Mexico is as popular a travel destination as ever, with 38.3 million people visiting in 2023. While beach towns like Sayulita, Tulum, and Playa Espiritu are coming into their own, Cancún and Los Cabos are still major tourist draws. The two destinations emerged in the ’60s and ’70s, respectively, when the Mexican government discovered their potential in a search for tourism development. Today, both offer ample hotels, beaches, activities, spas, and nightlife options — yet they each have their own unique strengths. So which one is right for you? To compare, we matched the two destinations in the following categories: getting there and around, beaches, activities, dining, nightlife, accommodations, cost and safety. Check them out and make your pick.

Traveling to Cancún and Los Cabos

Los Cabos: Los Cabos (nicknamed Lands End) is on the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula on the western coast of Mexico, making it easier to get to for those living on the west coast. The name, which means “Two Capes,” combines the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, about 35 minutes apart by car — with several beaches in between. There are taxis and a local bus system, but many choose to explore the region with a car. Don’t be alarmed if the car rental company explains where the spare tire and tools are — roads in certain parts of Baja can be rough, but they are safe for tourists, with plenty of police presence and several security checkpoints.

Cancún: Cancún, for its part, is located on the eastern part of Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula, which faces the Caribbean Sea, so its geographical position makes it an easy jaunt for those who live in the Midwest and East Coast. The actual city of Cancún — 12.5 miles from the center of the Hotel Zone — is part of the ancient Mayan civilization and is considered the gateway to El Mundo Maya (the Mayan World), so there are plenty of day-trip options that can be arranged with tour groups. The Yucatan also has a local bus system for adventurous types, and — like Los Cabos — some choose to rent a car so they can have the freedom to explore.

Beaches in Los Cabos and Cancún

Cancún: Both locations will not disappoint in terms of beaches and views. Situated at Yucatan’s corner where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico, Cancún boasts warm, clear, turquoise water — the kind that people tend to fantasize about when planning a tropical vacation. The Hotel Zone (with over 100 hotels, it’s where most people stay) is a lengthy 14-mile strip of fine white sand shaped like a number 7, allowing for water sports, sunbathing, swimming, and long walks along the shore.

Los Cabos: While Cancún is flat, Los Cabos is surprisingly mountainous with a rugged desert landscape and rock formations, especially photogenic El Arco, visible from many hotels near Cabo San Lucas. Though Cancún has turquoise water, no one will balk at the deep blue tone of the sparkling Sea of Cortez, especially from a higher altitude where mountainous roads allow for some gorgeous views. Cabo is also sunnier and drier (and less humid) than Cancún, with less than 10 inches of rain per year (much of it in September and early October). There are not as many swimming beaches in Cabo due to powerful undertows that make them too dangerous, but locals know plenty of safe spots for water sports, and even some that are ideal for surfing. For safe swimming conditions, check out our list of the best swimmable beaches in Cabo.

Activities in Cancún and Los Cabos

Like with any beach destination, typical resort activities can be expected at both destinations in the way of championship golf resorts, spa treatments, water sports, and tourist excursions — but what sets these two locations apart from each other?

Los Cabos: Los Cabos has the benefit of land: the mountains of Sierra de la Laguna, Cabo Pulmo National Park, Cañon de la Zorra (Fox Canyon), ATV trails through the desert, hiking Mount Solmar, and exploring the charming and historic town center of San Jose del Cabo (far less touristy than Cabo San Lucas). The area also has one of the largest marlin fishing tournament in the world, and in winter, blue whales bear their calves in the warm waters of the Gulf of California after completing their migration from Alaska (keep the camera close and listen for the ringing of the bell during whale sightings). The area also offers unique dive sites like Sand Falls, an underwater waterfall of cascades leading to a 1,200-foot canyon below. Snorkelers for their part can drive up to Baja’s capital, La Paz, and swim with whale sharks — gentle giants that can get as big as 40 feet. For more itinerary inspiration, check out our list of the coolest things to do in Los Cabos.

Cancún: Meanwhile Cancún has better shopping with upscale malls like La Isla and Luxury Avenue. Popular day-trips include Isla Mujeres, located eight miles off the coast, Cozumel, and Chichen Itza, once the capital city of the Mayan civilization — two hours west of Cancún. There’s also a small set of Mayan buildings right downtown in Cancún. Two hours south of Cancún is the trendy town of Tulum, where centuries-old temples are built right along the shore. The Caribbean Sea offers coral reefs for snorkeling and scuba diving, including the island of Cozumel, and cenotes, a big sinkhole filled with freshwater and fish. Kids can play with spider monkeys at The Jungle Place sanctuary. For more itinerary inspiration, check out our list of the best Cancún excursions as well as the most unexpected day trips from Cancún.

Food in Cancún and Los Cabos

Los Cabos: Mainstream travelers can find plenty of touristy spots in downtown Cabo San Lucas, while those seeking authenticity should head for San Jose del Cabo. Either way, with a car, it leaves a lot more freedom to explore. A few examples worth the drive include Flora’s Field Kitchen — part of a gorgeous 10-acre organic farm in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains (and definitely worth the rough roads to get here). Also within driving distance is Los Tamarindos, a working, organic farm that grows lemongrass, artichokes, and other fruits and veggies (cooking classes are available).

Other notable restaurants include Pitahayas Restaurant, part of Hacienda Vacation Club, Seven Seas Seafood Grille at Cabo Surf Hotel, and Sunset MonaLisa, annually ranked as one of the most romantic restaurants in the world, popular for proposals and wedding ceremonies.

Cancún: Cancún, for its part, tends to offer more all-inclusive environments, and most resorts include breakfast and lunch buffets at least. Due to this, most local restaurants open for lunch around 2 p.m. and stay open until midnight. For those who like to venture out, several types of cuisine can be found in and around the Hotel Zone, but there are only a few oceanfront restaurants; instead, those who want views can dine at the waterfront restaurants facing Nichupte Lagoon for beautiful sunsets. As for downtown Cancún (a taxi ride away), there are a range of Mexican restaurants, as well as fresh seafood and international cuisine types.

Nightlife in Cancún and Los Cabos

Cancún: When most people think of Cancún, they picture yard beers, foam parties, and wet t-shirt contests — and rightly so since this has been a spring break destination for over 20 years. Perhaps this is place to avoid during March and April if crowds of partiers make you cringe. The partying does tame down after April, but Cancún will always be associated with nightlife and the hot spots get steady crowds all year long — pulling in ages from 18 (legal drinking age in Mexico) to mid-50s and up.

Nightclubs tend to sell open-bar bracelets, which allows everyone to pay one price to enter the club and drink all night, while bottle service, for an extra fee, is encouraged. Cancún also offers bar hopping tours, which bring visitors to several nightclubs in one night. Cabo San Lucas is also known for a spring break crowd and the tourist hub suffers no shortage of people walking around with beer, late-night dance clubs, biker bars, and rock music venues. Check out our list of the best nightclubs and bars in Cancún, which include notable venues like Coco Bongo, Senor Frogs, Mandala, and even some on-property spots.

Los Cabos: Those looking to escape the rowdiness can head to peaceful San Jose del Cabo, which offers the look and vibe of an authentic Mexican town; picture cobblestone streets and beautiful colonial architecture in the main square. Tucked on narrow streets are cozy wineries, rooftop bars, and Spanish guitarists playing acoustic shows. Another romantic spot is the champagne lounge set on a cliff: El Farallón at The Resort at Pedregal.

Accommodations in Los Cabos and Cancún

Cabos and Cancún both specialize in all-inclusive options, but the accommodations tend to be a bit different. In Cancún,  you’ll find large, all-inclusive resorts across a wide range of price points, with most right on the beach. Cabos specializes in luxury and boutique hotels on the beach.

Cancún: In Cancún, you’ll find all-inclusive resorts to suit whatever type of vacation you want. For the partiers, there is Grand Oasis, Hard Rock Hotel, and Beach Palace – all located within the Hotel Zone, close to bars and restaurants, yet all with their party scenes on-site. Families will love The Ritz-Carlton, the Hyatt Ziva, and the Moon Palace– all with many amenities for kids. If you are just looking for a relaxing beach vacation, try Le Blanc Spa Resort, Beloved Playa Mujeres, or Secrets the Vine.

Los Cabos: Cabos is your spot for a more luxurious stay. The One&Only Pamilla sits on one of Cabos’ only swimmable beaches and features an aromatherapy turn-down menu and daily snacks delivered to your room. The Waldorf Astoria Los Caobs Pedregal is accessible only through a private tunnel and features amenities like bungalows that open up directly to the ocean and oceanside dining. Las Ventanas al Paraiso, A Rosewood Resort has personal butlers with stunning infinity pools, and when you arrive, you get a free head and neck massage to ease those travel tensions.

Safety in Los Cabos and Cancún

Cancún: Recent news headlines might have you asking the question: Is Cancún safe? According to the U.S. State Department, Cancún (and Quintana Roo as a whole) has a Level 2 warning, which means travelers should exercise increased caution when visiting. The warning states that “While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations and turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens.” Other countries with a Level 2 warning include Italy and Germany. As with many other destinations, it’s wise to stick to popular areas and take property safety precautions. For more peace of mind, check out our story on how to stay safe while traveling in Mexico.

Los Cabos: According to the U.S. State Department website, there are currently no restrictions on travel for U.S. government employees in Baja California Sur, which includes tourist areas in Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, and La Paz. Much like Cancún, Cabo has a Level 2 warning, so travelers should exercise caution. Tip: Stick to toll roads if you absolutely must drive and only do so during daylight hours. For a broader look at the region, check out our story on travel safety in Mexico.

Cost of Cancún Vs. Los Cabos

Let’s face it: taking a vacation can be expensive. The good news? Most places you will book for a trip to Cancún and Los Cabos will be all-inclusive, so you won’t need too much extra money on hand once you book your hotel and flight. So, is there a difference between the two when it comes to those two major bookings?

