1. Aruba

Beach at Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort Aruba

This petite island just off the coast of Venezuela has plenty to offer day and night. The alabaster sands and baby-blue waters of Palm Beach create the perfect honeymoon setting, or you can head to Arashi Beach for a bit more privacy and stellar snorkeling. Couples can go horseback riding, while soaking up the unique desert-meets-the-sea landscape, at Rancho La Ponderosa. Excellent dining is also easy to find. At Atardi, you can enjoy dinner while feeling the sand between your toes. And while you may lose a few bucks at the shiny Stellaris Casino, the weather is much less of gamble. The average year-round temperature is 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and Aruba sees the most sunny days per year of any Caribbean island. Plus, its location puts it south of the hurricane belt.

Our Romantic Aruba Hotel Pick:

2. Bora Bora

InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa

If you and your sweetheart want to splash out, a honeymoon to Bora Bora is a great pick. Jagged Mount Otemanu, rising about 2,400 feet above the sea, is the dramatic centerpiece of this French Polynesian island. The dormant volcano fans out to lush jungle and is ringed by a lagoon that’s home to stingrays and colorful fish. Whether you’re taking pics from afar, or hiking at its base, it’s awe-inspiring. Overwater bungalows, many with private plunge pools, are the favored accommodations on the island. A meal at Bloody Mary’s, an island institution where staff can explain the fresh fish on display in seven languages, is a must. You can sample poisson cru (raw tuna or mahi-mahi marinated in lime and coconut) while sitting on a coconut stump at a wood slab table. Fun fact: Famous lovebirds Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have eaten there more than once.

Our RomanticBora Bora Hotel Pick:

3. Bermuda

View from Cambridges Beaches Resort.

Cambridge Beaches Resort, Bermuda

Located 700 miles off the coast of North Carolina in the Atlantic, Bermuda is famed for its pink-sand beaches. Visitors here like to golf and have a proper afternoon tea — the latter owing to the fact it’s a British territory. If strolling around flower-lined lanes, admiring historic architecture, and riding around on a moped built for two (there are no rental cars here) sounds like your idea of a fun vacation, then Bermuda is might be your honeymoon spot. Astwood Cove is a small, pretty, and secluded beach that’s surrounded by cliffs, with a trail down to the sand. Don’t be surprised if you’re the only ones there (save for the colorful fish darting around your feet). After a day on the sand, head over to Waterlot restaurant for a blueberry bourbon smash.

Our Bermuda Hotel Pick:

4. Santorini

Pool at Lilium Villas Santorini

White-washed homes dotting the hillside, ancient vineyards, a tangerine-tinted sunset over the sapphire-colored Aegean Sea, and fresh seafood for days — sounds amazing, right? Santorini consists of two inhabited islands and a handful of islets, the site of a massive volcano eruption. You can tour Akrotiri, the excavation site of a 3,500-year-old Minoan town covered in ash (much like better-known Pompeii). Santorini’s fascinating geological history is to thank for its otherworldly beaches of red volcanic sand and black lava pebbles. Meanwhile, the village of Oia, full of quaint tavernas and family-run shops, is the perfect place to stroll for an afternoon. Its main plaza often has local musicians performing, and the stunning Greek Orthodox church has an interesting backstory.

Our Romantic Santorini Hotel Pick:

5. Maui

Old Lahaina Luau, Maui

With spectacular scenery, top-notch restaurants, opportunities to spot whales and sea turtles, and luxury resorts, Maui is arguably the best Hawaiian island for honeymooners. Plus, it’s noticeably less crowded than Oahu. Snorkeling in Molokini (a crescent-shaped volcanic crater) and Kapalua Bay is exceptional. Driving the famous Road to Hana, lined with waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and rainbow eucalyptus trees, is full of surprises. And while you may not picture yourself getting up and out before dawn on your honeymoon, taking a tour to see the sunrise at Haleakala National Park is worth it. Mama’s Fish House, known for its superior mahi-mahi, is one of the more popular romantic dinner spots.

Our Romantic Maui Hotel Pick:

6. St. Lucia

Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, St. Lucia/Oyster

Beach at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, St. Lucia

St. Lucia boasts both beautiful mountains and stunning beaches. It also (at least for now) sees fewer tourists than other Caribbean islands, so it’s a solid pick for couples seeking a tropical getaway without crowds. Lounging on Sugar Beach and kicking back on a sunset cruise will prove irresistible, but you’ll also find plenty of active pursuits. For example, a day spent hiking the Pitons (St. Lucia’s signature volcanic spires) and dunking in the nearby mud baths is worth the trip alone. Segway tours, zip-lining over the dense rainforest at Treetop Adventure Park, and a romantic walk around Morne Coubaril Estate, an 18th-century plantation, will also keep couples occupied.

