Bahamas at its most resort-heavy and bustling — and it’s also home to the world famous Atlantis Resorts. Knowing exactly where to stay on Paradise Island can be tricky — each of the Atlantis Resorts has their own personality, after all (you can check out our breakdown of them here). There are also non-Atlantis properties found on the island, most of which provide access to at least some of the Atlantis amenities. Those include everything from water parks to nightclubs, and all hotels offer numerous offshore activities. Because the resorts here pack in amenities for guests of all ages, Paradise Island is easily the most family-friendly spot in the Bahamas. Just keep in mind that this is the most popular destination in the Bahamas and can be busy.

Your Upscale Hotel Pick on Paradise Island: The Cove at Atlantis

Exterior at The Cove at Atlantis

While The Cove is home to the only adult pool at The Atlantis properties, it’s still incredibly family-friendly. It’s also worth a stay because it’s the most modern and attractive of the Atlantis resorts, while still offering access to the dizzying number of family-friendly features on offer (like the water park). The Cove shares a separate beach and large family pool with neighboring Reef Tower, making it a great spot for travelers of all kinds.

The Exumas Are Great for Lovers of Picture-Perfect Beaches

There’s a good chance you’ve heard of the Exumas. In fact, the islands that make up this part of the Bahamas are some of the most famous and picture-perfect you’re likely to find. Yes, Pig Beach is part of the Exumas (though whether you should visit is subject to some serious ethical concerns). But swimming pigs aside, the Exumas are fringed with stunningly white sand that almost glows, making this a beach-goers delight. The islands of the Exumas also tend to stay less crowded that other Bahamas islands, though you’ll be paying a pretty here. Even casual mid-range properties can be pricey — but that’s to be expected given how close to paradise you’ll feel.

Your All-Inclusive Hotel Pick in The Exumas: Fowl Cay Resort

Pool at the Fowl Cay Resort

Crowded beaches are unheard of on this private island resort, where a maximum of 28 guests at a time have free range of 50 acres and three beaches. Personal boats for daily excursions, on-call service, spacious villas with fully stocked kitchens and wet bars, and a host of all-inclusive activities make Fowl Cay a standout gem in the Exumas.

Eleuthera Is Ideal for Island Vibes and Escaping It All

If you want to avoid the crowds, Eleuthera is ideal — there are less than 15,000 residents on the island, and hotels here tend to be smaller boutique properties like the chic French Leave. While it’s tiny, that doesn’t mean that Eleuthera is lacking for things to do. The historic capital city — Governour’s Harbour — makes for a charming day trip or night visit, with its colorful colonial architecture and vacation vibe. You can dine at 1648 for local fare like grouper, jerk chicken wraps, and conch, or popular spots like Front Porch. You’ll likely want to visit Governor’s Harbour on Friday, when the Anchor Bay Fish Fry becomes the hot spot for locals and visitors to feast on the catch of the day, sip tropical cocktails, and enjoy music and dancing. If you’re after beaches, it’s hard to top those found here — in fact, Eleuthera’s pink sand beaches are almost as famous as those found on nearby Harbour Island.

Your Eleuthera Luxury Hotel Pick: The Cove Eleuthera

The Pool at The Cove Eleuthera

This 40-acre boutique resort on Eleuthera has been a hot spot for privacy-seeking celebs since it opened in 2013. One look and you’ll understand why. The Cove features a jaw-dropping infinity pool and cliffside bar, all tucked between two pretty private beaches. Chic, airy rooms have white decor, and enormous villas with private plunge pools and state-of-the-art kitchens are on offer.

Long Island Is Great for Adventurous Travelers

While the Exumas and Eleuthera are great for lazing away the day, the Bahamas isn’t all about low-energy getaways. Not far from the Exumas is Long Island, a great spot for fishing, diving, snorkeling, and eco tours. In fact, shark diving is a big deal here, and a great option for true adventure seekers. The fearless can dive into Dean’s Blue Hole, one of the world’s deepest blue holes, while on land the Lucayan Indian Cave is great for exploring. You can head to a different beach every day and find virtually nobody, making this a great destination for adventurers who like their share of peace and quiet as well. There are also small restaurants up and down the island that will satisfy your craving for great island fare — Max’s Conch Bar and Tiny’s Hurricane Hole are always popular.

Your Long Island Hotel Pick: Stella Maris Resort Club

East Beach at the Stella Maris Resort Club

Stella Maris Resort Club is precisely the kind of property that fits right in on Long Island. The landscape is natural and the vibe is entirely low-key. With a variety of hotel rooms, cottages, and villas with up to four bedrooms, the resort has lodging options to fit most parties and budgets. There are three pools at the hotel, but keep in mind that swimming here isn’t an option as the beach is quite rough. If you’re after a swimmable beach, check out Long Island’s Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort instead.

Cat Island Is the Most Secluded Island in the Bahamas

With only 1,500 residents spread out over 150 square miles, you’d be hard-pressed to find a less densely populated Bahamian island. What’s that mean for travelers? An incredible chance to truly get away from it all. You won’t find any Paradise Island-style resorts here — in fact, most of the properties feel like a bed-and-breakfast across Cat Island. You also won’t find a wide array of places to eat or drink, like you would on Harbour Island. Even so, it’s easy enough to organize diving, snorkeling, and fishing expeditions — as well as daily island-hopping adventures — from Cat Island. However, we’d suggest packing a few books and simply curling up in a hammock for a week to really soak up the unplugged vibe of this special place. If you’re after a full breakdown of Cat Island, check out our guide here.

Cat Island Hotel Pick: Pigeon Cay Beach Club

Beach Bar at the Pigeon Cay Beach Club

Pigeon Cay Beach Club is a barefoot-style property that draws couples, solo travelers, and families alike. The powdery white sand on the nearby beach stays blissfully uncrowded, and the resort’s seven rustic bungalows make you feel like you’ve escaped it all. Just don’t expect TV or internet. Amenities like free bikes, kayaks, and snorkel gear make unwinding a treat.

Harbour Island Is Famous for Pink Sand Beaches

While Eleuthera has its share of pink sand beaches, the real star of the Bahamas’ show is Harbour Island. Here, the stunning coral-infused sands make for a dramatic backdrop that feels otherworldly. Part of the island’s appeal is just how remote it feels — getting here generally requires flying to North Eleuthera Airport, then a cab ride, then a boat ride, and then another cab ride to your hotel. But that has made this one of the more exclusive hideaways of the Bahamas — think of Harbour Island as the glitzed-up counterpoint to laid-back Cat Island. The foodie scene is big here, and you’ll want to make reservations at your favorite spots well in advance. What’s the best way to get around Harbour Island? Rent a golf cart — it’s only three miles long, after all.

Harbour Island Hotel Pick: Coral Sands Hotel

Pool at the Pools at the Coral Sands Hotel

Coral Sands Hotel sits right on one of the Caribbean’s most gorgeous beaches and has a beach-chic vibe that’s hard to beat.  The beachfront Bahamian cottages are easily worth the splurge, though all rooms feature perks like memory foam beds and huge bathrooms. It’s all about relaxing at Coral Sands, from the beautiful infinity pool and beach to cocktails at the laid-back beach bar or even yoga classes.

Bimini Is Great for a Quick Long-Weekend Trip

Think you need to deal with multiple planes, taxis, and boat rides to reach the pretty beaches of The Bahamas? Think again. Bimini — one of the smallest sets of islands in the Bahamas — is only a 30-minute flight from Miami. That makes it perfect for a long-weekend recharge. We like Bimini because it’s developed just-enough. You can find plenty of restaurants and bars to keep yourself happy, and there are numerous beautiful beaches to choose from. It also has all kinds of options for travelers’ tastes. You can opt for frozen cocktails and beach clubs with buzzing vibes (at the Resorts World Bimini) or kick back in your own rental villa and be independent. In any case, if you need a quick dose of sun to get through the winter, Bimini is your spot. For a more detailed breakdown of Bimini, check out guide here.