Cancún: You are typically going to be able to find better deals when booking a trip to Cancún. You’ll find a wider range of affordable all-inclusive resorts. Just make sure you do your research before booking; you don’t want to find yourself in the midst of the hottest resort for college spring break when you are looking for some relaxation. Cancún has several nonstop flights from all over the US, and the lowest rates range from $225-$300 depending on where  you are flying from.

Los Cabos: Cabos, being the center of luxury, has less budget-friendly options to choose from than Cancún, so you’ll likely be spending more if you choose Cabos as your destination. That being said, you’ll get exactly what you’re looking for in Cabo: relaxation. Flights tend to be a bit more expensive, and nonstop flights to San Jose aren’t as abundant from all over the country as they are to Cancún. Flights are $355-400 depending on where you fly out of and when you fly.

One of Our Favorite Hotels in Cancún: Excellence Playa Mujeres

This luxury all-inclusive is set in the heart of a private resort community to the north of Cancún. Modern, luxurious rooms are huge and have big whirlpool tubs; all have balconies and some have ocean views. Certain categories have swim-up access or private plunge pools. All the features expected for this caliber of resort are here, including seven pools, nine restaurants, 11 bars, and a high-end spa.

One of Our Favorite Hotels in Cabo: Solmar Resort

As the oldest and most budget-friendly hotel in the Solmar Hotels & Resorts group, Solmar Resort All-Inclusive is a solid choice for travelers seeking affordable, beachfront lodging in Cabo San Lucas. The list of amenities is decent, including two pools, an alfresco restaurant with ocean views, a sushi bar, and beachfront spa cabanas.

7 Steamy Clothing-Optional Resorts in Jamaica https://www.oyster.com/articles/clothing-optional-resorts-in-jamaica/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/clothing-optional-resorts-in-jamaica/#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2023 14:36:04 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/64395-clothing-optional-resorts-in-jamaica/

Away from the daily grind, excused from household chores, impervious to an ever-expanding inbox — travel has a lot to do with feeling free, maybe as much as or even more than it does with seeing the world. Travelers wanting to take that intoxicating sense of escape and multiply it could go on a nude-friendly vacation, where they can unplug, strip down, and disconnect. Jamaica is an excellent destination for naturists, with several hotels catering to various comfort levels. Some resorts allow nudity almost anywhere, while others have designated clothing-optional (or clothing-forbidden) beaches and pools. Look at our favorite Jamaica resorts, where you can swap your swimsuit for your birthday suit.

1. Hedonism II, Negril

Hedonism II Resort name on brick with mermaids and a trident.
SmarterTravel Hotels

Hedonism II, or “Hedo,” as it is lovingly called by its staff and cadre of loyalist guests, is an adults-only all-inclusive that allows (nay, encourages) full-on nakedness throughout much of its grounds. Specifically, the disrobed goings-on occur in Hedonism’s “nude” section, where nudity is required at the beach, pool, and hot tub. A “prude” side is designed for those who prefer a calmer vibe and cover-ups.

2. Couples Negril

SmarterTravel Hotels

Suppose there was ever an aptly named resort. In that case, Couples Negril is a child-free all-inclusive that focuses on romance and adult-themed features like private candlelit dinners and a separate clothing-optional beach. The peaceful area is insulated from the rest of the property by a row of tall bushes and has its own hot tub, a full bar — where there’s rarely a wait — and a private bathroom, horseshoes, and bocce ball. (For some, lawn games in the buff will ultimately express liberation. For others, such entertainment pales compared to the naked tub wrestling and naked glitter body painting available at nearby Hedo.)

3. Couples Tower Isle, Ocho Rios

Private pool with lounge chairs and table in the water at the Couples Tower Isle All Inclusive
SmarterTravel Hotels

All four Couples resorts in Jamaica have a dedicated area for nudists. At Couples Tower Isle it’s a small island (officially called Tower Isle, but more playfully known as Nude Island), a short boat ride from the resort. The rocky refuge has a small pool, a little beach, a swim-up bar, and a stone tower with bathrooms. Guests can keep to themselves in the gazebos or mingle during staff-led games and the buffet lunch, when seafood, jerk chicken, and salad are brought to the island. Early-morning tours are offered to non-nudists, but for the most part, this namesake island is clothing prohibited, not clothing optional.

4. Couples Sans Souci, Ocho Rios

SmarterTravel Hotels

The nude beach at Couples Sans Souci is notable for its size, seclusion, facilities, and natural beauty. Called Sunset Beach, this stretch of sand is quite a bit bigger than the hotel’s main beach and has ample loungers set up under palms and palapas. The beach has a dedicated pool with a swim-up/walk-up bar, underwater tables, a stone grotto, and an adjacent hot tub. There’s a lunch buffet with grill fare (burgers, jerk chicken) and ice cream. Like Tower Isle, this area is not clothing optional but prohibits clothing altogether. Those who prefer to stay suited up must wait until the evening when the resort lifts the beach’s nude policy so everyone can see the sunset. During the day, Sunset Beach is for couples only.

5. Grand Lido Negril Au Naturel All-Suite-Resort

Two chairs and a table set up next to a private pool with drinks and food on the table overlooking the ocean
SmarterTravel Hotels

When Grand Lido reopened in 2017 — its predecessor of the same name and on the same site was demolished — it presented a new concept for the Caribbean: the luxury nude resort. (Hedonism II has an extensive nude section but is not luxurious. Couples Sans Souci is more upscale, but its naturist-friendly areas are limited. And while guests at Club Orient Resort in St. Martin can go anywhere on-site completely naked, the property is a middle-of-the-road, family-friendly option. We could go on, but the point is that Grand Lido stands out as a luxurious, clothing-optional spot for adults only.) Couples and singles are asked to cover up in the lobby but are free to roam the rest of the 26-suite resort entirely clothing-free. They also have access to sister resorts Royalton Negril and Hideaway at Royalton Negril. The former is family-friendly, and the latter is only for adults, but both require clothing.

6. Couples Swept Away, Negril

Sandy relaxing beach with palm trees and a hammock hanging between two palm trees.
SmarterTravel Hotels

Dotted with sea grape trees and straw umbrellas, the white-sand beach at Couples Swept Away is made for Instagram. The resort’s nude beach is separated from the main beach by hedges and has a bar, hot tub, and bathroom with showers. Like other locations in the Couples family, the beach here is strictly for couples only (no singles), and no clothing is allowed (not even string bottoms).

7. Grand Bahia Principe Jamaica, Runaway Bay

Oyster Hotels

Grand Bahia‘s nude beach is one of our favorite nude beaches. It’s a low-key, clothing-optional spot for those genuinely interested in sunbathing without a stitch of swimwear. The resort’s main clothing-mandatory beach is just as beautiful as its nude counterpart and is excellent for snorkeling.

Location, style, and budget are the three most important factors for an all-inclusive resort. Easy enough. But wait! You’ve found several options that fit your criteria, and you notice that one hotel charges for internet access and water sports. At the same time, its competitor down the beach offers free Wi-Fi and unlimited scuba diving. Or maybe you realize that some resorts on your list require cheesy plastic bracelets and complicated reservation systems at their restaurants. Still, others are mercifully wristband-free and have no or minimal reservation policies. Is this the sort of all-inclusive with booming music on the beach and people getting blitzed before noon, or a couples-only, no-kids-allowed resort that’s overly sexed-up to an awkward degree? Researching the intricacies and distinctions of major all-inclusive brands can feel as complex as charting your own nautical course to reach the destination. Enter Oyster’s handy road map to major all-inclusive brands, where we break down their overall vibe and distinguishing characteristics.

Zoetry Locations

Zoetry Rooms

Gorgeous rooms feature upscale beach decor, balconies or terraces, satellite TVs, and sexy bathrooms with Bulgari toiletries and rainfall showers. Fully stocked minibars are refreshed at least once daily, bottles of champagne and fruit plates are delivered daily, and room service is available 24 hours.

Zoetry Features

Zoetry lacks the loud music of typical all-inclusive, but not the robust activities offerings: yoga, meditation, classes (cooking, cigar-rolling, cocktail-making, and more) are available to guests — once they can extract themselves from the beaches and pools, that is. The all-inclusive rates cover unlimited top-shelf liquor, craft cocktails, and tasty a la carte meals (featuring organic options) at the hotels’ health-oriented restaurants.

Zoetry Details

Gratuity, three-times-daily housekeeping, 24-hour laundry service, and unlimited worldwide calling are all included.

Our Top Pick for a Zoetry Resort: Zoetry Agua Punta Cana

The 96-room Zoetry Agua Punta Cana is one of the most luxurious and tranquil all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic, period. It offers an uncrowded white-sand beach, spacious suites with butler service, a long pristine pool, and one of the area’s best spas. Guests also get a free 20-minute massage and free horseback riding on the beach.

The Brand: Secrets Resorts

Secrets Resorts Locations

Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Dominican Republic

Secrets Resorts Scene

Vast, luxurious adult-only resorts popular for weddings and honeymoons, each with its own laundry list of property features.

Secrets Resorts Rooms

Upscale in-room features like rainfall showers, well-stocked minibars, and furnished balconies or terraces are de rigueur at these resorts. So are “secret boxes,” two-door compartments that allow guests to pick up their room service deliveries (available 24/7) without having to open the door and compromise their privacy, even for a second. Most rooms have whirlpools for two people.

Secrets Resorts Features

These high-end all-inclusive have enough features to make leaving their premises virtually unnecessary. Things like expansive spas, gourmet restaurants, and secluded beaches (with food and drink service available here and at the pools) are all aimed squarely at adults and centered around romance and relaxation.

Secrets Resorts Details

Meals and drinks are included in the room rates for all guests, so all properties are wristband-free. Gratuities and taxes are included, and some activities, like scuba diving and fishing, cost extra.

