1. The Love Hotel Design: Hotel Amour, Paris

Room at Hotel Amour

Wait. In the bottom left corner, is that..? Yes, yes it is. In fact, Hotel Amour is replete with phallic and nude-y paraphernalia. The hotel’s design was inspired by the Japanese model of love hotels, and the owners have invested a tidy sum of money in developing the concept; for example, they hired the services of well-known fashion designer Chantal Thomass to design certain rooms, like the one shown above, that are sure to get guests in the mood for, well, “amour.” Appropriately situated in the heart of the Pigalle quarter, which is known among tourists for its sex shops and adult theaters, the hotel is just a 10-minute walk from the infamous Moulin Rouge.

2. The Swinger-Friendly Policy: Desire Pearl Resort & Spa, Riviera Maya

Beach at Desire Pearl Resort and Spa, Riviera Maya

The Desire Pearl is a couples-only all-inclusive resort that caters to those looking for a party scene; and all areas of the resort are completely clothing-optional. While couples can remain tete-a-tete on the white-sand beach or in the spacious rooms, most opt to join others at the pool’s swim-up bar or in the sexy nightclub, complete with swings, stripper poles, and a “sin room.” The resort also has nightly parties with themes such as “burlesque night” and “mysterious masquerade.” One thing you won’t have to worry about? What to wear!

3. The Bedside Reading: Night Theater District

Room at the Night Hotel New York

The Night Theater District may be just a few blocks from Times Square, but couples can still get plenty of shuteye — or at least private bedroom time, wink wink — thanks to heavy blackout drapes that are in keeping with the hotel’s “night” theme. Other sexy amenities include under-lit beds topped with luxe Frette linens, and a sleek black-and-white color scheme. But the naughtiest feature is hidden in the nightstand: Opening the drawer, guests with find Kama Sutra books for some inspirational bedtime reading.

4. The Pleasure Menu: The Drake Hotel, Toronto

Room at the Drake Hotel

Complete with a popular club-meets-music-venue, The Drake Hotel attracts a young, hip crowd. Rooms may be small, but they’re sleek and stylish, with glassed-in showers that look out at the bedrooms and cool artwork on the exposed-brick walls. Mood-inducing pleasure menus also come standard; guests can “order in” their pick of flavored condoms, sex toys, and, er, props. Oh, and you can also actually order food such as chocolate truffles and oysters — both of which being known aphrodisiacs.

5. The Naughty or Nice Package: Z Hotel, New York City

Room at the Z NYC Hotel

The Z is a hip boutique in Long Island City, Queens, and its reasonable rates alone will get guests in the mood for some hanky panky. But the Z doesn’t stop there. The hotel offers “naughty” and “nice” packages. While both offerings include a one-night’s stay, “nice” packages feature champagne and roses, in-room massages, and breakfast in bed. An intimacy kit (with edible underwear, handcuffs, a tickle feather, and blindfolds), a book of erotic games, and chocolate strawberries and champagne come with the “naughty” package. We have a feeling which you’re going to choose…

6. The (Super) Exposed Bathroom: The Standard High Line, New York City

Bathroom at the Standard High Line

The Standard is sexy to begin with: This Meatpacking hot spot features a popular gourmet restaurant, an outdoor biergarten that is bustling come spring, and an exclusive rooftop nightclub. But the hotel shows it’s naughty side in it’s massive, immaculate rooms. With a sleek design, rooms feature plush bedding, comfy robes, minibars stocked with gourmet snacks and top-shelf liquor, and — the most flasher-friendly feature — floor-to-ceiling windows (even in some of the bathrooms) that look out over the Hudson River and surrounding neighborhood. These windows are notorious for showcasing some nudie activities, startling many locals and tourists ambling along the High Line below.

7. The Love Room: Library Hotel, New York City

Love room at the Library Hotel

A homey, literary-themed boutique — located down the block from the city’s famous Public Library — the Library Hotel is a romantic pick. And it offers a solid value, too, with freebies like breakfast, Wi-Fi, and afternoon wine and cheese. The afternoon treats are the perfect way to cap off a day of sight-seeing and head back to your room, which is particularly enticing if you’re staying in the Love Room. This room is the only one with a terrace, which overlooks Madison Avenue, and the erotica book collection, which decorates the space, was curated by Dr. Ruth.

8. The Topless Party Haven: Temptation Cancun Resort

Pool area at Temptation Cancun Resort

This 21-plus resort in Cancun’s Hotel Zone is the life of the party — and tops are very optional. It recently underwent a major renovation that brings a sexy elegance to the hotel, but it still retains its party-hard mentality. There are dozens of provocative events to bring together couples and singles alike, from Temptation Idol karaoke to risqué shows at night.

9. The Champagne Glass-Shaped Hot Tub Experience: Cove Haven Resort

The Champagne Tower Suite at Cove Haven Resort

Back in the day, the Poconos were all the rage when it came to steamy getaways. The couples-only Cove Haven resort nods to these gaudier days with heart-shaped whirlpool tubs, mirrors on the ceilings to see all the best angles, and romance-themed fantasy decor but the “pièce de résistance” is the room with a Champagne glass-shaped whirlpool.

10. The Upscale Clothing-Optional Pick: Hidden Beach Resort, Riviera Maya

Bed at Hidden Beach Resort

The luxurious Hidden Beach Resort by Karisma is an adults-only, clothing-optional resort located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. This all-inclusive property is set along an attractive stretch of beach, though it’s too rocky for real swimming. Instead, guests can hang out at the large pool, which has a swim-up bar and hosts communal activities such as volleyball. The 42 elegant rooms here are all suite-style, outfitted with two-person hot tubs, ocean-view outdoor spaces, and free minibars. Ground-floor units offer swim-out access. There’s only one restaurant, minimal nightlife, and no spa, but guests can use all facilities at the next-door El Dorado Seaside Suites, though clothing is required. Visitors tend to be in the 50-and-over crowd, and the atmosphere is relaxed.

11. The Couples-Only Option: Desire Riviera Maya Resort

Beach at the Desire Riviera Maya Resort

While there are other couples-only clothing-optional resorts on this list (Desire Riviera Maya Pearl Resort and Cove Haven Resort), we have a soft spot for Desire Rivera Maya Resort, an all-inclusive that attracts a mix of older married couples, young nudists, and swingers. This swish property has an explicit sexual atmosphere, as public sex is allowed in the whirlpool area and the Sin Room — a space equipped with round beds and straps for those who want to take part in activities with their partners and other guests. Sexy theme nights are also popular nighttime experiences. Non-sexual on-site amenities include a lovely ocean-view pool and hot tub, small spa with a variety of treatments, and four restaurants serving Japanese, Mediterranean, and international buffet-style fare.

12. The “Prude” and “Nude” Retreat: Hedonism II, Jamaica

Beach at Hedonism II

Designed for adventurous couples who want to add a bit of spice to their vacation, the all-inclusive Hedonism II is a popular nudist resort tucked into a quiet, private section of Negril’s Seven Mile Beach. With a wide variety of activities and entertainment, this adults-only resort encourages guests to explore their wild side and indulge themselves. There are both “prude” and “nude” sections of the resort to accommodate different comfort levels, and property highlights include the nude beach, waterslide, and a variety of pools and whirlpools on both sides. Guests who want to explore the area are close to a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops in downtown Negril.

13. The Nude Beach Spot: Couples Sans Souci, Jamaica

Beach at Couples Sans Souci

The 148-room Couples Sans Souci is a beachfront all-inclusive resort occupying 35 acres just outside of Ocho Rios on Jamaica’s central northern coast. The lush grounds house waterfalls, grottos, beaches, lakes, and jungles, making for a gorgeous tropical setting. In addition to a great spa, there are four pools and two beaches — the au naturel beach is larger and nude-only from morning until evening. It has an adjacent pool — something the main beach doesn’t — which makes it pretty alluring. Rooms have colonial-inspired nautical style, furnished balconies or terraces, and coffeemakers, plus hot tubs in suites.

Big Sur is considered one of the most healing places in the world, and no resort takes more advantage of this stunning natural setting than the Post Ranch Inn. The organic architecture is breathtaking, seeming to grow out of the ground beside the hotel’s surrounding redwoods, and the spacious, eco-sensitive rooms have ocean or mountain views, as well as wood-burning fireplaces and private decks. Free activities include yoga and stargazing, and the acclaimed spa has shamanistic services including illumination, soul retrieval, divination, and fire and drum ceremonies. This all helps make Post Ranch Inn is one of the most unique and luxe properties on this list, and the pristine Northern California setting is hard to top if you’re looking to recharge yourself.