Your Upscale Hotel Pick in Bimini: Hilton Bimini

The Lazy River Pool at the Hilton At Resorts World Bimini

Opened in 2015, the Bimini Hilton is one of the most popular spots on the island and has loads of on-site amenities. The hotel is part of the Resorts World Bimini condo complex, and many of the amenities are shared. Expect access to multiple pools and eateries, a marina, spa, and casino. The 305 rooms are gorgeous and contemporary — many have sea views or swim-out access to the Lazy River Pool.

9 Beautiful Caribbean Beaches (And Where to Stay Nearby!) https://www.oyster.com/articles/best-beaches-in-the-caribbean/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/best-beaches-in-the-caribbean/#respond Mon, 13 May 2024 17:51:42 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/articles/best-beaches-in-the-caribbean/

The Caribbean beckons with its promise of soft sand, turquoise waters, and endless sunshine. But with so many islands and beaches to choose from, where do you begin? Worry not, beach bums! We’ve narrowed down the list to 9 of the most stunning Caribbean beaches.

Some of the links featured in this story are affiliate links, and Oyster may collect a commission (at no cost to you) if you shop through them.

Seven Mile Beach, Jamaica

As the name suggests, this beach has seven miles of stunning shoreline bordering Negril. Quiet and removed from the busier beaches of Jamaica, you can fill your days just by relaxing in tranquility or by renting a watercraft for some fun in the water. The nearby town of  Negril is home to the famous Negril Cliffs, which you may recognize from the James Bond “Thunderball” movie, among others. Unlike other Caribbean beaches, the waters at Seven Mile Beach are generally calm, creating a better experience for beginner swimmers and others who prefer calmer waters to rougher surf.

There are several hotel options along or near Seven Mile Beach. Sunset at the Palms is your best option for adult-only all-inclusive. For families, Beaches Negril has a kids club, a water park, and even features Sesame Street characters. Budget travelers will love the Westender Inn, which have rooms for as low as $69 per night.

Seven Mile Beach sits near Negril, which offers a range of restaurants, bars, and shops, perfect for exploring after a day at the beach.

Recommended Hotel: Sunset at the Palms Resort

Pigeon Point Beach, Tobago

Pigeon Point Beach is one of Tobago’s most popular beaches, and for good reason. While resorts are plentiful on Tobago, it is still less developed than other Caribbean islands, so the feeling is a bit more rustic than other islands. You’ll find plenty to do other than enjoy the sun and water like trying your hand at stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, or snorkeling. You won’t be far from Buccoo Reef, which offers excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities. And it’s also an embarking point for boat tours out to Nylon Pool, a unique sand bar in the middle of the ocean.

There are several hotel options around Pigeon Point Beach. About a mile away, Coco Reef Resort & Spa is the perfect budget option for anyone looking for cheaper accommodations. Also about a mile away is the Tropikist Beach Hotel & Resort, which is perfect for families visiting the area. It features a kids club, multiple pools, and beachfront rooms. Further away, but a top choice for luxury travelers, is Magdalena Grand Beach Resort, which boasts a championship golf course, spa, and fitness center and sits directly on a beach with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.

Pigeon Point, the small village located on the beach, offers a variety of restaurants and shops that cater to the tourists visiting the beach.

Recommended Hotel: Magdalena Grand Beach

Playa Flamenco, Puerto Rico

The serene waters of Playa Flamenco are ideal for snorkeling and swimming, as well as for couples and families. Access to the beach is by ferry from the Ceiba Ferry Terminal.  The beach has lifeguards, showers, changing rooms, bathrooms, and plenty of food available for purchase, making it an ideal spot for a day at the beach. The beach is on the small island of Culebra, home to less than 2,000 residents. Be sure to check out The Tank, a reminder of the US Navy’s occupancy of Culebra.

You won’t find large hotels or resorts on Culebra; however, several boutique hotels and vacation rentals are available. The ferry is just under an hour, so staying on mainland Puerto Rico may be your best bet if you are looking for a larger resort.

Recommended Hotel: El Conquistador Resort

Grand Anse Beach, Grenada

Located on the southwestern coast of Grenada, this two-mile-long stretch of sand provides your quintessential Caribbean beach experience. Crystal blue waters and soft white sand provide the backdrop for a variety of activitie, including snorkeling, water skiing, parasailing, and kayaking. For a real adventure, book a dive to Bianca-C, a shipwreck known as the “Shipwreck of the Caribbean.”

Recommended Hotel: Radisson Grenada Beach Resort

Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos

Part of Princess Alexandra National Park, Grace Bay has insanely soft white sand, crystal clear turquoise waters, and virtually no seaweed or pollution, making this an ideal beach for relaxing, swimming, and picturesque photos. It’s a perfect spot for snorkeling, and the nearby downtown area is great for getting a bit to eat or for doing some shopping. The region surrounding Grace Bay has smaller beach communities, including The Bight on the western end, offering a mix of resorts, villas, and vacation rentals, as well as restaurants and bars. On the eastern end, you’ll find Provo West, a more secluded and upscale area with high-end resorts.

Accommodations are abundant near Grace Bay. Some of our favorites include The Palms Turks and Caicos, which features villas, suites and rooms perfect for families, the boutique Windsong on the Reef, and the luxurious Wymara Resort & Villas.

Recommended Hotel: Windsong on the Reef

Half Moon Bay, Antigua

The beautiful Half Moon Bay in Antigua seen from above.

A remote oasis, Half Moon Bay is one of Antigua’s finest, most tranquil beaches. While Antigua has its share of resorts, this mile-long crescent-shaped beach is secluded and quiet. Try your hand at kitesurfing, or just enjoy a swim in the serene waters. There is limited development on the beach, although a few resorts nearby offer dining and shopping; however, you’ll have to be a guest to utilize their services.

You’ll find English Harbour a short drive away, a historic area known for its charming Nelson’s Dockyard National Park. This park features restored 18th-century Georgian buildings, a museum dedicated to Admiral Nelson, and a vibrant yachting scene. Another short drive away is Falmouth Harbour, which features several restaurants, bars, and shops catering to tourists.

Budget accommodations near Half Moon Bay are hard to find. Galaxy Paradise Villas is about fifteen minutes away, which is more affordable than the luxury resorts closer to the beach. Escape at Nonsuch Bay offers a luxury beachfront stay if you’re willing to spend. For ultra-luxury, try Jumby Bay Island, an Oetker Collection Hotel, which is not directly on Half Moon Bay itself but is located on a private island accessible by boat, just off the coast near Half Moon Bay.

Recommended Hotel: Escape at Nonsuch Bay

Shoal Bay Anguilla

Shoal Bay East

Shoal Bay Anguilla is known for its calm, clear turquoise waters and pink-hued white sand. It is split into two distinct sections: Upper Shoal Bay, which is secluded and tranquil, and Lower Shoal Bay, a more livelier area with restaurants, bars, and watersports rentals.

Shoal Bay Village supplies visitors to the beach with various restaurants, bars, and shops. If you want a more vibrant night scene, the capital of Anguilla, The Village, is a fifteen-minute car ride away. Other than that, Shoal Bay Village provides everything you’ll need during your stay, and most resorts and hotels in the area are within walking distance of the beach.

Hotels and resorts are plentiful in the area. If you’re looking for a luxurious stay with infinity pools and spa while visiting Shoal Bay, look no further than Zemi Beach Resort. A nice mid-range option is Shoal Bay Beach Hotel, which offers beachfront accommodations at an affordable price. Budget-minded travelers will love Serenity Cottages, which start at just $250 per night.

Recommended Hotel: Zemi Beach Resort

Magens Bay, St. Thomas

Located on the north shore of St. Thomas, Magen’s Bay boasts a nearly one-mile stretch of pristine white sand and clear turquoise waters and is one of St. Thomas’ most popular beaches. Part of a public park, there are restrooms, changing rooms, and a snack bar making a day at the beach a breeze. Charlotte Amalie is a short drive away, offering several restaurants, bars, shopping and historic sites.

Magens Bay Resort is located directly across the street from Magen’s Bay Beach, making it a desirable spot for anyone hoping to frequent the beach. Marriott’s Frenchman’s Cove is on Frenchman’s Bay, next to Magen’s Bay, giving guests easy access to the beach. Ten minutes away, you’ll find Flamboyan on the Bay Resort and Villas, which is a good option for anyone on a budget.