Our Top Pick for a Secrets Resort: Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun

Located on the Riviera Maya, Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun is a romantic, adults-only resort on a private white-sand beach lined with sunbeds, cabanas, and palapas. Its pool complex sprawls over 86,000 square feet, with swim-up bars in many of its 13 pools (one, an infinity pool with panoramic ocean views). Several shallow pools feature tables, chairs, lounges, and hammocks set in the water. Meanwhile, a stunning spa offers couples’ treatments in private outdoor cabanas on the beach. In addition to the buffet, a wide range of high-quality dining options are available, including Japanese teppanyaki, French cuisine, a wine cellar with over 200 different vintages, and, for an extra charge, romantic dinners for two on the beach.

The Brand: Couples Resorts

Couples Swept Away | Couples Resorts Negril

Couples Resorts Locations

Jamaica (Negril and Ocho Rios)

Couples Resorts Scene

These mellow, family-run properties are reserved exclusively for couples, so their focus is on romance, relaxation, and adult features, like private candlelit beachfront dinners and adorable banners across room doors announcing honeymoons or anniversary statuses. Guests are more likely to be found sipping Red Stripes and daiquiris on the beach and breezing through light reads than boozing and partying hard.

Couples Resorts Rooms

Elegant, breezy, and modern, with ceiling fans, air-conditioning, balconies with either ocean or garden views, and free Wi-Fi. Free minibars are restocked based on guests’ specifications (minibars come standard with ginger ale, grapefruit soda, and Red Stripe; guests can request red, white, and sparkling wine and full-size bottles of vodka, gin, whiskey, and Appleton Special Rum for no additional cost).

Couples Resorts Features

Couples resorts don’t just dish out free meals and drinks; rather, guests enjoy free unlimited golf, free motorized and non-motorized water sports (even scuba diving), and free excursions, including glass-bottom boat tours and sunset catamaran cruises with beer and rum punch. Also free are fitness classes like water aerobics and yoga, and tennis lessons, plus nightly entertainment. Perhaps it’s not all top-notch — for instance, the nightly live sets can be a little cheesy, and the “free” golf requires guests to hire a caddy on their dime. Still, with so much free stuff, there’s little room for complaint. Most Jamaican Couples resorts have a dedicated nude section; at Couples Tower Isle, it’s the resort’s namesake island, a small rocky refuge about a one-minute boat ride from the mainland. It’s a cool little spot with a small pool, a little beach, and a swim-up bar — but guests must be willing to bear it all to experience it. The island’s policy is not clothing optional — it’s clothing prohibited, which might be disappointing for guests who prefer to keep things covered.

Couples Resorts Details

Couples resorts have a no-tipping policy, though there are a few instances where it is suggested. For example, caddy fees at the golf course are mandatory, and tipping the airport shuttle driver per bag is customary.

Our Top Pick for a Couples Resort: Couples Swept Away and Couples Negril

With four Couples options between Ocho Rios and Negril, it’s tough to figure out why one might be better. Couples Swept Away has the famed Seven Mile Beach location, while Couples Negril sits just north on the somewhat quieter sands of Bloody Bay — but this may be a plus for those guests looking for a mellower beach vibe.

The Brand: Sunscape

Jamaica, Curacao, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic

Sunscape Scene

Crowded mega-resorts that are high on kid count and low on local personality. For families looking for mid-range to upper-middle-range beach vacations, Sunscapes can prove solid picks.

Sunscape Rooms

Expect terraces or balconies and flat-screen TVs with cable; minibars are refreshed every few days instead of daily.

Sunscape Features

These resorts offer typical all-inclusive experiences for the Caribbean, with multiple pools (at least one with the requisite swim-up bar) and ample games and sports (snorkeling and rock climbing, among others). The Explorer’s Club provides supervised indoor and outdoor activities for younger kids, and Core Zone Teens Clubs offers video games, karaoke, and organized socials. Food and drinks are on hand 24 hours a day, though what’s available and when can be confusing, and the food quality might be lacking to some. Reservations at the a la carte restaurants are not required. Unlike some luxury all-inclusive on this list, food and beverage service is not offered at the pools or beaches.

Sunscape Details

All taxes and gratuities are included; no wristbands.

Our Top Pick for a Sunscape Resort: Sunscape Splash Montego Bay

Located right on the beach, close to Montego Bay’s highlights, Sunscsape Splash packs a big value. Resort features include four pools, three restaurants, a fitness center, a spa, a beauty salon, and a spectacular pirate-themed aquatic park. Though not ultra-luxe, the property offers an affordable vacation with a beautiful Caribbean Sea backdrop.

Couples will find that the well-behaved little ones here are hardly ever a bother. Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla in Mexico and Paradisus Princesa del Mar Resort & Spa in Cuba are fully dedicated to adults. Paradisus Playa del Carmen is emphatically for families.

Rooms are across-the-board luxe, though the adult-only Royal Service suites tend to come with higher-end amenities, such as whirlpools. All rooms have 50-inch flat-screen TVs, balconies or terraces, Nespresso coffee machines, minibars, Thierry Mugler toiletries, free Wi-Fi, and 24-hour room service.

Paradisus by Melia Features

Features here span from the expected (tequila and wine tastings, free non-motorized water sports like kayaking and snorkeling) to the above-and-beyond (elaborate spas and pools, impressive international buffets, and a la carte restaurants).

Paradisus by Melia Details

Tipping is not mandatory, but tax is not included.

Our Top Pick for a Paradisus by Melia Resort: The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real

With less than 200 suites, The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real, the family-friendly section of Paradisus Palma Real, has a serene environment, a top-notch spa, yoga, and a seemingly never-ending pool area. Guests also get free access to the services, facilities, and restaurants next door Palma Real — particularly the beach area, which this property lacks.

The Brand: Barcelo Hotels & Resorts

Barcelo Hotels & Resorts Locations

All-inclusive locations throughout Mexico, Dominican Republic, Aruba, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.

Barcelo Hotels & Resorts

Not all Barcelos are all-inclusive resorts. However, the Spain-based hotel group is still a major player in the market, with more than a dozen all-inclusive venues in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The smaller Barcelo Bavaro Beach in Punta Cana is for adults only. Still, the other locations have broad appeal and massive acreage that allow families, partiers, and couples to mingle seamlessly.

Barcelo Hotels & Resorts Rooms

Stocked minibars, coffee machines, and bathrobes are all standard amenities. Room service is available 24 hours; it’s free for guests staying in Premiere Rooms but comes at a cost in standard rooms.

Barcelo Hotels & Resorts Features

The usual suspects are in full force: large pools, tons of eating and drinking options, fitness centers, theaters, tennis and basketball courts, mini-golf courses, soccer fields, kids’ and teens’ clubs, and activities like dance classes and water games. Some offer 24-hour casinos and nightclubs. All locations have a spa, but all-inclusive guests generally don’t get access to the spa’s facilities without paying for treatment. Though Barcelos are slightly generic-style resorts best suited for the masses, they encourage culturally immersive experiences. For example, at the two sister properties in Punta Cana — the aforementioned adult-only Barcelo Bavaro Beach and the family-friendly Barcelo Bavaro Palace — guests can take excursions to local rum factories or learn bachata, a traditional Dominican dance.

Barcelo Hotels & Resorts Details

Almost all services at the hotel are covered, including all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks throughout the day), unlimited drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), daily activities, and non-motorized water sports. Taxes and gratuity are covered in the rates.

Our Top Pick for a Barcelo Hotel: Barcelo Maya Palace

Guests staying at the high-end Barcelo Maya Palace (15 minutes south of Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s Riviera Maya) can use all the facilities at its sister properties, the Barcelo Maya Colonial and the Barcelo Maya Caribe. Still, the reverse is not true, which makes Barcelo Maya Palace feel more serene and exclusive.

Laid-back all-inclusive that appeals to all types of travelers.

Dreams Rooms

Nearly all upscale rooms feature balconies or terraces, with daily refreshed minibars, free 24-hour room service, and daily housekeeping.

Dreams Features

Notable among Dreams’ expected features are its food and drink programs — many of the gourmet dining options are a la carte restaurants that don’t require reservations, don’t usually have long wait times for dinner, and serve surprisingly good and varied food. Bars serve name-brand liquor and local and international beers — a perk that’s hard to find at most all-inclusive hotels. And in addition to the 24-hour room service, guests can order meals and drinks via beach and pool service.

Dreams Details

No wristbands here. All Dreams guests are on the all-inclusive program, which covers taxes and gratuity, Wi-Fi and calling, kids’ and teen clubs, daily activities, and nightly entertainment.

Our Top Pick for a Dreams Resort: Dreams Punta Cana Resort & Spa

Situated on a white-sand beach, Dreams Punta Cana Resort & Spa is a lovely upscale all-inclusive property in Bavaro. It offers a laundry list of features, such as water sports, daily and nightly entertainment, and numerous kid-friendly amenities. But the Dreams goes above and beyond with one of the largest pools in the D.R. (it never feels crowded).

Breathless Resorts Features

The breadth of features on hand here is truly, well, breathtaking (most are included in the rates). Pristine pools (which include swim-up bars, whirlpools, and lazy rivers), tennis courts, water sports such as snorkeling and sailing, and daily dance, workout, and Spanish classes are among the offerings. Food and drink service is available on the sandy beaches, as well as by the pools.

The Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa is massive, so guests rarely feel overwhelmed by crowds. Common spaces are calm with earth-toned decor and teak accents, while rooms are decorated with bright geometric patterns. Shady walkways and manicured lawns weave throughout the resort’s restaurants, bars, shops, and pools, and a lazy river also snakes through the grounds. Club Med Scene

One of the most recognizable and long-lasting brands in the all-inclusive chain game, Club Med began as slightly hedonistic adult-only properties, but most locations have made the family-friendly switch and now allow all ages.

Club Med Rooms

Oyster’s reporters have consistently noted that Club Med rooms are somewhat on the small side (true at the Marrakech, Guadeloupe, and Turks & Caicos locations that we’ve reviewed), but they’re generally tastefully decorated and well-equipped; all rooms in all resorts have free Wi-Fi.