2. Miraval Arizona, Tucson

The Villa at the Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa

The Miraval Arizona resort is one of the most famous wellness retreats in the United States — and for good reason. Tucked into the ruggedly beautiful Sonoran Desert, a stay here is individually customized from a weekly catalogue of 120 fitness and yoga classes, outdoor activities, and wellness workshops. The centerpiece of the pampering here is the stunning spa, which is one of the best in the country, as well as three swimming pools and a modern gym. While it has a more rustic atmosphere than the entries listed above, that down-to-earth vibe is part of the appeal. There are six indoor and outdoor shalas as well as an international staff of incredibly talented instructors, plus a wide menu of other diverse fitness offerings, like Pilates, indoor cycling, and dance. This is a wellness resort through and through — expect green smoothies and energy shots at the juice bar, and only healthy, organic food at the restaurant. Travelers who aren’t interested in a holistic vacation might feel out of place, though with incredible surfing and a beautiful beach just down the road, you’d be missing out if you give the Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort a pass.

4. Gora Kadan, Japan

Men's Hot Spring Bath at the Gora Kadan

One of Japan’s most well-known luxury ryokan, Gora Kadan is the kind of place that makes you feel spirited away from literally all of life’s problems. Tucked high in the mountains of Hakone, one of Japan’s most famous hot springs regions, Gora Kadan takes the spartan appeal of traditional Japanese ryokan — traditional inns outfitted with rice paper doors and tatami mats — and elevates is to posh heights. Here, aside from the stunning onsen, spacious rooms feature clean lines and outdoor areas meant to soak up the healing vibe of the region. 6. Six Senses Zighy Bay, Oman

The Saltwater Pool at Six Senses Zighy Bay

While you’d do well for your health and wellbeing at almost any Six Senses resort, we particularly love the desert-meets-sea setting of the Six Senses Zighy Bay, in Oman. Here, rugged landscapes crash dramatically to the ocean and there’s almost nothing around to distract you from unwinding and nourishing your spirit. It’s an incredibly luxurious property, with villas that all feature private pools (and some that open directly to the beach), as well as dining options that include regional and international fare. On the wellness front, the Six Senses Zighy Bay has numerous programs ranging from three days to a week, and include options for detoxifying the body, weight loss, yoga, and sleep. Lounge at the Haramara Retreat

Haramara is arguably one of the most special hotels in Mexico. It is a luxurious yoga retreat located on 12 seaside acres of wild vegetation just outside Sayulita, one of the artsier hubs of the Riviera Nayarit. The structures have been built using traditional construction techniques to minimize the environmental impact, and there is no electricity anywhere besides the restaurant and the yoga studio — not even in the rooms. Each room is housed in a private standalone thatched hut with no window panes or screens separating it from the jungle, and only gauze curtains and mosquito nets to avoid bugs and critters. It is geared towards those in need of some detoxification and relaxation, with yoga and meditation classes, an open-air spa, a vegetarian and seafood restaurant, unpaved walking trails, and limited cell phone service.

9. Blackberry Farm, Tennessee

Small amenities cabin at the Blackberry Farm

One of the most luxurious all-inclusive resorts in the world, Blackberry Farm is a special place no matter how you cut it. And as the years pass — and the hotel continues to be one of the best in the United States — it’s still evolving. The most recent addition are Wellness Bootcamps, which take place seasonally and include personalized training schedules in a variety of focus areas from strength to meditation. Of course, the resort’s spa is one of the reasons people flock here, where its own products are used in a wide array of treatments and services. The wellness vibe is only enhanced by the cozy, plush rooms amid the rolling hills of Tennessee.

10. COMO Shambhala Estate, Bali

The Pool - Wanakasa (Forest in the Mist Residence) at the COMO Shambhala Estate

Like its sister properties around the world — in Turks & Caicos, the Maldives, and Phuket — COMO’s Bali outpost is flush with wellness offerings. It also has some of the most stunning design details in the brand, along with a beautiful setting amid the jungle-clad mountains and ravines in central Bali. There are only 30 rooms at the Como Shambhala Estate, making it a peaceful oasis that attracts travelers seeking a health-conscious getaway. True to the brand, the spa here is excellent, offering a vast array of holistically inspired treatments and services. That ethos trickles into the hotel’s dining program as well, with delicious health-focused meals at two restaurants. One of the most striking aspects to this property, though, are the rooms, some of which have rich wood detailing that are likely to transport you to another era in time. If you’re in the mood to truly spoil yourself, opt for a villa in the jungle with its own plunge pool.

11. Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat, Bahamas

Beach at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat

This is a serious ashram by an established group (there are nine Sivananda Yoga Ashrams throughout the world) and the 5:30 a.m. wake-up bell proves it. Here, 28 different hot springs pools are strewn throughout lush jungle across 165 acres of land, dotted here and there with all sorts of amenities. Fire pit at Sand Bar & Grill at the Hidden Pond

Spread over 60 acres, the Hidden Pond resort is one of those places that feels like it’s made for wellness, even if it’s not overtly a wellness retreat. The hotel also provides a free shuttle to the beach, which is just a five-minute drive away.

Even if you don’t book a wellness package, the gorgeous pool, swish spa, fitness center and free classes, and spa-worthy bathrooms with indoor-outdoor showers all make this Rosewood one of the nicest in the brand portfolio. The made-to-order smoothies at breakfast are also hard to argue with. The resort’s wellness program has more formal offerings in the form of Asaya, Rosewood Phuket’s suite of wellness programs that include retreats, programs, workshops, and a variety of alternative therapies ranging from sound therapy to mindful movement practice.

18. Borgo San Pietro, Tuscany

1. La Maison Favart

Situated in the chic Opera area of Paris, this elegant hotel pairs classic interiors with modern conveniences like towel warmers and free movies in the 18th-century inspired rooms. While the decor and location are reasons enough to choose this 30-room property, the biggest draw may be its indoor pool — unusual for a boutique hotel in Paris. There is also a simple, but functional, fitness center and a sauna.

2. Saint James Paris

With a storied history and bold decor, the luxury Saint James Paris is a destination in its own right. After all, it’s the only chateau hotel in all of Paris. This Relais & Châteaux property sits in the sleek 16th Arrondissement and features opulent interiors, including a Michelin-starred restaurant, a Moroccan-style Guerlain spa, and 49 elegant and markedly spacious guest rooms outfitted with period furnishings. There are also three-story villas — one with its own spa — that are perfect for honeymooners seeking privacy.

3. Relais Christine

Sandwiched between the Latin Quarter and the River Seine, this Left Bank property is conveniently situated near many of Paris’ most important attractions, though you may find it difficult to leave. Rooms are stylish, with marble bathrooms and private balconies in some, and there are numerous indoor and outdoor areas to relax, along with an on-site spa that uses products from French luxury house Guerlain.

4. Le Royal Monceau-Raffles Paris

If you’ve got a healthy budget and are seeking a fashionable hotel that’s also close to luxury shopping along the swanky Champs-Élysées, this property won’t disappoint. With 149 rooms, it’s a bit larger than your average boutique hotel, but it has plenty of charm and elegance — not to mention a whole host of sleek amenities, from a modern fitness center and a huge indoor swimming pool to a Michelin-starred restaurant and an on-site 3D theater with 99 seats.

5. Hotel Raphael

Only one block from the Arc de Triomphe, this luxurious property features grandly furnished common areas (a J. M. W. Turner painting hangs on one of the walls) along with equally ornate rooms adorned with delicate crown molding, chandeliers, and stylish period furniture. The highlight, however, is the rooftop garden with views overlooking the Parisian skyline. The space is even furnished with dining areas and sofas in the summer months.

6. Hotel La Villa Saint-Germain

Located right on Rue Jacob, a small Saint-Germain-des-Pres road lined with small shops and bakeries, this 31-room property features fresh and modern interiors, with clean lines and whimsical details, from flowers, plants, and succulents in the lobby to animal figurines in the rooms. Everything here is scaled down, from the small, but bright, fitness room to the minimalist breakfast room, though some of the rooms are quite spacious and a couple of categories even have separate living rooms and bedrooms.

7. Le Relais Montmartre

Situated at the base of the Montmartre neighborhood, not far from the Sacré-Cœur, this tiny hotel is ideal for romantics. It remains quiet and peaceful, despite the neighborhood’s nightlife scene, and exudes a quintessentially Parisian vibe (scenes from the film “Amelie” were filmed a block away). The bright rooms are charmingly decorated with patterned wallpapers, bedspreads, and curtains, and some rates include breakfast, which is served in the stone cellar and can be enjoyed on the patio. If you don’t mind the frilly aesthetic, it’s a great place to stay without breaking the bank, and soundproofed rooms make it a great choice for light sleepers, too.