Recommended Hotel: Flamboyan on the Bay Resort & Villas

Bathsheba Beach, Barbados

Rock formation on the beach of Bathsheba, East coast of island Barbados, paradise beach and coast of caribbean island
Andreas | Adobe Stock

Also known as the “Soup Bowl,” this unique beach with dramatic rock formations and strong waves rounds out our top Caribbean beach picks. The rock formations are huge pieces of coral broken off from reefs thousands of years ago, and create a stellar backdrop.

Surfers will love the consistently giant waves, making Bathsheba a hotspot for surfers.

The area surrounding Bathsheba is undeveloped, so amenities within the beach are limited. A short car ride away is Bathsheba village, with a few restaurants and guesthouses. A mile and a half away are the Andromeda Botanic Gardens, providing a peaceful escape from the crashing waves of the beach.

Because of it’s under development, accommodations are hard to come by within close proximity. There are a few small hotels and guesthouses within walking distance, like the ECO Lifestyle & Lodge, which provides guests with eco-friendly amenities, cascading saltwater baths, sauna and traditional, breezy rooms. You’ll have to go about fifteen miles away for a bigger resort like the Crane Resort.

Hotel Recommendation: ECO Lifestyle & Lodge

South of Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach is known as a hip surf haven. The town has around 12 miles of white sandy beaches and great waves. Renting a surfboard isn’t difficult, although aficionados will probably want to bring their own. You may also want to time your trip to coincide with one of the food festivals hosted throughout the year, including the New Smyrna Beach Food Festival (in April), the Cinco de Mayo celebration (in May), the Shrimp & Seafood Festival (in August), or Jazz Fest (in September). Year-round attractions include the artist studios at The Hub on Canal, exhibitions at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and area wildlife, which includes manatees and dolphins.

Approximately 20 minutes south of downtown Miami, Key Biscayne has had a development boom since the causeway connecting it to the mainland opened in the middle of the 20th century. Notable residents have included Brad Pitt, Cher, and Richard Nixon. While luxurious living can be found throughout Key Biscayne (golf courses and gourmet restaurants included), the destination also has numerous quaint attractions. The 170-year-old Cape Florida Lighthouse is a local monument and the Heritage Trail has mesmerizing water views and a prehistoric fossil reef. Meanwhile, the smooth water of Crandon Park Beach is a favorite among windsurfers. Almost all of Key Biscayne’s sand boxes offer relaxing alternatives to Miami’s party pits.

Where to Stay: The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne

While The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne exudes luxury, it also offers a charming escape on a private island minutes from Miami’s bustle. It features elegant rooms with balconies facing the turquoise ocean, while separate adult and family pools make it perfect for both couples looking for a romantic getaway or families looking for fun. The renowned Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center promises active fun, and world-class dining completes this picture-perfect beach retreat. Several on-site restaurants cater to various atmospheres and cuisines.

Captiva Island

Beach at South Seas Island Resort

Off the west coast of Florida, about a one-hour drive from Fort Myers, Captiva Island is small enough that you won’t need a car once you arrive. For families, South Seas Island Resort offers plenty to do on its 300 acres, including relaxing on private beaches, enjoying the scenic yacht harbor, playing a round at the nine-hole golf course, and taking a dip in the three outdoor pools with waterslides. Travelers who prefer a more custom vacation also have numerous options for accommodations and dining. The Keylime Bistro at Captiva Island Inn serves dishes like crab cake Benedict and, as expected, Key lime pie. The Bubble Room is packed with toys from the the 1930s and ‘40s and has a menu with Gulf shrimp (prepared numerous ways), sticky buns, and orange crunch cake. Captiva Beach has limited parking, but an enormous variety of shells for people who like to collect them.

Where to Stay: South Seas Island Resort

South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island embodies island charm with a touch of luxury. Spacious beach villas or cozy harborside cottages provide a home base for exploring the island. After a day of seashell hunting or kayaking, unwind by the pool or indulge in fresh local seafood at Harbourside Bar and Grill, which has scenic harbor views. Grab a burger at The Pointe poolside for a casual beachfront meal, or enjoy a sweet treat at Scoops & Slices.

Stuart

Locomotives used to stop in Stuart to haul away bushels of chrysanthemums and pineapples. While it’s no longer a farming community, Stuart still has small-town charm that can be found in its B&Bs, sidewalk cafes, and art galleries. There’s also picturesque waterfront scenery to be enjoyed here. Not only does this town of 19,000 residents have excellent Atlantic Ocean views, it’s also positioned along the St. Lucie and Indian rivers, making it the perfect place for leisurely waterfront walks. The boardwalk is dotted with boutiques, restaurants, and people to watch. Locals also pride themselves on the health of the ecosystem here, which makes it possible to see dolphins swimming through the clear blue waves just off the coast. Marine life fans can stop by the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center, which showcases turtles, stingrays, and numerous other types of local fish. Another piece of Stuart culture, the House of Refuge Museum was once a shelter for sailors and now houses exhibits about patents and inventions. As for sand, Jensen Beach, Bathtub Reef Beach, and Stuart Beach are all loved.

Where to Stay: Courtyard Stuart

Courtyard by Marriott blends comfort and convenience for a relaxing stay. Modern rooms with high-speed Wi-Fi and ergonomic workspaces cater to business travelers. At the same time, families appreciate amenities like a sparkling outdoor pool and a fire pit in the charming courtyard. On-site, The Bistro serves breakfast options (for a fee) and light fare throughout the day, perfect for grabbing a bite before exploring charming Historic Downtown Stuart, just a short drive away.

Siesta Key

Lido Beach in Siesta Key, Sarasota, Florida
Ruth P. Peterkin | Adobe Stock

Try not to confuse Siesta Key — the barrier island off Florida’s southwest coast — with the MTV reality show of the same name. Yes, the series is filmed in Florida, but Siesta Key has loads of family-friendly fun. Ocean Boulevard has boutiques and buskers playing Jimmy Buffet covers. The sand here has a high quartz content, making it powder soft, cool to the touch, and comfortable for sunbathing. The annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic sand-sculpting festival challenges artists from around the world to create a masterpiece in 24 hours. Other local traditions include a weekly drum circle that forms on Siesta Key Beach every Sunday an hour before sunset. If you wish to leave dry land, book a deep-sea fishing tour or a sunset cruise.

Where to Stay: Hyatt Residence Club Sarasota, Siesta Key Beach

Nestled directly on the beach, Hyatt Residence Club Sarasota, Siesta Key Beach offers condos, which are ideal for families. Each unit boasts a full kitchen and luxurious bathrooms, while the resort itself features a sparkling pool, pampering spa, and state-of-the-art fitness center.

Seaside

Aerial view of the coastline near the WaterColor Inn in Seaside, Florida
WaterColor Inn

A trip to Seaside is like stepping through a time machine. Founder Robert S. Davis inherited the land in 1978 and turned it into a community resembling an old beach town. Located in Florida’s northwestern Panhandle, Seaside is closer to Alabama and Georgia than Orlando, and its culture is modeled after genteel, small-town Southern life. Seaside’s buildings are a mix of Victorian, neoclassical, modern, and postmodern styles, and it’s precisely this combination that made it a great choice for a filming location for “The Truman Show.” Local attractions include Airstream Row, a food truck park where chefs work out of vintage trailers, and the Seaside Repertory Theatre, the only professional troupe on the Emerald Coast. Nearby Grayton Beach State Park is considered one of the best beaches in the country. Not only can visitors go swimming here, but camping, mountain biking, tubing, and scuba diving are also on offer.

Where to Stay: WaterColor Inn

Watercolor Inn is a luxurious boutique hotel on Florida’s Scenic Highway 30A. It features spacious rooms with balconies overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, multiple casual dining restaurants, and access to numerous pools.