Club Med Features

Almost all of the expected all-inclusive features are present and accounted for, plus a heavy emphasis on activities. Club Med’s all-inclusive package allows guests to try exciting sports like waterskiing, archery, and wakeboarding or even enjoy circus activities like tightrope walking and swinging on a life-size flying trapeze. These activities would be expensive elsewhere and add value to Club Med’s rates. Tamer activities include yoga, golf, tennis, beach volleyball, snorkeling, and guided walks.

Riu Scene

With nearly 70 all-inclusive locations worldwide, Riu resorts range from outdated and bland to super-stylish and modern. Most provide lively and somewhat alcohol-fueled atmospheres for couples, spring breakers, and — except the chain’s nine adult-only locations — families.

Riu Rooms

Some resorts’ rooms include Riu trademarks, such as stocked minibars with liquor dispensers (restocked daily) and 24-hour room service (both free).

Riu Features

Hotel offerings vary from location to location, but rarely do they exceed the realm of what’s expected for the all-inclusive category. It’s safe to expect a mega pool (or three), diverse entertainment day and night, group fitness classes, and non-motorized water-sports equipment like stand-up paddle boards, snorkel gear, and kayaks (some locations offer one free scuba lesson in the pool). Locations with on-site casinos and nightclubs permit guests free entry.

Our Top Pick for a Riu Hotel: Hotel Riu Ocho Rios

With more services and entertainment than some U.S. towns, this massive all-inclusive resort feels like a city unto itself. Amenities include seven restaurants, an enormous private beach, and two large pools. In-room facilities are also excellent, including daily-stocked minibars, liquor dispensers, and private balconies, many with ocean views.

Fun and upscale rock-n-roll-themed mega-resorts with a little (actually, a lot) for everybody: rowdy college kids, romantics, and families.

Hard Rock Rooms

Huge, stylish rooms with double-jetted bathtubs, free liquor dispensers, and 24-hour room service. Hard Rock’s “The Sound of Your Stay” program offers free music-related loaners, including guitars (full electric “menu”), headphones, and amps.

Hard Rock Features

Hard Rocks are very popular with couples and friend groups, but they’re surprisingly family-friendly, thanks to many great amenities for kids of all ages, such as kids’ clubs, signature family suites, kiddy pools, and kid-friendly menus. And speaking of the restaurants, many all-inclusive have multiple dining options that look and feel the same and serve strangely similar dishes, but this is not the case at Hard Rock. Here, the staggering assortment of restaurants — from all-you-can-eat buffets to international a la carte options to grab-and-go places — have individualized menus, custom decor, and consistently good food. Restaurants do not take reservations, but with so many dining options, they’re not even necessary.

Hard Rock Details

Tipping is not mandatory, but tax (20 percent) is not included.

Our Top Pick for a Hard Rock Hotel: Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana

With 1,790 rooms, 13 pools and restaurants, 23 bars, an 18-hole golf course, 65,000 square feet of meeting space, a massive spa and fitness center, and the Dominican Republic’s largest casino, the word huge doesn’t even seem big enough to describe the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana. But the Hard Rock isn’t all about size — the massive luxury property is one of the nicest all-inclusive in Punta Cana.

Excellence Resorts Scene

Luxurious, adult-only resorts that achieve an upscale feel without the least bit of pretension. Their excellent service helps with this immensely; upon arrival, prompt porters will whisk away luggage, and guests are handed a glass of Champagne. Excellences are popular for weddings (there are a few key spots on the beach for ceremonies), so it’s not just honeymooners here but also partiers in celebration mode.

Excellence Resorts Rooms

Elegant, contemporary suites with private balconies and an array of modern amenities, like flat-screen TVs, iPod-docking radios, and free Wi-Fi (though some guests complain it’s unreliable). Marble bathrooms are large and have separate jetted tubs and two-person rainfall showers, as well as double vanities and separate toilet rooms. Stocked minibars have beer, wine, and liquor plus snacks, and 24-hour room service is available at no extra charge. Excellence Club guests get premium minibars, Bulgari toiletries, and Nespresso machines.

Excellence Resorts Features

These luxury resorts on beautiful beachfront grounds offer tropical vacations with activities, dining options, and pools. The massive, meandering pools (Excellence El Carmen has a whopping 23) never feel too crowded, and at night, guests can choose from several high-end restaurants before hitting one of the many bars. Food and beverages, as is entertainment, are especially good for an all-inclusive resort. Since restaurant reservations are unnecessary, it’s easy to be flexible depending on the mood. Dining options constantly evolve and include various gourmet and casual (mostly gourmet, given the crowd).

Excellence Resorts Details

All meals, snacks, and alcoholic drinks — even premium brands – are included in the price. Taxes and tips are technically included, but tipping is quite common. Golf, spa treatments, and use of business facilities are available for extra fees.

Our Top Pick for an Excellence Resort: Excellence Playa Mujeres

Set in a private resort community north of Cancun, the Excellence Playa Mujeres is an adults-only all-inclusive property with lots to keep guests occupied: seven swimming pools, a high-end spa, a theater for nightly entertainment, fitness classes, Spanish lessons, and non-motorized water sports. Ten buffet and a la carte restaurants serve various cuisines such as Italian, Asian, Mexican, and Indian, plus 11 bars offering premium alcohol and 24-hour room service. Rooms are modern and luxurious and have big whirlpool tubs; all have balconies, some with ocean views. Visitors can also upgrade to one of the swim-up suites and rooftop terrace suites with plunge pools.

While some elements remain shared with the lesser Iberostar Rose Hall Beach and Iberostar Rose Hall Suites — like the spa, fitness center, casino, nightclub, and shops — guests at Iberostar Grand Hotel Rose Hall get the pick of the litter with free access to all three resorts’ restaurants, bars, pools, and beaches

The Brand: Royalton

Aerial view of the Royalton CHIC Punta Cana from the ocean
Royalton CHIC in Punta Cana | Royalton

Royalton Locations

Cuba, Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, Jamaica, Mexico

Royalton Scene

Busy mega-resorts with great pools and lots of all-inclusive perks (especially for their upgraded Diamond Club guests). Some Royalton locations have sections exclusively for adults, and others are adult-only.

Royalton Rooms

Room style ranges from classic colonial (like at Cuba’s Royalton Hicacos Varadero Resort & Spa) to contemporary and understated (as seen at the Dominican Republic’s Royalton Punta Cana Resort & Casino). Paying extra for Diamond Club room categories unlocks a slew of extra amenities and services, like pillow menus, nightly turndowns, free late checkout, and a separate dedicated butler team (who can provide property tours, unpack and pack belongings, iron clothing, and arrange birthday or anniversary celebrations).

Royalton Features

Nicely maintained beaches are a given, and Diamond Club members typically have access to exclusive beach space with a private bar and lounge area. On the food front, Royalton’s straightforward all-inclusive package happily lacks the many restrictions and reservations required at competing hotels. Instead, there’s unlimited reservation-free dining plus 24-hour (but occasionally slow) room service.

Royalton Details

Royalton’s all-inclusive rates cover most taxes, though prepare for additional exit taxes and reef taxes, depending on the location. Gratuity is included, but you should still tip the staff like at all resorts. Rates include 24-hour food and drink (Diamond Clubbers get the top-shelf stuff), ample organized activities, non-motorized water sports, resort-wide Wi-Fi, and select international calling.

Our Top Pick for a Royalton Resort: CHIC by Royalton Luxury Resorts

Many all-inclusive properties advertise that they have multiple a la carte options but have one large room divided into several smaller “restaurants.” This is not the case at CHIC by Royalton Luxury Resorts in Punta Cana, where each restaurant is thoughtfully designed and feels like a standalone establishment. Other noteworthy features include ultra-modern rooms, an on-site spa, a beautiful pool, and beach facilities.

The Ultimate Guide to Las Vegas’ Sexiest Topless Pools (And How to Behave) https://www.oyster.com/articles/ultimate-guide-to-las-vegas-topless-pools/ Wed, 21 Jun 2023 15:25:46 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/?p=523059

Wet24 Rooftop Pool at the Strat Hotel and Casino

Ever wanted to bare it all 25 stories above the Las Vegas strip? The Wet24 Rooftop Pool at the Strat Hotel and Casino is your chance. This “toptional” pool offers luxe day bed rentals and has live DJ sets. Stratoshphere guests get free access, everyone else pays a pretty reasonable cover charge.

Moorea Beach Club at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino

The sprawling Mandalay Beach pool complex offers a variety of pool experiences and one topless-optional pool that’s strictly for visitors 21 and over. The scene is sophisticated and high-end, and guests can purchase everything from a pool chair massage to furnished villas with a private pool area. This is one of the pricier day pass pools on our list, and men pay a higher cover than women.

Tao Beach at The Venetian Resort

Tao Beach, at The Venetian Resort, has gone back and forth on its topless policies. As of now, tops are off (on weekdays). Getting into this massively popular daytime pool party can be complicated. It’s probably the most popular daytime pool party in Vegas, and it draws celebrities and beautiful people from around the world. The best way to get past the bouncer is to book a room at The Venetian — hotel guests get in without being on the Tao Beach list. Second, you can rent a cabana — though that starts at a few hundred dollars and goes way up.

European Pools at the Encore and Wynn Las Vegas

The Wynn and Encore sister resorts each offer a large European (read: topless) pool. The scene is generally very chill, and well—adult. Guests are greeted on arrival and escorted to chairs, where they’re offered umbrella and towel assistance — plus food and drink menus. Both pools have a DJ, an outdoor bar that you can swim to, and gaming tables with blackjack and craps. If you’ve ever wanted to gamble without a top, this is your chance to win big topless.