8. Hotel des Grands Boulevards

Located on the Right Bank, in a commercial area full of bars and brasseries, this property offers a nice blend of contemporary and old-school touches. It’s set inside a French Revolution-era building, and houses 50 beautiful suites that mix natural elements (think driftwood side tables) with elegant details like marble countertops, Sjostrand espresso machines, and handmade beds with satin sheets. There’s also a swanky cocktail bar furnished with lots of brass and velvet plus a chic restaurant where dishes are served on handmade Greek pottery. And if going out dancing is on your honeymoon agenda, this hotel is just a block away from the Rex Club, a longstanding techno and house music venue.

9. Grand Pigalle Hotel

Located in the lively Pigalle area, this hotel has plenty of hipster cachet — a departure from some of Paris’ more old-fashioned properties. Plus, it’s reasonably priced given all of the perks that come with a stay here. Rooms feature vintage decor and modern amenities (think VoIP phones with free calling), and most have rainfall showers. There’s also a sleek restaurant and bar with around-the-clock room service and a solid cocktail menu, as well as a wine cellar with around 200 options available.

10. Hotel du Cadran

A short jaunt from the Eiffel Tower, this reasonably priced property offers a relaxed atmosphere with an inviting, retro-style lobby and cozy (and in some cases, tiny) rooms — all with stylish decor and minibars. The rooms, which are located in the main building and an across-the-street annex, are also equipped with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and modern bathrooms. The breakfast buffet is served in a cavern-like space and there’s a tiny private spa that’s exclusively for hotel guests (it can only be booked by one party at a time).

11. Bel Ami Hotel

A modern alternative to the many classical boutique properties situated in the upscale Saint-Germain-des-Pres area, Bel Ami features larger-than-average rooms with bright decor, but it’s the amenities that really stand out here. These include a stylish on-site restaurant with a popular weekend brunch service and a small spa attached to a 24-hour fitness center. Meanwhile, the hotel’s lobby bar is a stylish spot to have a glass of wine or Champagne cocktails. To top it off, the 108 rooms and suites here have a sleek, nautical-inspired look, and all come with minibars, free Wi-Fi, and modern bathrooms.

12. The Hoxton

The Hoxton brand (which has other locations in LondonAmsterdam, Portland, and Brooklyn) is known for its social-friendly vibe — and this Paris outpost is no exception. The 172-room boutique property is geared toward younger travelers, with a speakeasy-inspired cocktail bar and lots of open space for working and mingling. While it’s certainly not the typical spot to spend your honeymoon, it does offer amenities that cater to couples, including a wine bar with cheese and charcuterie and an art gallery showcasing original works. Rivie, the hotel’s all-day restaurant, bar, and, lounge, serves every meal and a popular weekend brunch, and rooms feature flat-screen TVs, vintage-style radios, and minimalist-chic decor.

13. Hotel Baume

Tucked away on a quiet lane near the Latin Quarter, this romantic 35-room property evokes a 1930s-inspired atmosphere. That’s in part thanks to its use of crushed velvets, vintage-style mirrors, and damasks in rooms. While ambience and location are the main draws here, guests can also expect an ivy-covered back garden, a variety of continental cooked breakfast options, and an honor bar in the lobby.

14. Hotel Duc de Saint Simon

If you’re looking for a traditional Parisian hotel with romantic and historic flair, Hotel Duc de Saint Simon is unlikely to disappoint. Lauren Bacall stayed here while in Paris, which should tip you off about the clientele today: folks with a large budget. The 34 rooms have ornate, Old World decor (think patterned wallpaper and lots of old-fashioned artwork), and provide guests with flat-screen TVs, large bathrooms (by European standards), and plush bathrobes. Guests can also enjoy a Champagne breakfast in the underground cellar, complete with exposed brick, gold-framed mirrors, Persian rugs, and oil paintings.

15. Hotel Le Six

Situated in the artsy Montparnasse area, southwest of the Luxembourg Gardens, Hotel Le Six is a boutique hotel with sophisticated vibes and lots of common areas (fitting, since a hostel once stood here). Highlights include a fitness center and a miniature spa offering massages, facials, and steam treatments. The lobby is cozy, with a fireplace and communal high-top table, and a glass-roofed winter garden and library-like hangout provide more spaces to relax. The organic breakfast is an excellent touch and guests can have it sent straight to their rooms for some romantic breakfast in bed.

Everything You Need to Know About Mallorca: Where to Stay, What to Do, When to Visit, and More https://www.oyster.com/articles/everything-you-need-to-know-about-mallorca/ Tue, 06 Aug 2019 21:35:21 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/?p=471004

The Best Time to Visit Mallorca

Summer in Mallorca

It is no surprise that the vast majority of visitors to Mallorca arrive during the sweltering summer months. Of the 10 million-plus annual tourists, many are northern Europeans — namely, British and German. Most visitors are absorbed into the high-rise hotels of the main resorts such as Magaluf and El Arenal on the south coast, and spread across the huge sweeping bays of Alcúdia and Pollenca in the northeast. Inevitable crowding aside, the weather during these months (June through August) is ideal for lounging on one of the many outstanding beaches with clear, calm waters, guaranteed sunshine, and an occasional gentle breeze to help with overheating. In fact, from July onwards, it is usually too hot to do much else beyond reclining next to water, so choosing a hotel with a decent-sized pool or easy beach access is a good idea. Head to the beach early, though, as most fill up quickly.

Fall in Mallorca

For many, fall is the best time to visit the island, when most of the summer crowds have melted away, but the weather is still beach-friendly and the sea still warm. September is a particularly popular time for couples, as kids are back at school, leaving more space (and peace and quiet) for child-free visitors. The beginning of fall is also when most of the main harvests take place on Mallorca, with many of its rural villages and towns throwing festivals to celebrate. Local products include almonds, mushrooms, and pine nuts, each with their associated local fiestas.

As the temperatures start to drop, fall also sees the return of cyclists on the island. From novices to professional cycling teams, up to 250,000 people come every year to take advantage of some of the best cycling in Europe. From the flat central plains to the Serra de Tramuntana’s many winding mountain roads, there are conditions for all biking levels.

Winter in Mallorca

View of Palma, Mallorca

Palma, Mallorca; Mario Klassen/unsplash

Although it used to bring little more than a trickle of visitors, winter is becoming an increasingly popular season. It’s the capital, Palma, that sees most of the winter arrivals, thanks to its many attractions. Visitors can immerse themselves in the fascinating history and explore the cobbled lanes, quaint leafy plazas, and grand medieval structures, such as the iconic La Seu cathedral and hilltop Bellver Castle. The number of excellent boutique hotels in the capital has proliferated to accommodate the trend. Most of these take the form of centuries-old palacios, now converted into elegant, luxury hotels that offer world-class lodging with a glimpse into the once-hidden world of the island’s nobility.

Earlier in the winter season, hiking is a favorite activity, with countless footpaths cutting through the picturesque northern mountain range. The Dry Stone Route is the best maintained, comprising four trails through pine forests, scenic mounts, and along elevated coastal paths.

In addition to some spectacular Christmas celebrations, winter also sees one of the island’s most dramatic festivals — that of Sant Sebastià, Palma’s patron saint. This mid-January, week-long fiesta culminates in a night of spectacular street carnivals featuring terrifying demons wielding and breathing fire.

Spring in Mallorca

Soller, Mallorca View

Spring sees the island stirring from its winter slumber, with sunny days and warm weather returning. One of the first signs of spring is the famous almond blossom, when thousands of almond trees burst into bloom filling parts of the landscape with a beautiful show of white flowers.

With mild temperatures and clear roads, spring is also great time to jump in a car and explore the many charming villages and towns – Deià, Valldemossa, Sóller, Pollença, Fornalutx. Santanyí — on the island. This time of year is also ideal for a boat trip to one of Mallorca’s two islets — Sa Dragonera off the northwest coast and Cabrera to the south (both are inhabited nature reserves). Of course, the beaches are much quieter in comparison to summer, but the water has not had much time to warm up, so bathing is reserved for the brave. That being said, and spring is a great time to try one of the many water sports on offer, from kitesurfing to paddleboarding.

The Best Beaches in Mallorca

Cala Mondragó

Cala Mondragó beach from above in Mallorca

Cala Mondragó; Falco Ermert/Flickr

Part of the Mondragó Natural Park, this picture-perfect beach is one of a series of small coves on this stretch of coastline in the southeast part of the island. Perfect for families, the sand here is soft and white, and the water clear, calm, and clean.  There’s a small beachside restaurant as well as a large picnic area with tables in the shade, plus a good-sized car park a short stroll away.

Es Trenc

Undoubtedly one of the island’s most beautiful beaches, Es Trenc is often referred to as Mallorca’s Caribbean. The long stretch of white sand and turquoise waters are backed by sand dunes and wind-swept trees. With no intruding high-rise hotels and tourist shops, this beach has a wild feel to it, particularly in low season. In the high season, it gets very busy, so we recommend arriving early. The nearest resort town is Colonia de Sant Jordi.