Vero Beach

Beach at Costa d’Este Beach Resort/Oyster
Beach at Costa d’Este Beach Resort

Vero Beach packs in a good amount of culture and wildlife into 13 square miles. A local ordinance prevents buildings from being taller than four stories, helping the destination maintain its small-town vibe. Unlike other crowded stretches found in Florida, Vero’s white-sand beaches often have more birds than humans. Approximately one-fourth of the world’s sea turtles lay their eggs on Florida’s East Coast where Vero is located, making for regular turtle-hatching sightings. Several tours are organized around the local turtle population. The Florida Cracker Airboat rides are also popular, as guests can zip through St. Johns River on a boat powered by an airplane engine. The Vero Beach Museum of Art has an impressive permanent collection, including works made from glass, bronze, and chopsticks. The Vero Beach Opera Guild regularly stages performances in buildings around town, and movie buffs should schedule their trip for June during the Vero Beach Wine & Film Festival. Local food and shopping caters to upscale tastes (numerous millionaires vacation here), so be prepared to splurge.

Where to Stay: Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa

Tucked along Florida’s sunny coast, Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa provides luxurious accommodations to guests. Beachfront infinity pools and lounge chairs beckon for relaxation, while the on-site spa promises tranquility. Foodies will love The Wave Kitchen & Bar, serving fresh seafood and local ingredients with stunning ocean views.

Cocoa Beach

Beach at Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront
Beach at Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront

About an hour away from Orlando and less than a half-hour from the Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach can be a nice home base for seeing several attractions in central Florida. The town’s growth took off in the 1960s along with the expansion of America’s space program. Fans of the sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie” may remember the location, as it was often mentioned in the series. The actual stretch of sand known as Cocoa Beach is less crowded than many of Florida’s sunbathing spots, and free parking can be found if you know where to look. As the East Coast’s unofficial surf capital, Cocoa Beach takes boarding pretty seriously. The Cocoa Beach Surf Company has one of the largest surf stores in the world and the Florida Surf Museum is located in the local Ron Jon shop. Several festivals take place every year, including the Pro/Am, NKF Surf, and Beach ’n Boards. You can often watch the action from Cocoa Beach Pier, where you can also fish and fill up on oysters, ice cream, and umbrella drinks.

Where to Stay: Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront

Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront directly faces the Atlantic’s waves, providing stunning views. This modern hotel offers a vibrant scene, with an oceanfront tiki bar and beach volleyball courts adding to the Florida fun. After a day of sun and surf, guests can unwind by the pool or enjoy fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant.

Anna Maria Island

Pool at Sunrise Garden Resort
Pool at Sunrise Garden Resort

At only seven miles long, Anna Maria Island is the perfect destination for a cute beach town getaway. Unlike some of the other beach spots in Florida that are overrun with high-rise condos and large hotels, Anna Maria Island has a quaint, old-Florida charm. There are three main towns – Anna Maria, Holmes Beach, and Bradenton Beach – and all have a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. You won’t find any huge chain stores or restaurants here; instead, locally-owned shops, art galleries, and cafes are lining the streets. You can go kayaking or paddleboarding in the mangroves, take a dolphin-watching tour, or explore the island’s many nature trails. A free trolley runs up and down the island, so you can easily get around without a car. The island has dozens of restaurants serving everything from grouper sandwiches to mahi-mahi tacos. You can also find fresh seafood markets to buy your own catch and cook it back at your rental property.

Where to Stay: Sunrise Garden Resort

Sunrise Garden Resort offers a relaxing escape in the heart of Anna Maria Island. Think pastel-colored villas with balconies overlooking a sparkling pool, all surrounded by lush tropical foliage. It’s a short walk to the beach for sun-kissed days, and the vibe is friendly and low-key, perfect for soaking up the island’s charm. Guests can enjoy a heated pool and grill stations and can bring their furry family members: the hotel is pet-friendly!

Cancún vs. Cabo: Which Mexico Travel Destination Is Better for You? https://www.oyster.com/articles/cancun-vs-cabo-which-is-a-better-vacation-spot-for-you/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/cancun-vs-cabo-which-is-a-better-vacation-spot-for-you/#respond Mon, 08 Apr 2024 17:22:25 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/54442-cancun-vs-cabo-which-is-a-better-vacation-spot-for-you/

Mexico is as popular a travel destination as ever, with 38.3 million people visiting in 2023. While beach towns like Sayulita, Tulum, and Playa Espiritu are coming into their own, Cancún and Los Cabos are still major tourist draws. The two destinations emerged in the ’60s and ’70s, respectively, when the Mexican government discovered their potential in a search for tourism development. Today, both offer ample hotels, beaches, activities, spas, and nightlife options — yet they each have their own unique strengths. So which one is right for you? To compare, we matched the two destinations in the following categories: getting there and around, beaches, activities, dining, nightlife, accommodations, cost and safety. Check them out and make your pick.

Traveling to Cancún and Los Cabos

Los Cabos: Los Cabos (nicknamed Lands End) is on the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula on the western coast of Mexico, making it easier to get to for those living on the west coast. The name, which means “Two Capes,” combines the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, about 35 minutes apart by car — with several beaches in between. There are taxis and a local bus system, but many choose to explore the region with a car. Don’t be alarmed if the car rental company explains where the spare tire and tools are — roads in certain parts of Baja can be rough, but they are safe for tourists, with plenty of police presence and several security checkpoints.

Cancún: Cancún, for its part, is located on the eastern part of Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula, which faces the Caribbean Sea, so its geographical position makes it an easy jaunt for those who live in the Midwest and East Coast. The actual city of Cancún — 12.5 miles from the center of the Hotel Zone — is part of the ancient Mayan civilization and is considered the gateway to El Mundo Maya (the Mayan World), so there are plenty of day-trip options that can be arranged with tour groups. The Yucatan also has a local bus system for adventurous types, and — like Los Cabos — some choose to rent a car so they can have the freedom to explore.

Beaches in Los Cabos and Cancún

Cancún: Both locations will not disappoint in terms of beaches and views. Situated at Yucatan’s corner where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico, Cancún boasts warm, clear, turquoise water — the kind that people tend to fantasize about when planning a tropical vacation. The Hotel Zone (with over 100 hotels, it’s where most people stay) is a lengthy 14-mile strip of fine white sand shaped like a number 7, allowing for water sports, sunbathing, swimming, and long walks along the shore.

Los Cabos: While Cancún is flat, Los Cabos is surprisingly mountainous with a rugged desert landscape and rock formations, especially photogenic El Arco, visible from many hotels near Cabo San Lucas. Though Cancún has turquoise water, no one will balk at the deep blue tone of the sparkling Sea of Cortez, especially from a higher altitude where mountainous roads allow for some gorgeous views. Cabo is also sunnier and drier (and less humid) than Cancún, with less than 10 inches of rain per year (much of it in September and early October). There are not as many swimming beaches in Cabo due to powerful undertows that make them too dangerous, but locals know plenty of safe spots for water sports, and even some that are ideal for surfing. For safe swimming conditions, check out our list of the best swimmable beaches in Cabo.

Activities in Cancún and Los Cabos

Like with any beach destination, typical resort activities can be expected at both destinations in the way of championship golf resorts, spa treatments, water sports, and tourist excursions — but what sets these two locations apart from each other?

Los Cabos: Los Cabos has the benefit of land: the mountains of Sierra de la Laguna, Cabo Pulmo National Park, Cañon de la Zorra (Fox Canyon), ATV trails through the desert, hiking Mount Solmar, and exploring the charming and historic town center of San Jose del Cabo (far less touristy than Cabo San Lucas). The area also has one of the largest marlin fishing tournament in the world, and in winter, blue whales bear their calves in the warm waters of the Gulf of California after completing their migration from Alaska (keep the camera close and listen for the ringing of the bell during whale sightings). The area also offers unique dive sites like Sand Falls, an underwater waterfall of cascades leading to a 1,200-foot canyon below. Snorkelers for their part can drive up to Baja’s capital, La Paz, and swim with whale sharks — gentle giants that can get as big as 40 feet. For more itinerary inspiration, check out our list of the coolest things to do in Los Cabos.