Las Vegas Topless Pool Etiquette Guide

  1. Pools are “Toptional”: Women aren’t required to take off their tops to enjoy topless pools. Wear as much, or as little, as you feel comfortable.
  2. No Photos: Seriously, none. Even if you’re taking a photo of your margarita with nothing more than a statuesque palm tree in the background, security guards will insist you put your phone away.
  3. Don’t Stare: Topless pools are meant to be fun and relaxing places where women can feel safe enough to sunbathe, dance, or swim topless. Creepy behavior, such as openly leering, is only going to encourage women to put their tops on and leave. Go to a strip club if you want to gawk at topless women.
  4. Don’t Touch: Do we even have to say it? Non-consensual touching is against the law, no matter where you are or what someone else is (or isn’t) wearing. Touching a topless woman will, at best, get you escorted out of the pool, and at worst, land you at the Clark County Detention Center.
  5. Adults Only: If you’re under 18 (and likely under 21 at most pools), you’re too young to be at a Las Vegas topless pool. Be prepared to show ID or be barred from entrance.
  6. Go Easy on the PDA: It’s a topless pool, not an orgy. If you’re into the swinging scene may we suggest a stay at Hedonism II?

The 6 Best Spring Break Party Destinations for Fun, Sun, and Nightlife    https://www.oyster.com/articles/top-10-spring-break-party-destinations/ Mon, 06 Feb 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/articles/32113-top-10-spring-break-party-destinations/

March is just around the corner, which means college students across the United States are gearing up for spring break. Whether you’re celebrating a week off from class or shaking off winter’s cabin fever, there are lots of reasons to indulge in the rowdy holiday tradition. With only a few weeks left to plan your getaway, we’ve broken down the 6 best spring break party destinations

#1 Spring Break Party Destination: Punta Cana

Beach at sunset in Punta Cana

Known for its palm-fringed white-sand beaches, an abundance of booze-soaked all-inclusive resorts, and late-night revelry, Punta Cana continues to reign as the Caribbean’s leading local for spring breakers. Spanning the Dominican Republic’s easternmost tip, Punta Cana’s shoreline is lined with a slew of sprawling resorts catering to all types of travelers and budgets. All-inclusive drink packages, swim-up bars, and turquoise seas ensure the party gets started not long after sunrise. Come nightfall, tear yourself away from the resort bar for a night out at one of Punta Cana’s epic nightclubs. Housed in a series of caves, Imagines’ one-of-a-kind setting sees wild evenings filled with hip-hop beats and flowing drinks from the open bar. Part club, part acrobatic extravaganza, Coco Bongo is a must for its over-the-top shows and lively atmosphere.

Recommended Hotel: Riu Republica

#2 Spring Break Party Destination: Cancún

Cancun seen from above at sunset

Cancún has long been a mainstay on spring break itineraries, and this Mexican beach town continues to live up to the hype. The Hotel Zone, which spans miles of pristine beaches and high-rise megaresorts, serves as the hub for party-minded travelers. After sunrise, the party atmosphere quickly warms up at swim-up bars. There are also plenty of water sports, such as Jet Skis and stand-up paddleboards for daytime fun. Later in the evening, spring breakers flock to the compact Party Zone, which houses many of Cancún’s best bars and clubs. The city offers a massive dance floor and live DJs, while Coco Bongo, like its Punta Cana sister, is famous for circus-style performances and foam cannons. The Indian-themed club, Mandala, is a more intimate choice if dancing alongside thousands of partygoers sounds a bit intense. Señor Frogs is a fixture of Cancún nightlife and merits a stop for its famous yard-long drinks and upbeat vibe.

Recommended Hotel: Aloft Cancun

#3 Spring Break Party Destination: Miami

Colorful street in Miami at sunset

Beach at Acqualina Resort and Spa/Oyster  With its extravagant nightlife, hip sidewalk cafes, stunning beaches, and exceptionally attractive people, Miami checks all the boxes for a perfect spring break destination. The Ultra Music Festival transforms the typically serene Bayfront Park into a huge dance party, with world-famous electronic music acts like David Guetta and Major Lazer taking the stage. March is stacked with other shows and events affiliated with Miami Music Week, as well as pool parties and booze cruises. The Miami Music Pool Parties at the Surfcomber present a much cheaper, but still thrilling, option to enjoy live music and drink poolside in style. Other Miami Beach venues, such as the Shore Club host pool parties with an upbeat atmosphere and music.

Recommended Hotel: Catalina Hotel

#4. Spring Break Party Destination: Las Vegas

Las Vegas strip at sunset

Sin City has decades of credentials as an all-out party destination, between its colossal casinos, trendy nightclubs, live shows, and seedier establishments. Although lacking sand and surf, Las Vegas compensates with an extensive schedule of pool parties ranging from low-key house music to alcohol-fueled bashes. The Mandalay Bay’s Daylight parties draw thousands for dance parties and DJs. If you’re keen to swim in just your birthday suit, the clothing-optional Bare Pool Lounge at The Mirage and Naked Pool at the Artisan Hotel can oblige. Come nightfall, the partying shifts to Las Vegas’s nightclubs. Hakkasan is known for its multi-level, high-energy dance floor, while Foxtail has a lavish interior lounge with cage dancers and an outdoor poolside bar.

Recommended Hotel: The Cosmopolitan

#5. Spring Break Party Destination: Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta

Perched on the shimmering, azure waters of the Bahía de Banderas along Mexico’s Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta’s natural beauty and charming city center are also home to a dynamic nightlife scene. Amidst the white-washed historic buildings and cobbled streets, you’ll find vibrant local music clubs like Club Roxy and La Ingrata. A more upscale, but still raucous venue is La Vaquita. Dancers glide overhead hundreds of dancers on swings in this beachfront establishment. Puerto Vallarta is Mexico’s leading LGBTQ beach retreat, as demonstrated by a dozen or so bars and clubs in the Zona Romántica neighborhood. Mr. Flamingo, Apaches, and Frida are perfect spots for a cocktail or two on the patio before heading to the lewder atmosphere at Anthropology. Overall, you should expect a more international and diverse mix of visitors compared to Cancun and the domestic destinations on this list.

Recommended Hotel: Villa del Palmar Flamingos Beach Resort & Spa

#6. Spring Break Party Destination: New Orleans

Although the Big Easy’s legendary Mardi Gras festivities can happen in late February, there is still plenty of partying in store for visitors during March and April. The epicenter of New Orleans’ nightlife, Bourbon Street, is home to numerous lively bars and music venues. Thanks to more liberal open-container laws (you can drink on the street), the party seamlessly flows between the street and bars. For a rowdier evening, stop by Tropical Isle for their infamously strong hand grenade cocktails, the Cat’s Meow for its karaoke bar, and The Swamp — whose wraparound balcony grants a birds-eye view over Bourbon Street. Other options include Maison Bourbon for its excellent jazz performances and potent cocktails, as well as the more laidback music venues along Frenchmen Street.

1. Carnival Fantasy

The Main Pool on the Carnival Fantasy/Oyster

Wondering which cruise line is best for partying? Well, we found it. Carnival Cruises are hands-down the way to go for those seeking a tried-and-true cruise party experience. For starters, the cruise line has its own DJ academy that’s run by famous Las Vegas and Miami DJs. The brand essentially gave birth to the party cruise with its “Fun Ship” fleet, and the Carnival Fantasy is the most senior of those. In fact, there are a total of eight Fantasy-class sister ships that are commonly deployed on shorter weekend getaway cruises. That makes these the perfect length cruises for travelers who want to party, but not spend too many of their vacation days. Interiors are bright and colorful throughout the ships, including the the bars and nightclubs. The Fantasy itself features the line’s latest BlueIguana Tequila Bar and RedFrog Rum Bar, as well as a nightclub and theme party nights. Is this a peaceful weekend getaway? Likely not. But if you’re looking to live your wildest life, the Carnival Fantasy is for you.

2. Carnival Vista

The Beach Pool on Carnival Vista/Oyster
The Beach Pool on Carnival Vista/Oyster

If you’re seeking Carnival’s slightly more refined side, the Carnival Vista may be more your speed. All the fun is still here, but the formerly flashy decor of previous ships is swapped for a more subtle beach resort aesthetic. You’ll find brand staples like BlueIguana Cantina, along with the pharmacy-themed Alchemy Bar and RedFrog Pub & Brewery offer beers that are brewed right onboard. Aside from the bars and clubs, parties are hosted at the outdoor pool deck and indoors at the Liquid Lounge. Check your cruise itinerary for theme nights, so you know which outfits to pack.

3. Norwegian Escape

Jimmy Buffett’s Magaritaville at Sea on Norwegian Escape/Oyster
Jimmy Buffett’s Magaritaville at Sea on Norwegian Escape/Oyster

Norwegian Cruise Line channels Jimmy Buffett to create the relaxed party atmosphere aboard the Norwegian Escape. The musician’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar and Margaritaville at Sea embody his philosophy of partaking in the good life. Still, passengers can get their blood pumping again with all sorts of high-octane activities. There are thrilling waterslides plus a challenging ropes course to enjoy. Broadway-worthy productions in the Stardust Theater are also thrilling. And then there are the themed parties (like the wildly popular Glow Party), which you’ll learn more about just below.

4. Norwegian Pearl

Comedy and Dancing on Norwegian Pearl/Oyster
Comedy and Dancing on Norwegian Pearl/Oyster

In addition to the Norwegian Escape, the Norwegian Pearl is party central. For starters, many music festivals come to the ship, giving guests a chance to listen in on multiple live sets as well as mingle with their favorite artists. The expansive pool deck and concert-friendly Stardust Theater also make great live-entertainment venues. However, Norwegian is perhaps most famous for its themed party nights. These include Latin Night, ’70s and ’80s nights, and the Glow Party — where black lights, club music, and neon are guaranteed to make the night memorable.

5. Harmony of the Seas

Royal Promenade on Harmony of the Seas/Oyster
Royal Promenade on Harmony of the Seas/Oyster

If you’re after a cruise ship that’s really more of a floating city, you’d do well to check out the ships of the Royal Caribbean International line. Specifically, the Harmony of the Seas. It’s one of the largest at sea, and has almost too many venues, restaurants, and bars to count. How big is the Harmony of the Seas? Well, for starters, its central Royal Promenade is big enough to host parades, and its Studio B is a multipurpose hub of activity complete with a genuine ice rink. This one even has an escape room experience — Escape the Rubicon — as well as the thrilling Ultimate Abyss spiral dry slide and AquaTheater, with performers executing all sorts of cool acrobatics and aerials. Harmony of the Seas also has a bevy of bars to keep your thirst at bay, including a robot bar and a nightclub with a light-up dance floor.