Cap de Formentor

Cap de Formentor Lighthouse View in Mallorca

Cap de Formentor; Sergei Gussev/Flickr

This narrow, curved strip of sand backed by pine trees may be fairly small, but it has the most incredible views. Given its location on the Formentor peninsula, accessing this beach either involves a boat trip or a drive on a very windy road. If driving, make sure to stop at the Mirador Es Colomer to admire the breathtaking vistas. Behind this beautiful beach lies the Formentor Hotel, very much a place of old-school glamour (Charlie Chaplin vacationed at the hotel, and Grace Kelly spent her honeymoon here).

Portals Vells

Portals Vells is stunning small cove, reached either by boat or a drive through surrounding pine forest. There’s a restaurant on the beach and a few sunbeds, but that’s it. Popular with locals, and impossible to access using public transport, this beach gets particularly busy on Sundays. The sand is soft, the water clear, and you can admire the nearby cliffs, caves, and collection of yachts usually anchored in the bay. There’s a car park at the back of the beach and another farther up the hill. A short climb over the rocks will lead you to another similar beach, but it’s smaller and lacks a restaurant.

Cala Torta

Those seeking a remote beach will find what they’re looking for here. A half-hour drive down a windy, bumpy, and pot-hole-filled track gets you to Cala Torta, near the small town of Artá. But stunning water, great snorkeling, and soft white sand make the drive worthwhile. Make sure you pack a picnic and plenty of drinking water as there is nothing but nature here.

Playa de Muro

Located in the northeast part of the island, Playa de Muro is part of the vast stretch of sand in the Bay of Alcúdia. It is hugely popular with families, thanks to the array of nearby hotels, shallow waters, and easily accessible play parks, restaurants, and supermarkets. The central section of the beach is the quietest as it’s the farthest away from the resorts of Can Picafort and Port d’Alcúdia. This quieter part of the beach is backed by sand dunes and the S’Albufera Natural Park.

Cala Mesquida

One of the most spectacular beaches in the northeast part of the island, Cala Mesquida is a big swathe of sand, flanked by impressive sand dunes and dramatic rugged coastline. The water is clean and clear, but it can get very windy here, so the sea is not always great for kids. That being said, it is one of the few places on the island where you go surfing. Facilities include loungers and parasols for hire, plus a restaurant and snack bar.

Comtessa

Illetas’ smaller sister, Comtessa, is located just around the corner and is also easy to reach by bus from Palma, but with the added bonus of a car park. The beach itself is small, but the cove is pretty and the water is clear and great for kids. There is no beach club, but a small cafe on the rocks overlooks the beach and cooks up great burgers. As with most of the small beaches on this list, it’s best to arrive early during the high season, or later in the day when it’s much quieter.

Illetas

Within easy reach of Palma, Illetas has all the beauty of a small cove (picture soft sand and calm turquoise waters), but with an abundance of facilities, too. Balneario Illetas beach club is situated at the back, with its upscale yet relaxed restaurant, sunbeds, and umbrellas for hire, plus a smaller beach bar serving drinks, snacks, and ice cream. Another restaurant offers shaded seating up on the rocks overlooking the sea, and around the corner is the more luxurious (and expensive) Purobeach. For those who don’t want to pay for sunbeds, there is plenty of golden sand to lie on.

Cala Agulla

Backed by sand dunes and pine forests and protected on two sides by a picturesque rock-lined coast, Cala Agulla is located on the easternmost tip of the island. There’s a real wild feel to the powder white sand and clear waters here, but it’s still within easy reach of the popular resort town of Cala Ratjada. There are also a few facilities, including loungers for hire and some water sports, plus nearby rocky zones make for some great snorkeling.

The Best Things to Do in Mallorca

What to Do in Mallorca for Families

When it comes to family-friendly destinations, Mallorca is hard to beat. The most obvious place to keep the little ones entertained is at the beach, and the island has plenty of sandy stretches for small bathers. The long coves that dot the southwest coast are particularly calm and sheltered, with shallow entry points and fine golden sand. Most of the popular beaches will have pedal boats for hire — perfect family fun.

Water-centric fun also comes in the form of several excellent water parks located around the island, just outside the resorts of Magaluf, El Arenal, and Alcúdia. There’s also an inflatable sea-based water park that makes an appearance during the summer in Port de Pollença. Katmandu Park, Mallorca’s biggest theme park, is brimming with activities for all ages. For something a little more educational, try La Granja, situated just outside the town of Esporles. This country-estate-turned-museum offers fascinating insight into the island’s history plus farm animals.

What to Do in Mallorca for Couples

Mallorca is certainly a popular destination for weddings, honeymoons, and romantic breaks of all kinds. For starters, there are plenty of adults-only hotels that cater to couples, from remote fincas in the scenic countryside to luxurious spa hotels with stunning sea views. If hitting the water is your idea of romance, there are numerous charter companies around the island where you can hire a boat for a half-day, full day, or longer — and many don’t require a license. This is one way to find that secluded spot and spend some quality time with your sweetheart. Alternatively, doe-eyed lovers can hop in a hot-air balloon to enjoy stunning mountain and sea panoramas while gliding across the island at sunset — a perfect setting for popping the question.

What to Do in Mallorca for Solo Travelers

While so much of the vacation experience can be geared toward non-singles, Mallorca provides plenty of activities for those traveling alone. Yoga has always been popular on the island, and today, there are numerous retreats where you can find your inner peace. Most of these take place in grand villas nestled among verdant valleys and mountains. If you’re seeking even more solitude, it’s easy to find some alone time on the cycling or hiking trails of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range.

What to Do in Mallorca for Thrill-Seekers

With so much mountainous terrain, Mallorca has established itself as one of the top rock-climbing destinations in Europe. For those wanting to pursue water-centric activities, the cliffs along the eastern coast are perfect for deep-water soloing. Another popular activity among adrenaline junkies is cliff jumping, which is usually combined with coasteering and abseiling, and should only be practiced with a professional guide.

What to Do in Mallorca for Partiers

While the island has been pushing to clean up its party-heavy image, there’s still no shortage of nightlife, especially once summer kicks off. Magaluf’s infamous Punta Ballena strip is the central party zone on Mallorca’s southwest coast. Young (mostly British) revelers spill out from its many neon-lit bars and high-energy clubs. There are, however, many more sophisticated places to party, including several beach clubs that have adopted the more chic Ibiza-style vibe. Examples include Purobeach (Palma and Illetas), Nikki Beach, and Anima Beach Club — all within easy reach of the capital. Palma itself has its fair share of party potential — the best place for a bar crawl is along the marina-front Paseo Marítimo. The capital’s hip Santa Catalina neighborhood also attracts a good amount of nighttime revelry.

Essential Things to Know Before Your First Mallorca Vacation

The First Language in Mallorca is Not Spanish

While Spanish (or Castilian) is spoken by all locals in Mallorca, most grow up speaking Mallorquín (a Catalan dialect) as their first language. Most official correspondence and signage will also be in the native tongue. English and German are widely spoken as well, especially in tourist areas, though a ‘gracias’ or ‘gràcis’ is always appreciated.

The Water in Mallorca Is Not Drinkable

Like most islands in the Mediterranean, dinking tap water in the Balearics is not recommended. While it’s perfectly safe to use for things like cooking and brushing teeth, its high mineral and chorine content means it tastes unpleasant and could cause an upset stomach if too much is consumed.

A Rental Car is the Best Way to Get Around Mallorca

While Mallorca does have a modern and fairly efficient transportation network that covers most of the island, timetables are frequently disrupted and buses can suffer from overcrowding during peak times. There are metro and train lines, but their reach is limited to the interior part of the island. For those hoping to explore the island, a hire car is recommended and can be relatively cheap in the low season from the airport.

Tipping in Mallorca Is Not Required

While servers in bars and restaurants certainly appreciate a little something extra, it is far from expected, and there are certainly no hard and fast rules about tipping in Mallorca. Rounding up or leaving change is common among locals, but a fixed service charge is rarely added to checks.

Local Festivals in Mallorca Are Worth Checking Out

During certain times of the year, it can feel like there’s a festival every weekend, and you should absolutely take advantage and attend. From huge mock battles between Christians and Moors to fire-fueled festivities that go on all night, be sure to check the calendar in advance for festivities happening near your hotel.

There’s More to Mallorca Beyond Its Beaches

Mallorca might be best known as a beach destination, but there is a lot more to the island. The UNESCO-protected Serra de Tramuntana is a 56-mile pine-clad mountain range that runs along the northern coast, offering a great choice of non-beach activities, from gentle to extreme options.