Cancún: Meanwhile Cancún has better shopping with upscale malls like La Isla and Luxury Avenue. Popular day-trips include Isla Mujeres, located eight miles off the coast, Cozumel, and Chichen Itza, once the capital city of the Mayan civilization — two hours west of Cancún. There’s also a small set of Mayan buildings right downtown in Cancún. Two hours south of Cancún is the trendy town of Tulum, where centuries-old temples are built right along the shore. The Caribbean Sea offers coral reefs for snorkeling and scuba diving, including the island of Cozumel, and cenotes, a big sinkhole filled with freshwater and fish. Kids can play with spider monkeys at The Jungle Place sanctuary. For more itinerary inspiration, check out our list of the best Cancún excursions as well as the most unexpected day trips from Cancún.

Food in Cancún and Los Cabos

Los Cabos: Mainstream travelers can find plenty of touristy spots in downtown Cabo San Lucas, while those seeking authenticity should head for San Jose del Cabo. Either way, with a car, it leaves a lot more freedom to explore. A few examples worth the drive include Flora’s Field Kitchen — part of a gorgeous 10-acre organic farm in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains (and definitely worth the rough roads to get here). Also within driving distance is Los Tamarindos, a working, organic farm that grows lemongrass, artichokes, and other fruits and veggies (cooking classes are available).

Other notable restaurants include Pitahayas Restaurant, part of Hacienda Vacation Club, Seven Seas Seafood Grille at Cabo Surf Hotel, and Sunset MonaLisa, annually ranked as one of the most romantic restaurants in the world, popular for proposals and wedding ceremonies.

Cancún: Cancún, for its part, tends to offer more all-inclusive environments, and most resorts include breakfast and lunch buffets at least. Due to this, most local restaurants open for lunch around 2 p.m. and stay open until midnight. For those who like to venture out, several types of cuisine can be found in and around the Hotel Zone, but there are only a few oceanfront restaurants; instead, those who want views can dine at the waterfront restaurants facing Nichupte Lagoon for beautiful sunsets. As for downtown Cancún (a taxi ride away), there are a range of Mexican restaurants, as well as fresh seafood and international cuisine types.

Nightlife in Cancún and Los Cabos

Cancún: When most people think of Cancún, they picture yard beers, foam parties, and wet t-shirt contests — and rightly so since this has been a spring break destination for over 20 years. Perhaps this is place to avoid during March and April if crowds of partiers make you cringe. The partying does tame down after April, but Cancún will always be associated with nightlife and the hot spots get steady crowds all year long — pulling in ages from 18 (legal drinking age in Mexico) to mid-50s and up.

Nightclubs tend to sell open-bar bracelets, which allows everyone to pay one price to enter the club and drink all night, while bottle service, for an extra fee, is encouraged. Cancún also offers bar hopping tours, which bring visitors to several nightclubs in one night. Cabo San Lucas is also known for a spring break crowd and the tourist hub suffers no shortage of people walking around with beer, late-night dance clubs, biker bars, and rock music venues. Check out our list of the best nightclubs and bars in Cancún, which include notable venues like Coco Bongo, Senor Frogs, Mandala, and even some on-property spots.

Los Cabos: Those looking to escape the rowdiness can head to peaceful San Jose del Cabo, which offers the look and vibe of an authentic Mexican town; picture cobblestone streets and beautiful colonial architecture in the main square. Tucked on narrow streets are cozy wineries, rooftop bars, and Spanish guitarists playing acoustic shows. Another romantic spot is the champagne lounge set on a cliff: El Farallón at The Resort at Pedregal.

Accommodations in Los Cabos and Cancún

Cabos and Cancún both specialize in all-inclusive options, but the accommodations tend to be a bit different. In Cancún,  you’ll find large, all-inclusive resorts across a wide range of price points, with most right on the beach. Cabos specializes in luxury and boutique hotels on the beach.

Cancún: In Cancún, you’ll find all-inclusive resorts to suit whatever type of vacation you want. For the partiers, there is Grand Oasis, Hard Rock Hotel, and Beach Palace – all located within the Hotel Zone, close to bars and restaurants, yet all with their party scenes on-site. Families will love The Ritz-Carlton, the Hyatt Ziva, and the Moon Palace– all with many amenities for kids. If you are just looking for a relaxing beach vacation, try Le Blanc Spa Resort, Beloved Playa Mujeres, or Secrets the Vine.

Los Cabos: Cabos is your spot for a more luxurious stay. The One&Only Pamilla sits on one of Cabos’ only swimmable beaches and features an aromatherapy turn-down menu and daily snacks delivered to your room. The Waldorf Astoria Los Caobs Pedregal is accessible only through a private tunnel and features amenities like bungalows that open up directly to the ocean and oceanside dining. Las Ventanas al Paraiso, A Rosewood Resort has personal butlers with stunning infinity pools, and when you arrive, you get a free head and neck massage to ease those travel tensions.

Safety in Los Cabos and Cancún

Cancún: Recent news headlines might have you asking the question: Is Cancún safe? According to the U.S. State Department, Cancún (and Quintana Roo as a whole) has a Level 2 warning, which means travelers should exercise increased caution when visiting. The warning states that “While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations and turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens.” Other countries with a Level 2 warning include Italy and Germany. As with many other destinations, it’s wise to stick to popular areas and take property safety precautions. For more peace of mind, check out our story on how to stay safe while traveling in Mexico.

Los Cabos: According to the U.S. State Department website, there are currently no restrictions on travel for U.S. government employees in Baja California Sur, which includes tourist areas in Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, and La Paz. Much like Cancún, Cabo has a Level 2 warning, so travelers should exercise caution. Tip: Stick to toll roads if you absolutely must drive and only do so during daylight hours. For a broader look at the region, check out our story on travel safety in Mexico.

Cost of Cancún Vs. Los Cabos

Let’s face it: taking a vacation can be expensive. The good news? Most places you will book for a trip to Cancún and Los Cabos will be all-inclusive, so you won’t need too much extra money on hand once you book your hotel and flight. So, is there a difference between the two when it comes to those two major bookings?

Cancún: You are typically going to be able to find better deals when booking a trip to Cancún. You’ll find a wider range of affordable all-inclusive resorts. Just make sure you do your research before booking; you don’t want to find yourself in the midst of the hottest resort for college spring break when you are looking for some relaxation. Cancún has several nonstop flights from all over the US, and the lowest rates range from $225-$300 depending on where  you are flying from.

Los Cabos: Cabos, being the center of luxury, has less budget-friendly options to choose from than Cancún, so you’ll likely be spending more if you choose Cabos as your destination. That being said, you’ll get exactly what you’re looking for in Cabo: relaxation. Flights tend to be a bit more expensive, and nonstop flights to San Jose aren’t as abundant from all over the country as they are to Cancún. Flights are $355-400 depending on where you fly out of and when you fly.

One of Our Favorite Hotels in Cancún: Excellence Playa Mujeres

This luxury all-inclusive is set in the heart of a private resort community to the north of Cancún. Modern, luxurious rooms are huge and have big whirlpool tubs; all have balconies and some have ocean views. Certain categories have swim-up access or private plunge pools. All the features expected for this caliber of resort are here, including seven pools, nine restaurants, 11 bars, and a high-end spa.

One of Our Favorite Hotels in Cabo: Solmar Resort

As the oldest and most budget-friendly hotel in the Solmar Hotels & Resorts group, Solmar Resort All-Inclusive is a solid choice for travelers seeking affordable, beachfront lodging in Cabo San Lucas. The list of amenities is decent, including two pools, an alfresco restaurant with ocean views, a sushi bar, and beachfront spa cabanas.

The Ultimate Packing List for a Beach Getaway https://www.oyster.com/articles/beach-vacation-packing-list-packing-list-for-the-beach/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/beach-vacation-packing-list-packing-list-for-the-beach/#respond Mon, 04 Mar 2024 14:35:58 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/62800-beach-vacation-packing-list-packing-list-for-the-beach/

Whether driving to the warm Florida coast or jet-setting to the sandy Caribbean islands, we’ve created a packing list that should cover all your beach essentials. Of course, consider the destination’s weather, what activities you’ll be doing, and any other travel necessities (passport, power adapter, and phone chargers) when packing your luggage.