6. Anthem of the Seas

The North Star Bar on Anthem of the Seas/Oyster
The North Star Bar on Anthem of the Seas/Oyster

Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas is another ship that mixes party-ready elements (like a dizzying number of bars) with cool thrills for those who get their kicks in more visceral ways. Or maybe you love both! Let’s start with the booze. Like sister ship Harmony of the Seas, you’ll find the Bionic Bar on board, where robots stir and shake all types of boozy concoctions to shockingly solid reviews. There’s also the North Star, which allows you to sip cocktails while dangling way above the cruise deck. For cruisers who prefer some action, check out the line’s signature FlowRider surf simulator as well as the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator (which is especially fun lit up in neon at night). For milder, kid-friendly fun, head to the SeaPlex. Here you’ll find a video game lounge, bumper car arena, roller rink, circus school, and dance club.

7. Disney Fantasy

It will come as absolutely no surprise that when it comes to family party time, Disney Cruise Line takes the cake. And its Disney Fantasy ship just so happens to pack in the most fun for travelers on its weeklong voyages. You can expect Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and other recognizable Disney characters at sea, which is guaranteed to please the youngest cruisers. Best of all, the line does a fine job of providing something for everyone. Families can catch stage shows, film screenings, and opt for themed dining, as well as ride the AquaDuck water coaster and play at the AquaLab. Kid-centric destinations onboard include the Midship Detective Agency or Disney’s Oceaneer Club — where the little ones will get character visits and access to games and toys. Adults can head to Europa for The Tube nightclub or La Piazza, Ooh La La, O’Gills Pub, and Skyline bars.

8. Disney Wonder

Tiana's Place, Disney Wonder/Courtesy of Jason Leppert

The Disney Wonder may be smaller than the Fantasy, but you’ll still find plenty of family-fun party activites on board. Those include its own AquaLab interactive water park., as well as a long line-up of deck performances (including one helmed by Mickey Mouse as your ship departs port). Fireworks and pirates are also cruisers favorites. When it comes to dining, the Disney Wonder excels, especially at Tiana’s Place, a restaurant inspired by “The Princess and the Frog.” Here, a live jazz band and parade accompany your southern-inspired meals. Of course, big hits with kids include the Marvel Super Hero Academy and Frozen Adventures, which are both part of Disney’s Oceaneer Club. No Disney Wonder cruise would be complete without a visit from Queen Elsa and Princess Anna during the family-friendly “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular.”

9. Queen Mary 2

QM2/Courtesy of Jason Leppert

While it may not come to mind as a party ship at first, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is a wonderful option for those who want to step back in time. This ocean liner is all about creating an elegant vintage vibe, with its formal dress code and live big-band music. The ship attracts a more mature crowd than you’d find on Carnival’s ships, and far fewer families than the Disney cruises. It also has an incredibly high price tag, with luxury dining venues and the world’s only at-sea planetarium. Itineraries can be incredibly long and are often booked as a once-in-a-lifetime adventure (including around-the-world sailings). When it comes to entertainment, expect everything from Broadway-style revues to Shakespeare.

Grand Oasis Cancun

Ask anyone what the biggest spring break hotel is in Cancun, and the Grand Oasis Cancun will be the answer. This mega-resort is part of a two-hotel complex that prides itself on entertainment. The Grand Oasis Cancun sits smack in the middle of Cancun’s Hotel Zone, so those who choose to leave the all-inclusive property will find no shortage of things to do. This is the kind of place with “Official Party Staff” on the grounds, and 14 bars provide unlimited entertainment. Those looking for a quiet vacation with the kids may want to look elsewhere, or at least avoid the often raucous party scene at the crowded outdoor pool.

Hard Rock Hotel Cancun

With a gorgeous infinity pool featuring ocean views, five restaurants serving international cuisine, live entertainment, and a relaxing spa, the Hard Rock Cancun is one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the region. It also happens to be one of the hardest partying Cancun hotels. It’s a lively and busy place, with music on offer from morning until late at night, free drinks served 24 hours a day, and two popular swim-up bars. Pool parties with major international performers, as well as the requisite foam parties, are all regular occurrences here, especially during spring break season. However, the property is massive, meaning that there are also some quieter spots for those who want to relax in the sun and be pampered.

Melody Maker Cancun

Situated right on a beautiful stretch of beach in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, the Melody Maker Cancun is one of the fresher and more modern options on this list. What’s more? The vibe is generally only loud during the day, so you’ll have your night free to head to clubs like The City. All units feature stunning lagoon or sea views, and free minibars that are refilled daily. The pool is the hub of activity at Melody Maker. There’s a large central whirlpool, a bar, and pumping music. On weekends, the Melody Maker is wild, with DJ sessions making its Delirio Day Club a hotspot, though the party wraps up at sunset (and there’s a cover). If you’re after a little wellness to go along with your margaritas and shots, head to the spa or the excellent gym.

Temptation Cancun Resort

The Temptation Resort Spa Cancun is an adults-only, topless-optional property that caters to 21-and-over, uninhibited guests. There’s never a dull moment at this all-inclusive resort, which features themed swimming pools (including a Sexy Pool) and risqué live shows every night. Fun-seeking singles and couples will find a range of entertainment from provocative games and contests — like the Miss Temptation competition — to sexy Temptation Idol karaoke. You’re coming here to indulge yourself — and we mean more than just doing tequila shots at the swim-up bar.

Krystal Cancun

This busy and bustling resort is a great option for spring breakers who want a good amount of daytime action along with incredibly easy access to the most famous bars and nightclubs of the Hotel Zone. Some of the biggest spring break nightclubs in Cancun — Coco Bongo, The City, and Mandala — are essentially next door, making it easy to get home after a night out. For the pre-game, the atmosphere is lively, with live music and DJs throughout the day. You’re not coming to Krystal Cancun for peace and quiet — but who’s looking for that on spring break, anyway?

Golden Parnassus Resort & Spa

The Golden Parnassus (not to be confused with the Great Parnassus up the beach) is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort in the Hotel Zone. You’re here for the low rates and wild atmosphere (read: the rooms and style are dated and nothing to write home about). Yes, all 214 rooms come with small furnished balconies — some with ocean or lagoon views — and the “club” level rooms have extras such as double whirlpool tubs. However, the majority of the action during spring break takes place outdoors around the pool and on the beach. It gets rowdy — in a good way, of course —and you can expect events like foam parties at the Golden Parnassus pool.

Beach Palace

There’s a lot to like about the 287-room Beach Palace if you’re searching for an all-inclusive experience in the heart of the Hotel Zone’s party strip. Bars and nightclubs are essentially just outside the hotel’s front door, but even without leaving the property, your spring break will be in full effect. The Beach Palace has three pools with stunning ocean views, lots of dining options, great rooms, a full spa, a tiny but modern fitness center, and a location right on a gorgeous white-sand beach. Expect events like foam parties and other activities around the pool to keep things lively — especially during Cancun’s rowdy spring break season. At night, there are live shows to keep the party going.

Crown Paradise Club Cancun

The Crown Paradise Club Cancun is a one-stop shop for budget-friendly, all-inclusive vacations — especially for spring break-aged travelers hoping to spend their days pounding margaritas and mezcal shots. With nearly more bars than restaurants, this hotel makes sure you never have to walk too far to get a drink. There’s a bar right in the lobby when you arrive, though other day drinking possibilities include La Brisas Bar (by the main pool), the adult-only swim-up pool bar Club Caribe, and the Beach Bar, though the latter is only open weather-permitting. At night, head to Trafalgar’s or the College Bar. While the latter technically has opening hours, we’ve definitely found occasions where drinks are being served 24/7. Note that this isn’t a party hotel year-round and definitely caters to families as well. However, the Crown Paradise does a good job of providing separate children’s and adults-only areas so everyone can have fun.

Hotel Riu Cancun

With their often reasonable price points and generously free-flowing alcohol policies, the Riu hotels have been a party destination for some time. Hotel Riu Cancun is no different. Located right on the beach, the Riu Cancun has swim-up bars and pools in spades, as well as solid buffet and themed dining. Expect animation teams and plenty of activity around the pools all day long. A range of on-site activities includes nightly live shows, a spa, tennis, windsurfing, and a nightclub. Get your spring break on.

The Best Bars and Nightclubs in Las Vegas for Epic Party Nights https://www.oyster.com/articles/best-bars-nightclubs-las-vegas/ Thu, 23 Jan 2020 13:00:19 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/?p=516647

The Best Las Vegas Nightlife: Clubs, Bars, and Dives

Hakkasan Nightclub: Celebrity DJs and Crowds of Beautiful People

Hakkasan is the eponymous club of the Hakkasan Hospitality group (who also own Jewel). These guys know how to deliver the Vegas nightlife experience that tourists want. It’s big, it’s always busy, and it even has its own Cantonese restaurant (Hakkasan) and lounge bar (Ling Ling) attached. A night at Hakkasan, which inside the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, is all about luxury clubbing, which means you can expect to find the biggest DJs in Vegas – think the likes of Calvin Harris and Steve Aoki – spinning here. Dress the part and budget accordingly.

The Underground at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino

XS Nightclub: Evening Pool Parties and Bottle Service

Housed inside the luxurious Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, XS is possibly the most overtly lavish nightclub in Sin City, right down to the gold-plated walls. The beautiful interiors are matched by an impressive outdoor space whose canopy of string lights and shimmering pool offer an escape if the incredibly ostentation interior gets a little too packed – which it often does due to headliners like Diplo and The Chainsmokers.

The Adult Pool at Encore at Wynn Las Vegas

Skyfall Lounge: Strip Views and Dancing

When you need to get away from it all – or just take a break from the craps table – for a hot minute then head for the rooftops at the Skyfall Lounge on the 64th floor of the Delano Resort. Besides the amazing cocktails that the upscale lounge bar serves on its open air patio, the main attraction is the amazing views over the Strip that takes in the Luxor light beam opposite. This is low key Las Vegas nightlife at its best.