Almost Everyone in Mallorca Has to Pay an Eco-Tax

The eco-tax (or sustainable tourism tax) is a levy that almost anyone staying on the island must pay. It was introduced in 2016 to boost funds directed toward conserving the environment and especially to offset the impact of tourism. How much you pay depends on the quality of your accommodations — up to four euros per night for luxury hotels, which can rack up over a couple of weeks.

The Best Hotels in Mallorca

Our Pick for the Best Luxury Hotel in Mallorca: Son Brull Hotel & Spa

Set at the foothills of the Tramuntana mountain range and overlooking Mallorca’s picturesque countryside, the location alone of this top-end spa hotel is rather special. But the converted 18th-century monastery has plenty more up its sleeve, including a rustic-meets-Scandinavian-chic style, deluxe spa facilities, and outstanding dining options. The top-quality in-room tech, whirlpool tubs, and Egyptian linens also come standard, ensuring this property lives up to its reputation as one of the best luxury hotels on the island.

Our Pick for the Best Boutique Hotel in Mallorca: Sant Francesc Hotel Singular

This swish boutique property has topped many lists of best hotels on the island — and it’s easy to see why. Located deep in Palma’s old town, and overlooking the eponymous church, it combines historical character with impeccable service and immaculate interiors. Glamorous rooms feature luxury-level amenities, including gourmet minibars and Bluetooth music systems. The on-site restaurant is considered one of the city’s finest, and a rooftop pool completes the impressive package.

Our Pick for the Best Family Hotel in Mallorca: Zafiro Palace Alcudia

Very few, if any, places on the island combine family-friendly and high-end facilities as well as Zafiro Palace Alcudia. This hotel caters almost exclusively to families with kids, but it features a sleek and contemporary vibe that is usually reserved for swanky, child-free properties. Three mini-clubs are tailored to various age groups, plus expect various pools, from pirate ship splash pools to serene adults-only options. Even entry-level Junior Suites are generous with space and amenities, while upgrades add direct pool access or whirlpool tubs.

Our Pick for a Beach Hotel in Mallorca: Hotel Nixe Palace

This landmark hotel exudes old-school glitz and glamour, and has a beachfront setting to boot. The Hotel Nixe Palace overlooks the broad sandy beach of Cala Major, only a five-minute drive from the capital. Cascading down toward the beach, numerous balustrade-lined terraces offer expansive views over the sea. Elegant guest rooms, heated indoor and outdoor pools, and top-notch dining round things out nicely.

1. Freehand Los Angeles

Everything about the Freehand Los Angeles is hip. It’s located in downtown L.A., inside the historic Commercial Exchange Building, and designers kept many of the building’s historic Art-Deco touches, such as a full-length neon sign. Inside, the interiors focus on providing an interesting social media backdrop and features are aimed at millennial tourists. Guests are encouraged to mingle everywhere from the communal basement to the stunning rooftop pool. The lobby hosts co-working spaces and happy hour deals. Guest accommodations — a mix of suites and shared rooms with bunks — are highly curated with art books and gourmet minibars.

2. Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles

LA Chapter at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles

The Ace Hotel was the very first hipster hotel to open in downtown Los Angeles, all the way back in 2014. It opened in the historic United Artists building in the Broadway Theater District, a trendy area with restaurants, and is within walking distance to the Staples Center. The hotel has an industrial-chic-meets-music theme. Many of the moody rooms feature Martin Guitars and Ace x Rega turntables, plus vinyl records. The rooftop bar is famous for industry events, and the adjacent pool provides stunning views. For food, it doesn’t get much cooler than Moon Juice’s cold-pressed juices and a retro-inspired outpost of Coffee Counter.

3. The Jeremy West Hollywood

Etcho Lobby Cafe at The Jeremy West Hollywood

Etcho Lobby Cafe at The Jeremy West Hollywood

The Jeremy West Hollywood is one of the coolest new hotels on the already-cool Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. The property certainly fits in with the neighborhood, but it also has a slight corporate vibe that brings a sense of order and service you might not find at other hip hotels. Chic, industrial rooms offer floor-to-ceiling windows and mid-century modern furnishings. Harriet’s Rooftop cocktail lounge and the elevated outdoor pool both offer endless views. Locally sourced art, a co-working space (with lots of outlets), and a plethora of Instagram-worthy gourmet meals were designed with millennials in mind.

4. The NoMad Hotel Los Angeles

Pool at The NoMad Hotel Los Angeles

The NoMad Hotel Los Angeles offers a winning combo of cool and class. The upscale hotel sits inside the former headquarters for the Bank of Italy, originally built in 1920. Today, the bank’s Italianate lobby ceiling (done in blue and gold) has been lovingly restored. It serves as design inspiration throughout the beautiful public spaces and rooms. When it comes to ambience, no expense has been spared — they even light the lobby with $65 French candles. The Restaurant, Coffee Bar, and Giannini Bar were each designed with Italian influences, and the rooftop swimming pool (with a fireplace and bar) is the place to see and be seen.

5. Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills

The Rooftop by JG at Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills

The Rooftop by JG at Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills

The Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills spent over $200 million and 10 years in an attempt to become Beverly Hill’s coolest celebrity hangout. The modern Art Deco showstopper has 119 rooms and 51 suites designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon. Each unit features a Crestron room control system, Diptyque and Ferragamo toiletries, and a private balcony with beautiful views of the hills and city. Guests are assigned a private concierge who is available 24 hours via text. Jean-Georges Beverly Hills serves gourmet food and provides 24-hour room service. Up on the 12th floor, The Rooftop by JG, offers a white pool deck and sweeping views of the Golden Triangle below.

6. Chateau Marmont

Chateau Marmont

This lauded celebrity hot spot has housed everyone from John Lennon to Britney Spears and seen its fair share of debauchery. Tourists can rent a hotel room and anyone can hang out at the bar, but if you want to be treated like a star, you need to actually be one. The rooms are a bit dowdy with standard carpets and vintage furnishings, but the kitchens are charming and the outdoor pool is serene. You never know what’s going to happen at Chateau Marmont — and that is very cool.

1. 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge

Lobby at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge/Oyster
Lobby at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge/Oyster

New York doesn’t have many hotels that serve as a proper social hub and an urban resort, and that exact combination is precisely what makes 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge so special. This luxury property sits on the East River in Brooklyn’s picture-perfect DUMBO neighborhood, offering awesome views of the Brooklyn Bridge and Lower Manhattan. Major perks include a rooftop bar and pool with jaw-dropping city views, plus free yoga classes, a great coffee shop, an upmarket new-American restaurant, a co-working space, and a beautiful spa. While the amenities here are serious, rooms shouldn’t be overlooked, as they’re some of the most spacious in New York. Even entry-level units feature banquettes and windowside seating plus king beds, Nespresso machines, and handsome bespoke touches.

2. The Ludlow

The Ludlow New York City/Oyster
The Mini Studio at The Ludlow/Oyster

The Lower East Side is a hip and artsy neighborhood, with top-notch nightlife venues, trendy shops, and delicious dining destinations. Much like the surrounding neighborhood, The Ludlow New York City plants itself at the crossroads of all things cool — and largely succeeds. The 175 rooms at this upscale property have an industrial-chic look plus amenities like Tivoli radios, down duvets, and copper details that add vintage charm. Some rooms have soaking tubs and sprawling terraces, though you’ll find many units to be on the cozy side. Downstairs, the scene at Dirty French — the hotel’s restaurant — is a destination in and of itself, while the adjacent Lobby Bar has a crackling fireplace and spills out onto a lovely garden courtyard.

3. MADE Hotel

The Standard Room at MADE/Oyster
The Standard Room at MADE/Oyster

Are cool local twists and refined bohemian style your thing? If so, head to Manhattan’s newly trendy NoMad neighborhood and grab a room at the MADE Hotel. The hipster trappings at this hotel run deep and include a great neighborhood coffee shop, an open co-working space, and — perhaps the hotel’s crown jewel — an intimate rooftop bar that hosts DJs and has great skyline views. All 108 rooms are tricked out in vintage brass, shabby-chic fabrics, and rough-hewn hardwood accents that create a picture-perfect — if incredibly compact — retreat in a busy part of town. Rainfall showers, king beds, local snacks and drinks, and great Bluetooth sound systems come standard as well. The hotel is also a good fit for business guests in town on a short stay and looking to sample something a bit more authentically New York than the typical Midtown options.