Tip: Right click image to save and print

Beach Essentials

A successful beach day starts with your setup. A sturdy towel that doesn’t gather too much sand is necessary for lounging and drying off. Opt for a beach chair if you don’t want to lay out on the ground, and don’t forget a cooler for some oceanside beverages and a beach umbrella to protect you from the sun. When you’re not playing in the waves or taking in the views, it’s a good idea to have a few entertainment options on hand—like an e-reader or your favorite podcast—to pass the time. At the end of the day, throw all of your items in a handy tote bag (this one from Lands’ End is extra large and customizable) or beach cart to haul them back to your car or hotel room.

Possibly the most important beach essential is a functional and fashionable bathing suit. This color block suit from Summersalt is a great option for one-piece lovers, while this option from Swimsuits for All offers a similar aesthetic and color scheme in a two-piece. Pair your suit with a cute cover-up, sunglasses, a floppy sun hat, a water bottle (hydration is a key beach accessory!), and some sandals for a beach ‘fit straight from your summer Pinterest board.

Clothing

Make sure you have the basics: shorts, casual shirts, sleepwear, and underwear. Once these essentials are ready to go, think about the itinerary of the trip. Are you planning a nicer dinner or a night on the town? You may want to pack a few dressier outfit options (like a versatile black dress or some slacks) and a nicer pair of sandals. Does it get colder at night at your destination? Bring a light sweater or cardigan and a couple pairs of pants. Plan on hopping on a bike to see the sights or hitting the gym? Throw some activewear, sneakers, and socks in your suitcase.

Toiletries

A toiletries bag for a beach vacation looks almost the same as one for any other trip, with a few notable exceptions:

Sunscreen: A critical part of a pre-beach skincare routine, make sure to pack some sunscreen for the face as well as a larger bottle for the rest of you.

Aloe Vera: If you forget to reapply sunscreen during the day, you’ll be grateful you thought to bring along some aloe vera to soothe the burn.

Lotion and Moisturizer: These are probably products on your standard packing list, but they are doubly important to bring to the beach to rehydrate your face and body after a day of sun and salt air.

First-Aid Kit: Another good idea for any packing list, but especially handy for the occasional boogie board accident or seashell scrape.

Period Products: Few things are more frustrating than getting to the beach and realizing you’ve forgotten to pack a box of tampons. Make sure to always have some on hand or spring for some period swimwear like this set from Knix.

Extras

Once your suitcase and beach bag are filled with the essentials, don’t forget to consider these extras to elevate your trip.

Floats and Water Gear: Boogie boards, surf boards, snorkel gear, floats, SUPs – don’t forget to pack your gear and any necessary accessories to float, paddle, and ride your way to a perfect day.

Sand Toys: If you’re bringing children to the beach (or you plan to flex your own architectural muscles), you’ll need the tools of the trade to build the best sand castle.

Camera: Capture amazing shots without risking your smartphone with this waterproof digital camera, capable of taking high-resolution images and video underwater.

Portable Speaker: For all those summer hits, definitely remember to throw a portable bluetooth speaker in your beach bag.

Water Shoes: If the idea of brushing up against some seaweed or sinking into the seabed makes you squeamish, water shoes are probably a good addition to your wardrobe.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta Cana is a very popular destination in the Dominican Republic, offering some of the prettiest white-sand beaches in the Caribbean, warm weather year-round, and notoriously friendly staff. The town is mostly made up of large mega-resorts where tourists hole up and spend their days lounging and drinking (this is especially easy to do at the numerous all-inclusive properties). Rates are reasonable across the board, so travelers can easily find a hotel that suits their budget.

  • Luxury: Zoetry Agua Punta Cana is a romantic, quiet, and all-inclusive property along a beautiful, uncrowded beach. The 96 spacious suites have butler service, outdoor spaces, and impressive bathrooms. Unlimited dining, top-shelf drinking, and many activities are part of the rate. Cancun has it all: beautiful beaches abutting turquoise waters, ample nightlife opportunities, great snorkeling, and easy access to Mayan ruins. Plus, given the downtown area, nearby attractions, and prevalent English, it’s easy to explore areas outside the resort grounds.

  • Luxury: Couples seeking a romantic stay will find the adults-only Excellence Playa Mujeres a good pick, thanks to its private resort community setting, luxe rooms with big whirlpool tubs, seven pools, multiple restaurants and bars, and high-end spa. Expect seven nights to cost around $4,988.

A combination of gorgeous mountainous terrain and pretty beaches makes St. Lucia an excellent pick for those who love hiking as much as lounging on the sand. Ample water activities, tasty Creole cuisine, and an underdeveloped feel add to this beautiful island’s appeal. All-inclusive resorts aren’t as numerous here as previously mentioned locales, especially not in the budget to mid-range class, but there are still options for various prices.

  • Luxury: Providing incredible views of the island’s famous Pitons, Jade Mountain Resort is a romantic adults-only (16 and over) property. Meeting new people and seeing fresh places unites every traveler during their journey. But for open-minded couples who like to swing, the opportunity to meet other like-minded adults on vacation can be a challenge, especially if you don’t know where to look. Well, we come bearing good news. From a nudist hotel in Florida to a clothing-optional resort in Cancun that permits sex in public areas, hotels around the world are bringing swingers together. Here, we compiled eight of our NSFW, swinger-friendly favorites.

1. La Mirage Swingers Complex, Gran Canaria, Spain

La Mirage Swingers Complex
Oyster

From the outside, La Mirage Swingers Complex is a standard value hotel in Gran Canaria. There are a nice outdoor pool, bar and restaurant, two hot tubs, and a mini market. But, take a closer look and you’ll spot the sex swing and mirrored ceiling in one of the two playrooms. At this adults-only, clothing-optional hotel, couples are also known to get intimate in public. Complimentary condoms are even handed out on the property. Naturalists can catch a cab to a nudist beach five minutes away while those looking for a good time can head to Fun4all Swingers Club, only about a 10-minute taxi ride. The property also draws nudist, monogamous couples with its pleasant pool, popular happy hour, and relaxed atmosphere.

2. Desire Riviera Maya Resort, Mexico

Desire Riviera Maya Resort
Oyster

Don’t let the relaxed beach photos fool you. Things heat up when the sun goes down at Desire Riviera Maya Resort, a popular spot with couples and swingers on a secluded beach in Cancun’s Riviera Maya. Sex is even permitted in certain common areas of the couples-only hotel, including the whirlpool area and the Sin Room, which has round beds and straps for those who want to take part in sexual games with other guests or their partners. Things are also known to get heated in the clothing-optional nightclub. Plus, the rooftop whirlpool tub, which fits up to 30 people, is open into the wee hours of the night. But swingers aren’t the only ones who have all the fun — monogamous couples looking to sunbathe au naturel also stay at this hotel, in addition to its slightly more subdued sister hotel, Desire Riviera Maya Pearl Resort.

3. Vera Playa Club Hotel, Andalucia, Spain

Vera Playa Club Hotel, Andalucia
Oyster

Advertised as the first naturalist resort in Spain, Vera Playa Club Hotel has an uninhibited vibe and direct access to a nude beach. While most areas of the property are clothing-optional, the pool is strictly nude throughout the day. However, as this is a family-friendly property with activities and animation for children, the atmosphere is less sexual and more relaxed. Nevertheless, swingers are present here and typically range from their 40s to 50s. The Templum, a swinger-friendly club located just outside the hotel, is an added draw for open-minded couples.

4. Hedonism II, Negril, Jamaica

Hedonism II
Oyster

Hedonism II lives up to its name, attracting couples (including numerous repeat guests) who are traveling in pursuit of pleasure. The property is situated in a secluded area of Negril‘s Seven Mile Beach, where facilities and guest rooms are divided between a “prude” and “nude” side. The prude beach, pool, and hot tub are clothing-optional, whereas the nude sections prohibit duds altogether. The nude pool is the liveliest (and most PDA-centric) part of the resort during the day, while at night, most sensual activities take place at the Romping Shop Playroom, where condoms are provided, and public sex is common. Themed nights, an on-site shop selling lingerie and toys, and group-friendly hot tubs up the sex appeal.