Our Romantic St. Lucia Hotel Pick:

7. Jamaica

Beach at Couples Swept Away, Jamaica

For a laid-back (and fairly affordable) beach honeymoon, check out the Caribbean island nation of Jamaica. Great all-inclusive resorts abound here, including several with a lovey-dovey vibe, such as the Sandals and Couples properties. And after the stress of planning (and spending on) a wedding, the budget-friendly aspects of an all-inclusive can be enticing. If you do feel like getting off your lounger and exploring a bit, day trips to Dunn’s River Falls, Dolphin Cove, and Ochos Rios can be easily arranged. An outing to Rick’s Cafe in Negril is worth considering, too; the cliff diving and sunset you take in over dinner are seriously memorable.

Our Romantic Jamaica Hotel Pick:

8. Bali

Pool at Bulgari Resort Bali

Pool at Bulgari Resort Bali

New spouses dreaming of an exotic honeymoon might land on Bali, a relaxing, romantic island in the Indian Ocean. Staggered pagodas and grand temples, like the water temple Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, dot the landscape. Exotic bird-watching tours, snorkeling excursions to coral reefs, and dolphin swims are popular activities here. Kuta, one of Indonesia’s more bustling tourist destinations, is the place to head for after-dark fun.

Our Romantic Bali Hotel Pick:

9. Puerto Rico

Beach at W Retreat & Spa - Vieques Island, Puerto Rico

Beach at W Retreat & Spa – Vieques Island, Puerto Rico

This U.S. territory in the Caribbean has big advantages as a honeymoon destination: plenty of flights from the mainland (and a relatively short trip), no currency or language differences, and no need for a passport. Puerto Rico is home to an appealing mix of lively nightlife, fascinating history (Old San Juan is a UNESCO World Heritage site), and natural wonders. Among the latter are the caverns in Rio Camuy Cave Park, the El Yunque National Forest, and the bioluminescent bay in Fajardo. Another reason to put Puerto Rico on your list: After the devastating hurricane of 2017, it’ll feel good to support their tourism industry.

Our Romantic Puerto Rico Hotel Pick:

10. Maldives

View of Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives

View of Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives

Kick off married life in style by jetting off to the Maldives, an island nation of 26 atolls scattered in the Indian Ocean. A honeymoon to the Maldives doesn’t come cheap or easy (there are no direct flights from the U.S.), but if you have the money and vacation days to spend, this destination will not disappoint. Scuba diving opportunities are stellar, especially at the shark-filled Fish Head and the Victory shipwreck. Exquisite seafood, unsurprisingly, figures prominently on menus. The Maldives is also home to the one of the smallest capital cities in the world — Male — at 2.2 square miles. The National Museum is the big draw here, and many visitors enjoy strolling around the bustling fishing dock area.

1. El Dorado Seaside Suites, Riviera Maya

The Oceanfront Pool Swim-Up Suite at El Dorado Seaside Suites/Oyster
The Oceanfront Pool Swim-Up Suite at El Dorado Seaside Suites/Oyster

Located an hour south of Cancun, El Dorado Seaside Suites is an adults-only, beachfront all-inclusive that is split into two sections — the Palms and the Infinity. The latter lures those who like a bit more action, thanks to suites with terrace infinity pools and/or swim-out access to the hotel’s large, main infinity pool. Meanwhile, the former consists of buildings facing the peaceful gardens. Either way, guests will have access to some features at the next-door El Dorado Sensimar Riviera Maya, including six out of 10 gourmet-style restaurants. The large spa with hydrotherapy, relaxed dinner dress codes, and overall romantic vibe will also keep your wedding guests happy. Couples can exchange their vows right on the beach, or say their “I dos” on the open-air terrace.

2. Royal Hideaway Playacar, Playa del Carmen

Entrance to Lobby at Royal Hideaway Playacar/Oyster
Entrance to Lobby at Royal Hideaway Playacar/Oyster

The Royal Hideaway Playacar is one of the Leading Hotels of the World, a group of properties known for all-out luxury. If you’re looking for a sophisticated, adults-only wedding experience, this refined, colonial-style retreat should be on your short list. Your guests will be greeted with a flute of Champagne and cool towel in the lobby. Marble baths with walk-in showers and jetted tubs add to the overall wow factor. Guests can chill out in the cigar lounge, and pick between six restaurants. Its location is also bound to delight family and friends looking to make a full vacation out of your big day. It’s situated on a beautiful beach while also being close to Playa del Carmen’s renowned Fifth Avenue, lined with excellent restaurants, lively bars, and chic boutiques.

3. Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen

The Zen Pool at Grand Velas Riviera Maya/Oyster

Many of the best all-inclusive resorts don’t allow kids. However, if your heart is set on having your adorable niece as the flower girl, you don’t have to settle. The Grand Velas is an all-inclusive that manages to successfully cater to both grown-ups seeking peace and quiet as well as families with little ones. Set on over 80 acres of mangroves that meet a white-sand beach, its accommodations are split between three buildings — two family-friendly and all with their own pool complexes and eateries. The resort is staffed with several wedding planners and offers an array of packages with customizable options to match just about any couples’ preferences and budget.

4. Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso, Playa Paraiso

The Pool at Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso/Oyster

A glitzy, adults-only resort, the Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso is a top pick among couples in their 20s and 30s whose motto is “if we’re going to do it, let’s do it right.” Splash out on a destination wedding here, and you and your guests will be treated like VIPs. How so? For one, you’ll get a butler who can, before your plane even lands, customize the contents of your minibar, infuse your space with your choice of fragrance, and book your spa treatment in the exclusive couples cabin. A dedicated special event planner is on call, and yours will be the only wedding on any given day (something you’re unlikely to get at most venues back home).

5. Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa, Punta Mita

The Adult Pool at Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa/Oyster
The Adult Pool at Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa/Oyster

The main draw of the Grand Palladium Resort & Spa in Riviera Nayarit is the dreamy setting. What makes the scenery in Riviera Nayarit different from what you’d find on the east coast? Mountains — and huge cacti. There’s also a private beach here, as well as three pools, including a saltwater option and an adults-only infinity pool. The spa features Turkish baths and an impressive list of pampering treatments, which you and your sweetheart will likely need before the big day. However, it’s the stunning colonial-style wedding chapel that seals the deal. One thing worth noting: The open-air buildings offer amazing views, but there are no elevators. As long as climbing stairs isn’t an issue for anyone in your family, this property could be the gem you’re looking for.

6. Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa, Oaxaca

Oceana at Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa/Oyster
Oceana at Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa/Oyster

If you want your affair to be away from it all, this might just be your spot. Presiding over picturesque Conejos Bay, Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa sits far from other resorts in Huatulco, which is — to begin with — much less touristy that the Yucatan. Oceanfront ceremonies, under a breezy gazebo, are the way to go here. You can hold your reception in the lavish ballroom, on the beach, or on an elegant terrace, depending on the number of guests. This resort becomes an even stronger option if you expect a mostly young, single crowd. The clientele here is primarily couples and groups of friends, so you can expect to find plenty of bars open all day and night, including a swim-up option, the upscale Sky Bar, and the trendy late-night Desires Lounge. And with approximately 400 rooms, this property is big enough to avoid bumping into those annoying relatives. Also worth noting: The Secrets brand offers a honeymoon registry service.

7. Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo

Beach at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos/Oyster
Beach at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos/Oyster

There are many reasons to go with Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos: its all-inclusive rates go easy on most wedding budgets; the decor is fresh and modern; the entertainment options, including a theater, are top-notch; and the dining options are vast. You’ll even be able to exchange your vows on the beach. It’s a fun place for older guests, little kids, and teens — important if your guest list includes a wide range of ages. If you visit and decide to book your wedding at the property, you’ll receive a $500 credit toward one of their wedding packages. Extras include rose-petal decoration of your suite, a mani-pedi and hair styling, and a discount on spa services for all of your guests. The only drawback? The beautiful blue water here is not safe for swimming, much like many other areas of Los Cabos.

The Pros and Cons of Getting Married on a Cruise Ship https://www.oyster.com/articles/cruise-weddings-the-pros-and-cons-of-getting-married-on-a-cruise-ship/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/cruise-weddings-the-pros-and-cons-of-getting-married-on-a-cruise-ship/#respond Mon, 29 Oct 2018 16:42:56 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/articles/64679-cruise-weddings-the-pros-and-cons-of-getting-married-on-a-cruise-ship/

The Pros

Terrace Pool on Ruby Princess/Oyster
Terrace Pool on Ruby Princess/Oyster

1. Affordability

Carnival‘s wedding packages start at $249 per person, for a simple and lovely ceremony. Of course, the sky is the limit, with add-ons and luxury packages that can include everything from a trio of live musicians to custom wedding cakes, glamorous floral arrangements, and full video services.