4. The Broome

Patio at The Broome/Oyster
Patio at The Broome/Oyster

The Broome is an elegant boutique hotel with just 16 rooms and suites, most of which are set around a beautiful courtyard. It also happens to have a prime address just one block off of Broadway, where SoHo begins its transition into hip Nolita. Each impeccably detailed room includes superb amenities like full minibars, iPads, bathrobes, slippers, and free fruit and Evian bottles. Other rare-in-New-York extras range from walk-in closets to bathrooms with full-size toiletries custom-made for the hotel. The Broome’s main feature is its tucked-away outdoor patio and straight-from-Paris cafe, where a gourmet breakfast (included in the rates) is served every morning. Otherwise, features are slim, but the location puts nightlife, dining, and shopping literally outside your door.

5. The Marlton Hotel

The Queen Room at The Marlton Hotel/Oyster
The Queen Room at The Marlton Hotel/Oyster

For Old-World style and some seriously impressive history, the classic Marlton Hotel is a great option. It even hosted the likes of Jack Kerouac back when Greenwich Village was a bohemian paradise. These days, the neighborhood is one of New York’s poshest, though the hotel still maintains its signature charm. The location is prime for checking out the Village’s cafes, bars, restaurants, and boutiques, and both Washington Square Park and NYU are just a few minutes away by foot. Rooms are cute and compact, with rainfall showers, flat-screen TVs, and bathrobes. Downstairs, the lobby lounge is a great place for cocktails and coffee, and it stays busy from morning until night with locals and guests alike. There’s also a delicious French-Mediterranean restaurant. Added bonus? All rooms include breakfast with fresh-squeezed juice and coffee.

6. Freehand

Lobby at Freehand New York Hotel/Oyster
Lobby at Freehand New York Hotel/Oyster

Unapologetically hip, the Freehand New York marks this brand’s first foray into New York City. While it’s a bit larger than typical boutique hotels, the style and vibe here are tapped into a scene that’s so cool you didn’t even know it was trendy yet. The property is overloaded with millennial features like three buzzy restaurants, two bars, and a lounge that’s usually packed with locals on laptops. The rooms are also configured with young travelers in mind — guests can choose from Bunk and Three’s Company units with bunk beds in addition to more traditional room layouts. Even so, the atmosphere here is the main draw, with nightlife bleeding into the morning hours, as travelers and locals hit up the hotel’s bars. Playful social get-togethers, like tarot readings or nude drawing classes, add even more cool to this hipster-packed property.

7. PUBLIC

Entrance at PUBLIC/Oyster
Entrance at PUBLIC/Oyster

Also a bit larger than a typical boutique hotel, the PUBLIC‘s design-savvy interiors are enough to merit inclusion on this list. When you add the prime location amid the Lower East Side’s boutiques, restaurants, and bars, it’s hard to argue with this hotel’s coolness credentials. Designed by Ian Schrager — of Studio 54 fame — interiors here beg to be photographed, and the hotel mostly draws a younger set. The small rooms are equally smart when it comes to design and include floor-to-ceiling windows and perks like Bose speakers. There’s also a 24-hour gym plus a number of destination dining and drinking spots on-site. The views from the rooftop bar alone are worth checking into the hotel, while the restaurant by Jean-Georges Vongerichten draws plenty of locals and tourists alike.

8. The William Vale

The William Vale/Oyster
The William Vale/Oyster

While it commands a large presence near Williamsburg’s East River waterfront, the luxe William Vale has only 183 rooms, making its massive set of features all the more surprising. Those extras aside, the views of Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn throughout the hotel are a major draw and can be had from the popular rooftop bar. The Italian eatery Leuca receives excellent reviews, and the outdoor pool with food service is a rarity in New York City. Rooms are perfect for Williamsburg (with a splash of South Beach in the decor) and are outfitted with eye-catching local art plus amenities like flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, L’Occitane toiletries, and furnished balconies.

9. 11 Howard

The King Room/Oyster
The King Room/Oyster

With one of the best addresses in the city — right at the intersection of SoHo, Nolita, and Chinatown — 11 Howard does minimalism right. The decor and overall vibe are impeccably hip without the pretense you might find at other on-trend Manhattan hotels. We love the chic decor, as well as extras including coworking space and an intimate bar, The Blond. Rooms are mostly spacious for Lower Manhattan, with towering windows that only add to the bright interiors. The bathrooms, with marble and brass details, come stocked with high-end products, while amenities like digital concierges, Bluetooth speakers, bespoke minibars, and 48-inch Smart TVs are standard. Did we mention the beds? They’re easily some of the most comfortable in the city, particularly for those who prefer a softer night’s sleep.

Traveling? Consider the Carry-On from Away

Built to be the last carry-on you’ll ever have to purchase, this Away bag has a USB charging port, 360 degree spinning wheels, a hard exterior shell, and a TSA-approved lock.

1. Astra Suites

Picture whitewashed walls beaming against rugged volcanic rocks. Add the Aegean Sea below and a piercing blue sky above. Mix in modern suites with large private terraces (some with pools). It’s this marriage (pun intended) of upscale amenities and a stunning setting — away from the hustle and bustle of town — that make Astra Suites a solid pick for couples. Seat yourself at the gourmet restaurant serving contemporary Greek fare or in the heated outdoor infinity pool — a blue oasis overlooking the sea. But first, raise a glass to your union with the free welcome bottle of Santorini wine.

2. Andronis Luxury Suites

Santorini is synonymous with stunning cliffside hotels — and the 22-room Andronis Luxury Suites is no exception. Unlike many other properties, however, this one also offers fast access to the village of Oia. Explore the shops and restaurants in town, then return to hotel’s restaurant for some tasty Greek grub. Quintessential Cycladic architecture (whitewashed walls, steep stone steps), suites with private hot tubs (and some with private pools), and an infinity pool also await. It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful place to celebrate your nuptials, but it gets better: Children under the age of 13 aren’t allowed here, so honeymooners don’t have to worry about screaming kids killing the mood.

3. Canaves Oia Hotel

Is Canaves Oia Hotel the most romantic property on Santorini? You decide: Taking full advantage of its privileged position on top of Oia’s steep hillside, the hotel grants front-row seats to the breathtaking Aegean Sea below. Plus, the pool here is one of the largest on the island, the wine cellar hosts regular tastings, the suites feature private terraces with seating and stunning views, and the open-air dining area draws guests looking to linger over a meal while enjoying the sea breeze. In-room spa treatments are also available — just what you need to unwind after a whirlwind wedding

4. Andronis Boutique Hotel

There’s romance to be found in every corner of the 14-room Andronis Boutique Hotel, from the kidney-shaped pool overlooking the crystal-blue Aegean to the cave-like quarters with private balconies, hot tubs, and spectacular sea views (some even have private infinity pools). Toast to new beginnings at the large domed bar specializing in Greek wines, or at the open-air restaurant doling out traditional Greek cooking.

5. Lilium Villas Santorini

Overlooking the Aegean Sea, this boutique luxury hotel cranks up the romance factor.  A gorgeous swimming pool and sun deck promise memorable moments, while the on-site spa is perfect antidote to the stress of wedding planning. The spacious rooms and black-and-white lounge and bar overlooking the water are sure impress, too, but the sunset views steal the show. Just keep in mind that a car or shuttle is necessary for exploring the rest of the island, as the hotel is a bit off the beaten path (a shuttle service to the town of Fira is included in the rate, as is parking and breakfast.)

6. Pezoules

It’s tough not to fall in love with and in Pezoules, a six-room knockout set a few steps from Oia. Set up for beautiful views along the lower caldera cliffs, the property is small and quiet — save for a few people and donkeys — making it a prime option for honeymooners seeking solitude. Many of the rooms sport that Instagram-worthy Santorini style (think cave-like accommodations with whitewashed walls), though it’s the picture-perfect infinity pool that will keep the spark alive.

7. Aenaon Villas

Daydreams of a perfect honeymoon might summon images of sunny days, romantic evenings, and pampering amenities. Aenaon Villas, comprised of seven luxury villas, offers it all and then some. You can expect to find an obligatory infinity pool overlooking the sea, plus a traditional Cycladic design, including a gleaming white exterior. However, the property goes one step further by delivering both butler and room service (there’s no restaurant or bar on-site), as well as in-villa massage treatments upon request. Rooms come with fireplaces, private verandas, and other high-end details, and no kids under 12 are permitted — only elevating an already upscale experience.

8. Astarte Suites

Swarovski crystals above the in-suite hot tubs, gold mosaic tiling in the Honeymoon Suite bathroom, and multiple chartering services (private jets, yachts, helicopters, and sailboats) – this 11-room boutique luxury hotel is designed to turn heads. Also vying for attention are the infinity pool, hot tub, excellent on-site restaurant serving Mediterranean fare, and high-end perks like in-room massages and Champagne and fruit on arrival. Arguably the most show-stopping feature, however, is the sunset views.