5. Temptation Cancun Resort, Mexico

Temptation Cancun Resort
Oyster

The adults-only, topless-optional Temptation Cancun Resort isn’t as naughty as Desire Riviera Maya Resort, but this all-inclusive hotel gets swinging with sexy entertainment ranging from foam parties and lingerie shows to themed nights with DJs such as “Angels and Devils.”  There are two pools — the Sexy Pool and Quiet Pool — and multiple hot tubs throughout, as well as a chic rooftop spot with a pool, bar, and music for Tower room guests. Remember that while the gift shop sells condoms (and outfits for theme nights), it closes on the early side. There are more couples than singles here, and they tend to be in the 35 to 45 age range.

6. Copacabana Hotel & Suites, Jaco, Costa Rica

Copacabana Hotel & Suites
Oyster

Located in Jaco, a party beach town and surfer’s paradise, the beachfront Copacabana Hotel & Suites attracts swingers and wild travelers of various ages. Why, you ask? Guests can choose from a clothing-optional or mandatory nude pool. This adults-only hotel also has a poolside sports bar called the Naked Iguana that offers music or entertainment until the wee hours, plus racy theme parties like Wet and Wild, Pura Vida, and Bubble Beach. Note that travelers can get a day pass for drinking and partaking in the fun, and some ladies may be here in search of paid company.

7. Rooftop Resort, Hollywood, Florida

Rooftop Resort
Rooftop Resort

The budget Rooftop Resort is an adults-only, nude-friendly swingers resort located a couple minutes’ walk from Hollywood Beach in Florida. This clothing-optional lifestyle resort is within walking distance of several restaurants, bars, and markets, plus the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is a 20-minute drive away. Features include a rooftop pool with Intracoastal and ocean views, a sauna, and playrooms for couples and groups. Swinging Studio Suites have a sexy black-and-red theme, “love slings,” and red-leather couches. Day passes and night passes are available, with some restrictions. The crowd here tends to be on the older side.

8. The Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada

The Palms Casino Resort
The Palms

The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas has been chosen for the swinger-packed Vegas Exchange Lifestyle Convention. With an off-the-strip location, the upscale hotel is a discreet playground for adults. Upon arriving, enjoy the pool complex that hosts Kaos Dayclub on weekends, a pool party spread over a couple of pools with a rotating roster of DJs. Want to get even more erotic? Opt for the two-bedroom Make Good Choices Suite, which has a large living room, bar area, and shower that can easily fit more than two people. Bars open 24/7 also help up the party vibe.

Best Value All-Inclusive Resorts https://www.oyster.com/articles/best-all-inclusives-resorts/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/best-all-inclusives-resorts/#respond Wed, 25 Oct 2023 15:27:25 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/articles/44575-the-12-best-bang-for-your-buck-all-inclusives-ever/

An all-inclusive resort often seems obvious when planning a budget-friendly vacation. Everything is (supposedly) included, so (supposedly) what you pay upfront is the only fee you’ll incur, and you can (supposedly) drink, dine, and play till your heart’s content. But unfortunately, some hotels that bill themselves as “all-inclusive” have plenty of caveats: VIP-only pools, limited dining hours, and hefty fees for just about anything extra — to name just a few. So you won’t be met with any surprises on your next getaway, we did the research and found 18 all-inclusive properties that truly offer a great bang for your buck. These hotels, in the Caribbean and Mexico, are the best for those looking for the most value.

1. Solmar Resort, Los Cabos

Pool and Beach at the Solmar Resort
SmarterTravel Hotels

This mid-range all-inclusive property is on the smaller side, so guests get all of the perks of an all-inclusive in a more intimate environment. It also means guests don’t get many food options; there are just a couple of restaurants on-site — one serves sushi, and the pool bar and snack bar also serve bites — but guests are entitled to eat free at a few restaurants at other Solmar properties. The real highlight is the hotel’s beachfront location, within walking distance of the marina and downtown. All rooms feature kitchenettes. Although the beach is not swimmable, the Solmar still attracts folks to the sandy stretch, plus its pool with a swim-up bar.

2. Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort & Spa

View of the Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort & Spa All Inclusive from the air over the ocean
SmarterTravel Hotels

A mega-resort, the Grand Palladium feels like a shopping mall but is expansive enough for privacy, romance, and fun. It has numerous pools (including the largest in Jamaica), large rooms, name-brand liquor, tasty breakfasts, mini-golf, and more — all for lower rates than lesser-equipped all-inclusive.

3. El Cozumeleno Beach Resort, Cozumel

Aerial view of the El Cozumeleño Beach Resort - All Inclusive
SmarterTravel Hotels

El Cozumeleño is a mid-range, all-inclusive resort located directly on a long, narrow beach in northern Cozumel. Its 252 rooms are no-frills; some have dated technology, but all units are spacious (especially those in the original building). The pools are the highlight here (one has a popular swim-up bar), but golf is also a draw due to the resort’s location across the street from a beloved golf course. Breakfast and lunch are pretty average, but dinner is tasty, and the menu changes every few days. Overall, the hotel is a solid pick for families and value travelers.

4. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

SmarterTravel Hotels

The massive, all-inclusive Hard Rock is a sleek option in Punta Cana, located on a gorgeous stretch of white-sand beach. Getting from one place to another on the sprawling property can take some time, but the hotel provides a shuttle. In addition, the size allows the resort to have broad appeal — it attracts families, couples, and partiers. The signature Hard Rock rocker vibe can be seen throughout the hotel, whether in the music-themed decor or the free guitar rentals. On-site amenities such as golf, an arcade center, and a sprawling fitness center help keep guests busy. There are plenty of dining options as well.

5. Royal Solaris Los Cabos

SmarterTravel Hotels

The 390-room, mid-range Royal Solaris is an affordable, all-inclusive option on the beach geared toward families. This attractive time-share property (beware of sales pitches) has ample amenities, including a massive outdoor pool, multiple restaurants, a spa, and more. Rooms have traditional furnishings and balconies — though some are tiny. Daily activities keep the masses occupied, and while the beautiful beach is typically not swimmable, it offers tons of sandy space and loungers under thatched umbrellas. Thanks to kid’s and teen’s clubs, nightly entertainment, dance classes, and a water park, families are the norm — but couples can relax at the spa or adult-only pool.

6. Samba Vallarta – All Inclusive, Puerto Vallarta

View of the Samba Vallarta from over the ocean
SmarterTravel Hotels

Compared to the many massive hotels at the north end of Nuevo Vallarta, the Samba Vallarta’s 183-room, four-story Spanish colonial-style building feels pleasantly small-scale — and the pools and beach tend to be less crowded than elsewhere. The clean rooms have basic, contemporary beach decor (light woods, turquoise bed skirts, and runners), and the general ambiance of the property is family-friendly and relaxed. This affordable mid-range property is a fine choice for those who want to go the all-inclusive route but don’t want a mega-resort experience.

7. Riu Palace Pacifico All-Inclusive, Riviera Nayarit

View of the pool and ocean at the Riu Palace Pacifico
SmarterTravel Hotels

The Spanish hotel company Riu offers three classes of all-inclusive in Nuevo Vallarta, and the 445-room Palace Pacifico is the top dog — but offers a solid bang for your buck. The grounds are immaculate, sprawling with lush, towering palms and perfectly manicured garden walkways dotted with high-end lounge seating — and the expansive pool, with a swim-up bar and in-pool lounges and bistro tables, isn’t too shabby either. Room decor, however, while nice, is nothing special. Dining options are plentiful (always a plus at an all-inclusive).

8. Hotel Riu Palace Riviera Maya

Aerial view of the Riu Palace Riviera Maya
SmarterTravel Hotels

The 400-room, all-inclusive Riu Palace Riviera Maya sits on the soft, sugar-white beach of Playa del Carmen’s Playacar. Surrounded by towering palm trees and expertly groomed greenery, the property is like luxurious tropical eye candy. Architecturally speaking, the hotel puts a stylish spin on the charming, traditional Mexican estate, resulting in an opulent-meets-old-world ambiance. The lobby — decked out in marble floors and huge chandeliers — also has an impressive rotunda and radiant glass-stained ceiling panes. There is a good variety of food options, plus a small spa and fitness center. But the pool is probably the highlight here — it’s expansive.