2. Wedding Planners

Most cruise lines have a dedicated team of wedding planners who will organize and schedule everything on your behalf. Apart from picking your package and adding customized options, the bride and groom have little to do except show up and say “I do.” Some cruise lines even offer free wedding websites to help keep your guests up-to-date and organized.

3. Accommodations and Food

Deciding where you and your guests are going to sleep and eat is super simple on a cruise. The newlyweds can splurge on the Honeymoon Suite and guests have their choice of cabins — from interior to suite — depending on their budget. Norwegian‘s freestyle dining plan means there’s a huge variety of included restaurants onboard, plus specialty options for romantic dinners for two.

4. Vacation and Honeymoon

After the wedding, your honeymoon begins at the next port. And your guests can enjoy having a proper vacation. Cruise ships set sail on almost every corner of the world, allowing you to combine your wedding with anything from island-hopping to climbing glaciers to circumnavigating the entire globe. Need help deciding which cruise to book? Check out our list of seven great cruises for first-time cruisers.

5. The Captain

Some cruise lines, like Princess, allow you to be married at sea by the captain. How cute is that?

6. LGBT-Friendly

Many cruise lines offer legal weddings for same-sex couples. Carnival launched same-sex Bermuda weddings in 2018 and Cunard‘s first same-sex wedding is set to take place in November 2018.

7. Unforgettable Photos

If photos are your thing, a cruise ship wedding offers some of the world’s best and most creative backdrops, both on the ship and at port. You can hire a full photo team from the cruise ship, complete with edited and printed photos, or do it yourself.

8. It’s Fun

Couples have reported great success with getting married on cruise ships. Cruise ships tend to have a convivial and party-like atmosphere, and nothing makes people more excited than a wedding. Expect plenty of goodwill and well-wishes from fellow passengers on your big day at sea.

The Cons

Queen Mary 2/Oyster
Observation Deck on Queen Mary 2 (QM2)/Oyster

1. Other Passengers

If you’d prefer privacy on your wedding day, either choose a small cruise line or get married on land. You may not be the only bride on the boat, so be prepared to share the spotlight.

2. The In-Laws

Inviting family on a cruise ship for your wedding means they’ll be there on your wedding night and honeymoon. That works great for some families, but others may want more space and privacy.

3. Complicated Paperwork

Getting married at sea or in a foreign country can be complicated and require paperwork in advance. Be sure to check with your cruise line wedding planner for all the requirements. Some couples get married legally at home and simply have a ceremonial wedding on the ship.

4. Port Weddings Can Be Tricky

It’s not very common, but occasionally, a port call has to be canceled due to weather or time. If your heart is set on getting married on a specific beach in Jamaica, be sure you’re okay with having a back-up plan.

5. Seasonal Surcharges

Because cruise weddings have become so popular, some lines tack on fees for getting married on Valentine’s Day and preferred wedding months, such as May and June. Carnival even adds on surcharges for weddings on its newest ships.

1. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Photo by Steven Guzzardi via Flickr.

Photo by Steven Guzzardi via Flickr.

Sex and the City” got several things right about New York: the city’s obsession with brunch, the trauma of apartment hunting, and the undeniable romance of the Brooklyn Bridge. The latter served as the “happy ending” site for Miranda and Steve’s rocky relationship in the 2008 movie. And it also serves as a spot for zillions of engagement and wedding photos. There’s an excellent reason why. The bridge acts as the perfect picture frame for some staggering views of NYC’s skyline and waterways. And at night, you can see the city’s shimmering lights wink on while hovering over the East River. Just note that end to end, it’s a long walk of around 30 minutes, so plan accordingly.

2. Have a Drink at the Campbell in Grand Central.

With its palatial architecture and ceiling of constellations, Grand Central is already a spot that could dazzle any date, but the Campbell takes that a step further by providing a cocktail bar that matches this train terminal’s spirit. This bar was once the private office of a railroad tycoon in the 1920s, and since then it’s been reborn as a swanky spot for a nightcap. Thankfully, much of the original structure of the space has been preserved. And after being renamed and reopened in 2017, the venue is once again serving up old-fashioneds and Manhattans in clubby leather-backed chairs, but now a little al fresco terrace provides another place to sip and people watch.

3. Ride Jane's Carousel at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Photo by Shinya Suzuki via Flickr.

Photo by Shinya Suzuki via Flickr.