9. Anastasis Apartments

Located along the Imerovigli cliffs, Anastasis Apartments has many of the same trimmings of other Santorini hotels — iconic Cycladic architecture, a lovely infinity pool with out-of-this-world views, and 11 large apartments with private balconies and kitchenettes. However, it stands out for what it lacks: steep steps, making it great for anyone with mobility issues. Bonus: It’s within walking distance of bars and restaurants, but leave time to soak in the property, including the romantic cave-like spa.

1. Elizabeth Unique Hotel

Lobby at Elizabeth Unique Hotel/Oyster

Can a hotel have classic Roman appeal while still embracing a contemporary design and modern features? If the Elizabeth Unique Hotel has anything to say about it, the answer is yes. This cool little property feels like staying in a polished, upscale home — albeit one with an impeccable art collection. You’ll find original pieces in every room, as well as the hotel’s lobby lounge and restaurant, all for sale and curated by local Galleria Russo. It’s not only about style here, though, as rooms are tricked out with substantial extras like Bose speaker pods, digital concierges, free minibars, and even double rainfall showers in some categories. The location, just off buzzing Via del Corso and only a five-minute walk from the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo, is also a major plus.

2. Casa Fabbrini Boutique B&B

Casa Fabbrini Boutique B&B/Oyster

Casa Fabbrini Boutique B&B/Oyster

In a city that’s busy almost without pause, it’s refreshing to find spots that still feel hidden from the madness. While only a five-minute walk from the Spanish Steps and just a block from Via del Corso, Casa Fabbrini Boutique B&B sits along a dead-end alley that feels tucked away from the tourists. This means you can expect plenty of peace and quiet, which only amplifies the posh, homey vibe at this tiny four-room property. Centuries-old interiors have been given a boho makeover, with reclaimed hardware and funky retro furniture offset by neutral tones and soothing colors throughout. The memory foam beds are some of the best we’ve found in Rome, but it’s the kitchen here that’s the star of the show. The hotel’s managers are busy cooking cakes and cookies all day long and the enticing aroma fills the property. These can be snacked on day and night, and are featured in the generous communal breakfast spread in the morning as well.

3. Hotel Vilon

Room at Hotel Vilon/Oyster

Room at Hotel Vilon/Oyster

Opened in 2018, Hotel Vilon is easily one of Rome’s most stylish boutique hotels. The design is so impressive that the hotel feels far larger than it actually is (only 19 rooms in all). Once a convent and then a school for disadvantaged women, the hotel has plenty of history and abuts the opulent Borghese Palace. Interiors are anything but old-school, though — expect stunning contemporary artwork and curated Art Deco details. This same ethos extends to the rooms, where you’ll find much more space than at most central Rome hotels. Marble bathrooms and Bluetooth sound systems — plus balconies with Borghese Palace garden views in some rooms — are just a few of the perks you’ll also score. The lounge is easily one of Rome’s best places for an afternoon coffee or aperitivo. The attention to detail here ranges from the china chosen for espresso service to books decoding Italian hand gestures.

4. Margutta 19

Deluxe Room at Margutta 19/Oyster

Deluxe Room at Margutta 19/Oyster

For luxury living in a chic boutique package, Margutta 19 is one of the best options in town. Opened in 2018, the hotel has fresh appeal, with a sharp mix of contemporary design details and Art Nouveau accents. The suites, which feature separate living rooms, are the best choice here; some even have balconies. However, all rooms come with numerous high-end perks, like biscotti on arrival, free bespoke snacks and soft drinks, Frette linens and down comforters, and espresso machines. Bathrooms are tricked out in marble and include Molton Brown bath products. One of the property’s best assets is its location on Via Margutta, an incredibly pretty street in central Rome. Neighbors include indie art galleries and boutiques, plus plenty of cute cafes.

5. Casacau

Corner Apartment at Casacau/Oyster

In a city where it’s hard not to feel like a tourist, finding a boutique hotel that’s a proper home away from home can be challenging. Cascau is that rare place that simultaneously encourages you to embrace your touristy side as well as your desire to live like a local. The loft-inspired apartments feature a boho-chic style that blends classic, industrial, minimalist, and maximalist design trends. They also include extras like local coffee, kitchens, spa bathrooms in many cases (one unit has a sauna), and bags of local bread and pastries delivered fresh to your door every morning. While the hotel is just a block and a half from the mobbed Trevi Fountain, apartments stay silent at night. That’s no small feat in this part of Rome.

6. DOM Hotel

Bar at DOM Hotel/Oyster

Bar at DOM Hotel/Oyster

Something of a trendy destination for locals and tourists alike, the DOM Hotel is perhaps best known locally for its rooftop scene. Here, an aperitivo is an event that draws revelers from around the posh Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona areas. Dinner service is also available on the rooftop, which boasts beautiful city views. Rooms are austere and sharp, with beautifully preserved historic details in some. Opt for rooms on the second and third floors for soaring ceilings and accents like exposed wood beams, whitewashed brick, and frescos. It’s an incredibly quiet part of the city, and remnants of the ancient monastery that was once the hotel’s home can be found throughout. We particularly loved the tiles on the second floor, which were purchased by donors who supported the monastery.

7. Palazzo Dama Hotel

Pool at Palazzo Dama/Oyster

Pool at Palazzo Dama/Oyster

A boutique hotel in a former 19th-century palace set in the heart of Rome? Yes, it’s true — such things do exist. Palazzo Dama is equal parts youthful see-and-be-seen destination and refined escape, depending on what day of the week you’re visiting. Post up here Sunday through Thursday, and the gorgeous Art Deco interiors, chic pisco bar and Peruvian restaurant, and lovely pool all make for peaceful and amenity-packed places to unwind. Pass through on a Friday or Saturday, though, and you’re likely to find locals and tourists queueing up for the hotel’s lively nightclub. Either way, the package is undeniably pretty — simultaneously vintage and contemporary. It’s easily one of the most photogenic hotels in Rome right now.

8. Boutique Hotel Campo de' Fiori

Terrace at Boutique Hotel Campo de’ Fiori/Oyster

Is Boutique Hotel Campo de’ Fiori a new addition to the hotel scene in Rome? Not at all. Does it deserve plenty of attention? Absolutely. While we recommend seeking out one of the concierges here to get the whole story behind the hotel and Campo de’ Fiori area, there are lots of cool secrets at this LGBTQ-friendly property. That starts with the hotel’s origins as a former bordello for priests until the 18th century, as well as the resident ghost of Lucrezia Borgia who reportedly haunts Room 601. Interiors are classic and romantic, dripping with baroque style, though the rooftop may just top everything else on offer. Here, you’ll find intimate seating areas with 360-degree views of nearly all of Rome.

9. The H'All Tailor Suite

The Standard Room at The H'All Tailor Suite/Oyster

The Standard Room at The H’All Tailor Suite/Oyster

Once a posh villa, The H’All Tailor Suite is now a funky upscale hotel in Rome’s low-key Flaminio district, just north of Piazza del Popolo. The art collection here makes a bold statement. Pieces include everything from moody photographs to a bubblegum-pink life-size gorilla, though there are classic touches, too. Sleek canopy beds, chevron parquet flooring, and — in suites — spa-worthy bathrooms with two-person tubs all up the high-end ante. However, it’s the hotel’s restaurant — All’Oro — that steals the show. Reservations are a must at this Michelin-starred spot, where traditional Italian fare is spun into dramatically plated dishes in the show kitchen at the center of the dining area. Those staying at the hotel can get a free sneak peak of the dishes on offer during breakfast. Consisting of a flurry of small plates, guests can have a sweet or savory meal (or a combination of both) to start their day.

10. Hotel degli Artisti

Roof Terrace at Hotel degli Artisti/Oyster

Roof Terrace at Hotel degli Artisti/Oyster

Not all of Rome’s best boutique hotels have luxury-level price tags. Hotel degli Artisti offers plenty of value relative to its small size and simple style. The fresh property has classic interiors that are amped up by cool modern art. Rooms are clean and cozy, with smart TVs and — in some — views of the church gardens across the street. Like the DOM Hotel, it’s the rooftop here that’s the biggest draw. Aperitivo hour is perfect for watching the sun go down over Piazza Venezia in the distance. There’s also a rooftop hot tub that’s free for guests (and is exceedingly rare in central Rome). The hotel sits in one of Rome’s quietest corners, yet is only a 10-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain and even closer to the Spanish Steps.

1. Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong

Kerry Hotel/Kyle Valenta

Kerry Hotel/Kyle Valenta

While Hong Kong isn’t lacking luxury hotels, it doesn’t exactly have a wealth of urban resorts. That makes the Kerry Hotel a rare exception in this busy city. With interiors by Andre Fu (who also designed The Upper House), the hotel is equally relaxing and lively, with spaces that allow guests to have either or both in equal measure. That starts with outdoor lounge space and a pool that sits over Victoria Harbour, and ends with venues like the Dockyard and Red Sugar, where happy hours buzz with locals every night of the week. There’s also a full gym and a luxe spa on the property. Rooms are some of the biggest in the city, and the best have uninterrupted views across Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong Island.