Franklin at the Delano Las Vegas

Jewel Nightclub: LED Dance Floor and VIP Rooms

Ultra-high-tech, super swanky, and in possession of an amazingly lit LED dance floor, Jewel Nightclub at Aria Resort & Casino is without doubt one of the best/most popular Las Vegas clubs. The high-end feel to the place is emphasized by the grand, sparkly interior – it’s called Jewel after all – and high rollers can secure entire VIP rooms should they wish. For regular clubbers, the general admission areas are more than fun, with hip-hop and chart bangers, along with big name performers like Drake. Las Vegas nightlife done right.

Sage at the ARIA Resort & Casino

Commonwealth: Double-Decker Bar and a Secret Speakeasy

Double-decker bar, Commonwealth, has the benefit of offering many things in just one bar: a rooftop drinking spot with live music, a lively cocktail bar, and a secreted speakeasy out back. Beyond the bare brick facade of the downtown cocktail spot that sits on a corner of Fremont Street, the dimly lit, stylish space is both evocative of a bygone Vegas while keeping things current with its music policy and contemporary cocktail list. A night at Commonwealth is a Las Vegas nightlife night to remember.

Frankie’s Tiki Room: Rum and Polynesian Fun

Who doesn’t like the kitsch beauty of a tiki bar? Frankie’s Tiki Room ticks off the tiki on our list and it is the place to come for a rum cocktail served in the type of mug you’ll want to take home with you (but please don’t). It’s a lot of fun, thanks to a soundtrack of surf rock and a laidback vibe. The bar offers a long list of rums and lethal cocktails to work your way through.

Drai’s: Iconic Rooftop Club with a Pool Party

One of the best and oldest rooftop clubbing experiences in town, Drai’s is a Las Vegas institution. Taking over the top deck of the Cromwell Hotel, the club treats its customers to expansive rooftop views alongside heavy hitting hip-hop bangers that boom out of the speakers. The indoor/outdoor nature of Drai’s is a winning combination, meaning you can flow from daytime beach club pool party straight into night time clubbing – if you’re still standing.

The Pool at The Cromwell

Atomic Liquors: Vintage Bar and Old School Celebs

Las Vegas nightlife doesn’t have to just mean swanky cocktail bars and red-velvet line clubs. If you look around there are plenty of vintage spots waiting to be found – not that the famous Atomic Liquors is exactly regular. This bar has been in business since 1952 and served as a regular haunt of some famous faces over the years. Don’t worry, it isn’t just running on nostalgia, the excellent beer list and beer cocktails are also a worthy reason for a night here.

Omnia: Palatial Vibe and Celebrity DJs

Score a table to make the most of Las Vegas nightlife at Omnia, the nightclub inside Caesars Palace that’s famous for a good time and infamous for its crowded dance floor. The crowding comes because of the quality of the entertainment, with celebrity DJs like Steve Aoki and Tiesto as part of the stellar line-up. The palatial look of the club may give an indication of its high-end credentials but once the DJs are in full flow Omnia is all about the music and an inimitable Vegas vibe. In short, Omnia is a true Vegas nightlife experience.

Garden of the Gods at the Pool at the Caesars Palace Hotel & Casino

Dino’s Lounge: Dive Bar and Karaoke

Whether you’d call Dino’s Lounge a dive bar depends on your definition, but what you can definitely say that this place has some history. Like the sign says, it’s “The last neighborhood bar in Las Vegas.” The classic neon sign will draw you in, and once you’re belly up, the cheap liquor will give you the courage to step up for karaoke. May we recommend, “Luck be a Lady?”

Mr. Coco LV: Mixology and Caviar

An exclusive bar inside the Palms Casino Resort, Mr. Coco LV is the spot for Instagrammable cocktails and live entertainment. A truly high-end experience, if the bar’s not wowing with its interesting mixology, it’s wooing you with its piano music and caviar. Definitely a place for date night, or just because, you know, you’re in Vegas so why not make it a night to remember?

The Palms Place Pool at Palms Casino Resort

Velveteen Rabbit: Arts District and Cocktails

If you take the chance to venture off the strip then you will be rewarded with great drinks at the Velveteen Rabbit. Located in the Arts District of Downtown, the bar is a classy affair that goes big on delicate cocktails that fit with its location away from the more brash appeals of the city. Head here for conversation, cocktails, good music, and – if you’re staying on the Strip – a change of scenery.

Yardhouse: Happy Hour and Sports

Yardbird may be a chain, but its prime location at the Venetian Resort is an ideal spot to deliver a huge range of small batch bourbons to pair with classic Southern American bar food, like crispy chicken biscuits and artisanal macaroni and cheese. For the eaters out there, Yardbird was nominated for a James Beard award. We suggest fueling up here before a big night out in Las Vegas.

The Venetian Resort Las Vegas

Our Party Hotel Pick in Las Vegas: Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas

The Nirvana Pool at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas

Hard Rock is one of the most unapologetically hedonistic hotels in Las Vegas. It’s a place where influencers and celebs party and gamble to their hearts’ content. This Hard Rock features chic restaurants, an A-list nightclub, live music, and a tattoo parlor (if you want to take home a permanent souvenir). That said, the Las Vegas Hard Rock is a fun franchise at heart, not a luxury hotel. Don’t miss out on the iconic and rare memorabilia — estimated to be worth more than $4 million — like Prince’s “Purple Rain” suit, Keith Richards’ guitar, or an elaborate tribute to Michael Jackson at the entrance. You’re in Vegas, so party on.

A Guide to Punta Cana’s Epic Nightlife https://www.oyster.com/articles/best-punta-cana-nightlife-bars/ Tue, 21 Jan 2020 13:00:11 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/?p=516459

Coco Bongo Punta Cana: Acrobats and Confetti Cannons

If you’re looking for a wild night with just the right amount of hedonism thrown in then Coco Bongo should be the first stop on your tour of Punta Cana clubs. Seemingly universally loved by all who visit, the venue is an experience that goes way beyond the standard drink and dance nightclub format. Guests can pay for a table to watch a live extravaganza show and disco that includes dancers, acrobats, confetti cannons and, naturally, pounding club and party hits. It’s big, loud, and brash and makes for a must visit attraction. There is an age limit of 18 and older.

Imagine Punta Cana: Cave Party and Open Bar

Partying in a cave is such a vacation thing to do, that it would be crazy not to partake in a visit to Imagine Punta Cana when you’re on the island. Located in a warren of caves, (although the bar tends to rely on just one main room/cave) Imagine tends towards the wilder end of the spectrum of Punta Cana nightlife. There’s an open bar and a music policy that sways heavily towards hip-hop. Beware, being a natural cave, ventilation inside the club leaves a lot to be desired but that kind of adds to the party experience you can’t get at home.

ORO Nightclub Hard Rock: Go-Go Dancers and Internationally Known Names

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana’s in-house nightclub, ORO, is the closest you’ll come to feeling the Vegas vibe in Punta Cana. Provided a big crowd is in the house—which it generally is—ORO Nightclub is one of the best resort clubs in town. On any given night, the regular DJs who control its amazing sound system are enhanced by live acts from go-go dancers to acrobats. ORO Nightclub is big on theme nights and often delivers international names so time your visit right (you need to get tickets in advance) and you might catch, ahem, Nelly.

Api Beach Bar: Swimming Pool and Beach Cocktails

Punta Cana nightlife isn’t only about the wild clubs and bars on the strip, there are plenty of places that offer a relaxed vibe from which to enjoy the laidback spirit of the Dominican Republic. The Api Beach Bar is one such place, delivering great views of the marina from its cabana lounge setup on the edge of the water. Great service and cocktails will keep you coming back. Oh, and there’s a swimming pool.

Yopo Tiki Bar: Fresh Ingredients and Laidback Energy

At Yopo Tiki Bar it’s all about the drinks and the imaginative vessels that they’re served in. Another bar that eschews the in your face excesses of some of Punta Cana’s most famous spots, Yopo is a classy kind of place with a design-led look. Bonus points at the bar for bringing the knowledge that the venue takes its name from the region’s Yopo tree. Cool design, creative mixology, and an impressive variety of Tiki mugs make it the discerning choice. May we suggest the santa bahia, made with mango puree and coconut cream?

Drink Point: Latin and Hip-Hop Music

The crowd at the ever-popular party spot, Drink Point, is made up of a good mix between locals and tourists who appreciate the mainly Latin and Hip-Hop music policy. Prices here are very reasonable so stock up on a bucket of El Presidente beers and get into the bachata on the dance floor. Be aware that the bar usually holds it fair share of Sanky-Pankies on the lookout for a “date.”

Legacy Disco: In-House Dancers and Neon Lights

The flowing space of Punta Cana super club, Legacy Disco, is decorated in glowing neon lights. Which makes the place look like a backdrop out of the cartoon/movie, Tron—definitely a good thing. Depending on the ticket you purchase, the open bar awaits and the free-flowing drinks, along with the in-house dancers, encourage an anything goes vibe. Music policy is mixed, so the Punta Cana rarity of hearing dance and techno is available at Legacy Disco on certain nights.

Mangu Disco: Two Stories of Dancing and a Sports Bar

View this post on Instagram

#ilovemangupuntacana

A post shared by Mangu Disco Punta Cana (@mangudiscopc) on

Those staying at hotel Occidental Punta Cana don’t need to wander off sight to visit the hotel’s highly rated nightclub, Mangu Disco. The club attracts guests and non-guests alike and when it’s busy the two-floor club makes for a great night out. Along with the club space, which mixes the music policy between Latin, American chart hits, and hip-hop, there is also a sports bar setup for that between-dance sports hit.

El Kan Drink House: Bachata and Merengue Indoors and Out

An indoor/outdoor local spot perfect for escaping the American billboard charts that can often dominate nightlife in Punta Cana, El Kan Drink House is the place to choose if you want a distinctly Dominican feel to the night. Music is almost entirely Latin, so the dancing will be sound tracked by bachata and merengue for an authentic experience that’s much more relaxed than the in-your-face hedonism of the likes of Coco Bongo and Drink Point.