9. Hotel Riu Palace Paradise Island, Bahamas

SmarterTravel Hotels

The Riu Palace Paradise Island, located next door to mega-resort The Royal at Atlantis, is one of the few all-inclusive resorts in the Bahamas. The 379 rooms and suites have been renovated with contemporary decor and include Riu trademarks, such as stocked minibars with liquor dispensers and 24-hour room service (both of which are free). The buffet spreads change often, and four a la carte options help stave off all-inclusive monotony. After dinner, there’s typical all-inclusive nightly entertainment. The Riu brand spa, Renova, offers couples massages and treatments.

10. Dreams Onyx Punta Cana

Located on Punta Cana’s quiet Uvero Alto Beach, Dreams Onyx Punta Cana offers amenities galore: a beautiful beach, two freshwater infinity pools with swim-up bars, a saltwater pool for kids, free non-motorized water sports, a full-service spa with options for kids, and a teens’ club. Restaurants include buffets, Asian and French a la carte options, and numerous bars across the property. The 502 modern rooms have free minibars, rainfall showers, and balconies featuring whirlpool tubs.

11. Excellence Punta Cana

SmarterTravel Hotels

An adults-only hotel with a lovely secluded beach, the Excellence Punta Cana underwent a 45-million-dollar renovation in 2017. What can you expect from the luxury all-inclusive today? Two outdoor swimming pools — one that nearly extends the length of the property — and a two-story spa with a free-to-use hydrotherapy circuit. The fabulous all-inclusive package covers top-shelf liquor, lobster, 12 bars, and 10 gourmet restaurants serving everything from Mexican to French fare. To top it off, the 450 contemporary suites all have jetted tubs, well-stocked free minibars, and free welcome sparkling wine.

12. The Caves, Jamaica

SmarterTravel Hotels

With a dramatic cliffside setting in Negril, this adults-only all-inclusive is considered one of Jamaica’s most special resorts — albeit one with high nightly rates. Meals and drinks are included, but the offerings here go above and beyond typical all-inclusive fare. Private five-course dinners, held by candlelight in one of the grottos at the base of the cliffs, are included in the rates (reservations are required). Drinks at the grotto-housed Blackwell Rum Bar and The Sands clifftop bar are free, as are authentic jerk barbecue nights. Room service is also available, and the hotel offers cooking classes on request once a week. Minibars in the 11 cottages and suites are re-stocked daily with free beer, liquor, water, juice, and snacks. Other freebies include snorkeling and kayaking trips, as well as lessons on how to safely cliff jump, on-site parking, bike rentals, and Wi-Fi are all free.

13. Iberostar Grand Hotel Rose Hall, Jamaica

Aerial view of the Iberostar Grand Rose Hall from over the ocean
SmarterTravel Hotels

The best of the three Iberostar resorts in Montego Bay, the Grand Hotel Rose Hall comes out on top of its neighbors when it comes to decor, food, and features. While some elements remain shared with the lesser Iberostar Rose Hall Beach and Iberostar Rose Hall Suites — the spa, fitness center, casino, nightclub, and shops, for example — guests here also get free access to all three resorts’ restaurants, bars, pools, and beaches. More good news: The all-inclusive rates cover all meals (including specialty restaurants and room service), top-shelf liquor, non-motorized water sports, and a free round of golf with a three-night (or longer) stay. The price might be higher than neighboring hotels, but for good reason.

14. Jewel Paradise Cove Resort & Spa Runaway Bay, Jamaica

SmarterTravel Hotels

Located about a 30-minute drive from Ocho Rios, the upscale, adults-only Jewel Paradise Cove Resort & Spa offers great value. All-inclusive rates include tasty food and drinks, as well as glass-bottom boat tours, a daily scuba dive (for certified divers), a sunset cruise, a reef snorkeling excursion, use of non-motorized water sports equipment (kayaks, peddle boats, Hobie Cats), pool and beachside movies, a Konoko Falls tour, and a shopping tour.

15. Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa, Jamaica

Aerial view of the Hilton Rose Hall from the ocean
SmarterTravel Hotels

Affordable all-inclusive rates, a lagoon-style pool complex with Jamaica’s largest water park, and varied dining options are all reasons to book a stay at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa. On top of that, rooms are contemporary, and the all-inclusive package covers all food, all non-premium brand liquor, draft beer, and wine by the glass, non-motorized water sports, access to the kids’ club, Wi-Fi, and daytime activities and classes. The hotel’s wide, private beach is lovely, and it’s a 15-minute drive to Montego Bay’s Hip Strip restaurants and shops for those looking to leave the resort. Guests who stay put can enjoy the evening music and shows.

16. Royalton Bavaro Resort & Spa, Dominican Republic

Aerial view of the Royalton Bavaro from over the ocean

Food is good, too, and the all-inclusive package covers all buffet meals and unlimited meals at any of the a la carte restaurants. In addition to these amenities, the resort houses spacious, elegant rooms with big tubs and terraces. Want to take things to the next level? Travelers looking for a more exclusive stay can upgrade to the Diamond Club, which offers great perks such as private pools and beach areas, butler service, preferential restaurant reservations, and additional in-room amenities.

2. Sandals LaSource Grenada

Sandals LaSource Grenada

This 225-room luxury all-inclusive, couples-only resort is set over a sprawling 17-acre property on the southwestern tip of Grenada. It’s definitely geared for romance rather than partiers, with romantic touches such as fire pits, gazebos, and swinging chairs on a pier looking out over the water. All of those features add up to make the property distinctly Sandals. Some rooms have private pools, soaking tubs, and butler service, and the sophisticated, modern decor is a major draw here. The white-sand beach is lovely, if a bit small for the size of the property.

3. Excellence Playa Mujeres, Mexico

Excellence Playa Mujeres, Mexico

Excellence resorts are so nice we named them twice (in this list, at least). Here, the Excellence outpost sits to the north of Cancún, in the posh Playa Mujeres resort community. Modern, luxurious rooms are huge and have big whirlpool tubs; while certain categories have swim-up access or private plunge pools. Features are almost too numerous to count and include seven pools, 10 restaurants, 11 bars, and a high-end spa. The secluded location is part of the appeal for many, but keep in mind that you’re not coming here to party like a rock star. Instead, the vibe is a blend of just lively enough and tranquil, and the beach is pretty as a picture.

11. TRS Coral Hotel, Playa Mujeres, Mexico

TRS Coral Hotel, Playa Mujeres, Mexico

TRS resorts are all-inclusive vacationing done right. Again, like the best of this list, the property manages to blend just the right amount of buzz with every possible opportunity to relax and unwind. Like its sibling down the coast in Akumal, TRS Yucatan, you’ll find plenty of activities in and around the pool during the day, though you’re just as likely to see couples and friends lazing away the day in the shade sipping tropical drinks and margaritas. Dining at the resort is excellent, with high-end cuisines from Spain, the Mediterranean, and — of course — Mexico all on offer. The presentation is amazing, and the drinks are also inventive (we recommend saving plenty of room for dessert at every meal). A multi-course gastronomic dinner and an impressive song-and-dance show at Chic Cabaret are also included in the rates. Best of all? The beach is a stunner.

12. Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya, Mexico

This part of the Hard Rock Riviera Maya is for adults only and has four of its own restaurants (though guests have access to those at the main Hard Rock as well). There’s also a nightclub with DJs, plenty of bars, a great spa, and an overall good-time vibe that’s hard to beat.

The 74 rooms have classic colonial style with four-poster beds and private butler service, and some have beautiful sea views. The free airport shuttle is an unexpected extra. Gone are the rowdy crowds many traditionally associate with all-inclusive resorts; the feel here is relaxed and secluded.

14. Galley Bay Resort & Spa, Antigua

Galley Bay Resort & Spa, Antigua

The relaxed, tranquil environment of this adults-only boutique resort is a major part of its appeal — and you won’t find any children under 16. You also shouldn’t expect cutting-edge contemporary style, as this resort is for travelers who really want to unplug and don’t need a ton of frills. What does Galley Bay offer then? A truly gorgeous beach, and all-inclusive food that’s better than average for Antigua. Non-motorized water sports are also included in the rate.