2. The Putman

The Putman/Oyster

The Putman/Oyster

The Putman provides an upscale, exclusive stay in one of Hong Kong’s trendiest neighborhoods. It also gives travelers a glimpse into living like a local — albeit one who can afford a massive apartment in a city where space comes at a premium. The suites here are some of the best values that you’ll find, and they span the entire width of the building, with separate dining, living, and sleeping areas, plus gorgeous bathrooms that include rainfall showers and soaking tubs. The wall of windows in each suite offers incredible city views, particularly from higher floors. Plus, each suite has its own private entrance directly from the elevator. It’s an exclusive spot, making rates often seem like a bargain.

3. The Upper House

The Upper House/Oyster

The Upper House/Oyster

Perched on a hill, The Upper House is one of the most well-known luxury hotels in Hong Kong. It’s easy to see why upon stepping inside, where stunning architecture complements a wide array luxury services and a beautiful contemporary art collection. The rooms are massive, and all have amazing city views. Make sure to look up, down, and all around as you make your way through the hotel, as nearly every corner is a set piece of stunning interior design. And when you’re ready to unwind, a cocktail at Cafe Gray Deluxe or an Art Basel event in The Library make a fine way to end the day. Want something more relaxing? Opt for a bath in the spa-inspired bathrooms in your room, complete with dizzying city views in Upper Suites.

4. The Fleming, Hong Kong

The Fleming/Oyster

The Fleming/Oyster

With only 66 rooms, The Fleming is an intimate boutique hotel that goes big on style. Interiors blend vintage decor and contemporary design, all based on the Star Ferry ships of yore, which still ply Victoria Harbour today (albeit in more modern form). The attention to detail at this new Wan Chai property is epic, with brass sinks, apothecary-inspired bathrooms, goose-down comforters, leather blackout curtains, and a mix of hardwood details and sober hues that create sexy, intimate spaces. Italian fare at the on-site eatery, Osteria Marzia, also draws a lively mix of locals and travelers, adding to the Instagram-worthy atmosphere.

5. 99 Bonham

99 Bonham/Oyster

99 Bonham/Oyster

While you won’t find an endless list of features here, 99 Bonham is a great pick for independent travelers who want to base themselves in trendy Sheung Wan. It also has jaw-dropping city views, particularly from Deluxe Suites, which come with dual-aspect windows. Sipping a coffee from the Nespresso machines found in every room and posting up next to the floor-to-ceiling windows is a hard experience to top in this city of vertigo-inducing views. We also love the sleek and simple minimalist decor. Plus, just outside of the hotel’s front door is one of Hong Kong’s coolest neighborhoods, Sheung Wan, where trendy restaurants and cafes sit side-by-side with historic sites like Man Mo Temple and Antique Street.

Catcha Falling Star

Aerial View of Catcha Falling Star/Oyster

The hand-painted street sign and magenta bougainvillea vines should clue you in that something magical awaits beyond this hotel’s sea-green gated entrance. Once inside, Catcha Falling Star‘s maze-like paths, encircled in lush greenery, bright flowers, and wooden arbors, unfurl toward the seaside cliffs. Tiered sun-lounging terraces, thatch-roofed seating nooks, and spacious verandas with hammocks and daybeds all capitalize on the resort’s mesmerizing views and clifftop location. The stunning scenery, grown-up vibe, high-quality local food, and intimate boutique experience are similar to what you’ll find at Jamaica’s famous (and far more expensive) SPA Retreat Boutique Hotel and The Caves.

Jakes Hotel, Villas & Spa

Aerial View of Jakes Hotel, Villas & Spa/Oyster

Aerial View of Jakes Hotel, Villas & Spa/Oyster

After the hours-long, pothole-ridden journey to remote Treasure Beach on Jamaica’s south coast, Jakes Hotel, Villas & Spa immediately introduces itself as an eccentric and easygoing gem that was worth the trip. Stepping inside feels like entering a quirky artist utopia in the height of the Summer of Love. Meandering stone and tile mosaic pathways connect the cheerful and rustic guest cottages — no two the same — that are sprawled along the jagged coastline. In truth, the whole resort is built along the water’s edge, with open-air spa treatment rooms perched right next to the sea and a yoga studio with 180-degree ocean views. The restaurant serves a rotating menu of Jamaican dishes (curry goat, broad bean stew) with an emphasis on produce from local farms. A shady canopy of lantern-strewn tree branches arches over the romantic outdoor dining area, bar, and enchanting saltwater pool — all with sea views. On-site yoga, art, and cooking classes are available.

Nirvana on the Beach

Beach at Nirvana on the Beach/Oyster

Beach at Nirvana on the Beach/Oyster

The tiny, 12-room Nirvana on the Beach is a hotel that’s true to its word: the intimate boutique is, indeed, right on Negril‘s Seven Mile Beach. In fact, Nirvana has a private beach area, which it sets up with hammocks, loungers, chairs, and loaner kayaks. Of Nirvana’s dozen rooms, the cottages and studios provide the best value. Cottages are especially charming, with screened-in sitting areas, private bedrooms, and full kitchens. The hotel lacks a pool, restaurant, and bar, but reception can help arrange local activities such as scuba diving, cliff jumping, and snorkeling. Drivers are available for tours, grocery shopping, and transportation around Negril.

Banana Shout Resort

The Tree House Cottage at Banana Shout Resort/Oyster

The Tree House Cottage at Banana Shout Resort/Oyster

Consisting of four freestanding cabins, wild-feeling gardens, and lounging terraces carved out of sea cliffs, the kooky-casual Banana Shout Resort is small, but memorable. Local art, tie-dyed fabrics, and Bob Marley posters or paintings adorn the perkily painted cottages. All have simple furnishings, kitchenettes, and front porches with ocean views. The thatched-roof restaurant hut doesn’t have a set menu; instead, meals are cooked to order based on guests’ preferences. Food can be delivered to the cottages, the garden, or anywhere on the property. Deep-sea fishing and glass-bottom boat rides are offered through the resort, at an additional cost, and a bus driver is available to take guests on tours of local sights.

Country Country Beach Cottages

Beach at Country Country Beach Cottages/Oyster

Beach at Country Country Beach Cottages/Oyster

Country Country Beach Cottages is a low-key and locally owned cottage resort located on a private section of Negril’s Seven Mile Beach. Its 20 private, pastel-colored cottages are big on local charm, with shuttered doors and windows, folksy wooden furnishings (including daybeds or sofas), and private porches or balconies. All have mini-fridges, coffee and tea facilities, and air-conditioning — which is not a given at the hotels on this list. The hotel’s famous banana pancakes are included in the free breakfast, which is served at Country Peppa Grille. The open-air beachfront restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner, when it serves traditional jerk and surf-and-turf.

Westender Inn

Grounds of Westender Inn/Oyster

Grounds of Westender Inn/Oyster

Set way back in Negril’s West End, Westender Inn is a secluded boutique where the rocky cliffside views are the main draw. An extra bonus is the small patch of sandy beach — a rare geographical feature in limestone-ridged West End. Swimming can be a risky endeavor here, as the water is full of sharp coral and the waves can get rough. Nevertheless, on a calm day, guests can grab free snorkeling equipment and explore the underwater world, including the hotel’s coral reef restoration project. Loungers are lined up under straw umbrellas around the oceanfront cliff terraces and on the small beach area, which has an adjacent saltwater dipping pool. A tiki-style beachside bar serves drinks throughout the day, and an all-day restaurant/bar overlooking the cliffs serves largely Jamaican fare. Note that the property is split by a rocky road, with sea-view rooms and suites on the ocean side and spacious garden cottages in the far section.

Negril Tree House Resort

View from Two-Bedroom Suite at Negril Tree House Resort/Oyster

View from Two-Bedroom Suite at Negril Tree House Resort/Oyster

A hotel with a near 100-percent approval rating from past guests is a very rare thing. Negril Tree House Resort comes pretty close, with former visitors (many longtime loyalists) regularly praising its welcoming owner, its chef, and its excellent spot on beautiful Seven Mile Beach. Rates are fair and include a generous breakfast buffet with waffle and omelette stations, plus callaloo veggies, fried dumplings, salt fish, and homemade cakes. At the beach bar and grill, guests can order freshly grilled seafood, curried goat, and jerk chicken a la carte for lunch and dinner. The 70 rooms and suites are basic, but all include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and semi-private balconies. Families should consider booking the two-bedroom suite for extra space, a kitchenette, and two bathrooms.