Don Queco Cigar and Rum Bar: Luxury Cigars and Vintage Rums

Located in the Westin Puntacana resort and Club, Don Cueco Cigar and Rum Bar should be sought out when you’re in the mood for thoughtful musings on the charms of Punta Cana, armed with a Siboney Reserva rum and a stogie. As you’d expect from a cigar and rum bar within a hotel, the look is refined, so think polished wood floors, cozy recliners, and tempting displays of fine cigars and vintage rums covering the walls.

Our Party Hotel Pick in Punta Cana

The Moon Pool at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana

If you’re in Punta Cana for a good time, but not a long time, you need to make the most of your party hours. And that’s easily done at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana. There are a whopping 13 swimming pools, 12 restaurants, 23 bars and lounges, an 18-hole golf course, a massive spa and fitness center, and the Dominican Republic’s largest casino. This swish property is one of the nicest all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana, and all-inclusive rates cover party amenities and facilities such as 24-hour room service, nightly entertainment, and top-shelf drinks.

The 9 Best Party Destinations in the Caribbean https://www.oyster.com/articles/best-party-destinations-in-the-caribbean/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/best-party-destinations-in-the-caribbean/#respond Mon, 09 Sep 2019 14:30:06 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/62366-best-party-destinations-in-the-caribbean/

1. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Hotel Conde de Penalba

Although visitors to the Dominican Republic often head to Punta Cana for its beachside fun, it’s actually not the best party spot in this Caribbean nation. Santo Domingo, the capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is packed with bars, nightclubs, and hotels offering live performances. Visitors can pick between their favorite style of music — merengue, salsa, bachata, pop, and reggaeton — or sample all of them at various spots throughout the city. Onno’s Bar and Sabina Bar are just a couple of favorites. In addition to fancy wine bars and buzzing dance clubs, there are grocery stores known as colmados that turn into popular spots for locals to grab a beer and listen to Latin music. Plus, the abundant historic colonial architecture, sea views, and museums are excellent ways to keep busy in the day.

Our Party Hotel Pick: Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando

With a history dating back more than 500 years, the buildings that house Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and now home to one of Santo Domingo’s most charming and historic upscale hotels. The property is well-located for exploring the city, plus it has an outdoor pool with decent views of Rio Ozama and La Residence restaurant, a fine-dining French eatery with a romantic alfresco dining space.

2. Cancun, Mexico

Pool at Grand Oasis Cancun/Oyster
Grand Oasis Cancun

College kids and young-at-heart travelers head to Cancun for the free-flowing margaritas, Caribbean sunshine, and rampant nightlife spots. Though visitors should expect lots of Americanized restaurants and bars, as well as some rowdy behavior, there’s no denying it’s a great spot to let loose while overlooking the beautiful white-sand beach. Resorts in the Hotel Zone can provide all the party essentials, plus the area is packed with popular spots like Señor Frog’s, Carlos’n Charlie’s, and Coco Bongo dance club, all of which are close together for easy bar-hopping.

Our Party Hotel Pick: Hard Rock Hotel Cancun

The all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotel Cancun is a fantastic pick for party-minded guests, thanks to its gorgeous infinity pool with ocean views and two popular swim-up bars, lovely beachfront, five restaurants serving international cuisine, and live entertainment, plus a great spa to rejuvenate after a night of dancing and imbibing.

3. San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Pool at the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a fun, colorful, and vibrant country with tons to do, and nowhere is that more apparent than the capital of San Juan. On Puerto Rico’s northern coast, San Juan has gorgeous Colonial-style buildings and cobblestone streets, which contrast the casinos, nightclubs, and bars found throughout. Start your night with refreshing pina coladas, then pop into one of the many spots for salsa and flamenco dancing, such as the popular La Factoria. For more sand-filled fun, head to Isla Verde Beach and grab a cocktail at Alambique Beach Lounge.

Our Part Hotel Pick: San Juan Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino

The upscale San Juan Marriott resort and Stellaris Casino is a 527-room property with direct access to a scenic stretch of Condado Beach. Extensive features include a pool complex with swim-up bar and waterslide, attractive guest rooms with flat-screen TVs and balconies, multiple restaurants and an ocean-view bar, popular casino, and full-service spa.

4. Aruba

Marriott's Aruba Surf Club
Marriott’s Aruba Surf Club

You won’t find a ton of massive all-inclusive resorts or areas packed with nightclubs in Aruba, but the small island is still a worthwhile party spot, particularly for those looking to do some gambling. Drinking and gambling at one of the several casinos is legal for 18 year olds, plus the casinos are often open until late at night and have some form of entertainment. Visitors can find a hotel with a swim-up bar for day drinking, and head to the Palm Beach area at night, which is home to popular Gusto night club, Soprano’s Piano Bar, Saloon Bar, and Bugaloe Beach Bar & Grill. For more authentic culture, drive 20 minutes south to Oranjestad to the highly frequented rum shop, Local Store, and Cafe Chaos, a pub that attracts both locals and tourists.

Our Party Hotel Pick: Marriott’s Aruba Surf Club

The lively Marriott’s Aruba Surf Club is a mid-range property in Aruba’s popular beachfront High Rise district. Rooms with kitchenettes, or apartment-style units with full kitchens are available, and many have wonderful views of the pool and ocean. The highlight here is the series of pools with a Lazy River, waterslide, and swim-up bar.

5. Negril, Jamaica

Rick's Cafe, Negril/Oyster
Negril, Jamaica

Travelers looking to experience more local culture than the average Caribbean island — without sacrificing party-filled activities — should head to Negril, Jamaica. Although it’s not nearly as culturally immersive as the capital of Kingston, it offers a lovely blend of stunning beaches, seaside bars and restaurants serving jerk chicken and Red Stripe, and live entertainment from Jamaicans. Cliff-jumping at Rick’s Cafe, fresh seafood along Seven Mile Beach, and dancing to DJ-led music at spots like The Jungle Night Club are not to be missed.

Our Party Hotel Pick: Hedonism II

The all-inclusive Hedonism II is an upper-middle-range nudist resort, popular with couples looking to spice up their vacation, fun-seeking groups, and some singles. This adults-only resort is tucked into a quiet, secluded section of Negril’s Seven Mile Beach in Jamaica. There are both a “nude” and “prude” side here to accommodate guests of different comfort levels, in addition to sexy theme nights, a risque playroom, and shop for lingerie and toys.

6. Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena, Colombia
Cartagena, Colombia

You may know Cartagena from its plethora of Instagram-worthy facades in vibrant hues with climbing greenery, but this coastal Colombian city is home to a wide array of day and nighttime attractions. After spending a day exploring the colonial architecture within the historic Walled City, travelers can head to nearby spots such as Cafe Havana for cuban music and salsa dancing, Alquimico for fancy craft cocktails, and Via Apia for tapas. For more nightclubs, beaches, and modern buildings, take a quick taxi to the Bocagrande neighborhood.

Our Party Hotel Pick: Hotel Casa del Arzobispado

Set within the historic Walled City, across the street from Cartagena’s famous Catedral de Santa Catalina, Hotel Casa del Arzobispado is an upper-middle-range boutique that’s charming and elegant. The property has just 10 spacious, individually decorated rooms, a beautiful pool and courtyard, and free Wi-Fi. All rates include breakfast and there’s a small spa and sauna for relaxing.

7. Curacao

Lions Dive and Beach Resorts Curacao
Lions Dive and Beach Resorts Curacao

Albeit smaller than its neighbor Aruba, the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao still has a great spread of hopping bars and clubs. Close to the cruise terminal is Mambo Beach, which houses Wet & Wild Beach Club offering happy hour and live DJs, and Madera Ocean Club, featuring well-priced cocktail and food menus. The more central Willemstad area has 27 Bar & Terrace, a popular live music venue, and Sopranos sports bar. The great windsurfing conditions, photogenic colonial architecture, and rampant beautiful beaches are just cherries on top of the piña coladas.

Our Party Hotel Pick: Santa Barbara Beach & Gold Resort, Curacao

The 350-room Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort is an expansive luxury property that draws both couples and families with its array of features such as a lovely spa, kids’ camp, and three pools. The wide, white-sand beach and protected swimming area are highlights, as is an 18-hole golf course. The all-inclusive package covers all meals at the restaurant and pool bar; select beers, house wines, and cocktails

8. Barbados

Yellow Bird Hotel
Yellow Bird Hotel

Known for pink-sand beaches, observable British influence, and shipwreck diving, Barbados is a spirited Caribbean nation with nightlife to match. The most popular area for drinking and dining is St. Lawrence Gap, a strip of restaurants, bars, clubs, and hotels near Dover Beach. The Cove is a bustling club there that plays a variety of music including calypso and reggae, while nearby Old Jamm Inn has a dance floor, cheap drinks, and a mix of locals and tourists. For those closer to the capital of Bridgetown, the open-air Harbour Lights is a well-regarded nightclub, while visitors to the Holetown area often make a stop of Red Door Lounge and Drift Ocean Terrace Lounge.

Our Party Hotel Pick: Yellow Bird Hotel

The mid-range Yellow Bird has a great location across from a beach in the popular St. Lawrence Gap area, within walking distance of nightlife, restaurants, and several beaches. There are 22 rooms here with contemporary decor, kitchenettes, and furnished balconies overlooking the sea. 9. Trinidad and Tobago

The Pool at the Salybia Nature Resort & Spa TrinidadOff the coast of Venezuela, south of Barbados, sits the dual-island country of Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad is the larger, more industrialized island, while Tobago is more popular as a tourist getaway. Family-friendly activities such as lounging on the beach, snorkeling, and bird-watching are all popular activities, and there are historical attractions worth a visit. For party animals, the best time to visit the country is during February’s Carnival, when the streets of Port of Spain, Trinidad are transformed with numerous musical performers and parties, elaborately costumed women, and lots of dancing.