Brooklyn Bridge Park has undergone a rebirth in the last decade with the conversion of an industrial waterfront into a rolling green parkland, and its crown jewel is Jane’s Carousel. The ride itself is a glittering dream, diligently restored to its 1922 glory days. Its horses and chariots, enclosed in glass, sit below a whirling rooftop edged in incandescent bulbs. But what makes it truly spectacular is its setting, bumping right against the East River and placed just below the Brooklyn Bridge. From here, the entire city unfolds like a pop-up book, all of which you can see on (wooden) horseback. (Note: do check the carousel’s website to make sure it isn’t booked for private events or photo shoots.)

4. Catch a movie at the Paris Theatre.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BE6XrMNLOZH

NYC’s romantic spots aren’t always big and bombastic. Sometimes it’s the sweet little gems that really set the mood, and the petite Paris is in this latter category. This wee, single-screen movie theater is parked right next to the Plaza Hotel. As the name suggests, the theater tends to run art-house films, especially foreign ones (subtitled, of course). It’s not unusual to see the latest winners from the Cannes Film Festival screening here — with plenty of love stories among them. While interiors aren’t ornate, and the concessions stand is a simple little register in the basement, the theater has loads of intimate charm, plus a balcony up top, ideal as a couple’s hideaway.

5. Stroll the High Line.

Consider the High Line the Brooklyn Bridge’s hipper, edgier alternative. Like the bridge, it serves up excellent city and waterfront views along a lengthy promenade. But this pathway, that was once an elevated train track, snakes along the more industrial west side, crossing hipster hotels, art galleries, and the city’s gay mecca of Chelsea. All along the way, native vegetation like foxtail lilies and gray birch add a natural softness to the urban cityscape. Several wood-plank platforms, benches, and even loungers set on wheels that roll on the tracks give places to rest and cuddle up with your date and even take in the sunset over the Hudson River.

6. Get a taste of history and art at the Cloisters.

Photo by David Merrett via Flickr.

Photo by David Merrett via Flickr.

New York City is known for its museums, from the grand and imposing Metropolitan Museum of Art to the cheeky and rambunctious New Museum with its “hell, yes!” sign. But when it comes to romance, nothing can beat the enchanting elegance of the Cloisters. The collection here focuses on medieval treasures — think elaborate altarpieces, unicorn-themed tapestries, and stained-glass windows. But all of this is just the final flourish on a magnificent setting that feels a world apart from the city streets. This Gothic complex has several stone-columned walkways encircling herb gardens and fountains. If it all feels airlifted directly out of France, that’s because in many ways it was. Some of the structures here were pulled from other European abbeys and reassembled stone by stone in the Big Apple.

7. Shop at Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMyv5oEgq-n/

Tiffany and Co. was already a famed jewelry brand when Audrey Hepburn window-shopped its glittering cases in the ’60s classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” But it’s fair to say that Hepburn’s star turn in the film moved it from “widely known” to “iconic.” Just don’t go thinking a date night here is reserved for the one percent. Take it from Hepburn: In the film, she and her paramour came here to ogle all the bling and get a free ring from a Cracker Jack box engraved. While the free engraving isn’t likely anymore, it costs nothing to ride the manned elevator up the landmark building, gaze at sparkling trinkets, or spritz their signature perfumes. And if you are in the market for a bit of celebratory sparkle, plenty of engagement and anniversary rings are at the ready on the second floor.

8. See the city from Top of the Rock.

Photo by Joe Hun via Flickr.

Photo by Joe Hun via Flickr.

Thanks to “An Affair to Remember” and “Sleepless in Seattle,” we all think of the Empire State Building when it comes to race-to-get-the-girl movie montages. But as plenty of New Yorkers will tell you, the views from the Empire State Building are second-rate. Why? You”re missing an essential part of the city line if you’re sitting in it. Instead, better skyline views can be found at the Top of the Rock, Rockefeller Center’s observation deck. Here you’ll see all of the breathtaking skyscrapers of Midtown Manhattan — including the Empire State Building. Tip: In the wintertime, you can pair a visit to the Top of the Rock with a skate session on the rink at the ground level, which sits under Rockefeller Center’s famous tree, for a double dose of romance.

9. Dine at the River Café.

Rainy day in Brooklyn

A post shared by The River Cafe (@therivercafe) on

Plenty of romance can be found strolling around the city, but what about those that want to take it easy and be wined and dined? The River Café is your answer. Here you’ll find the same outstanding views you would get from the base of the Brooklyn Bridge or from Jane’s Carousel, but they’re paired with a robust wine list and dishes like sautéed Maine sea scallops with pork belly. The dining room itself extends off the end of a pier under the bridge, giving a panorama of the entire cityscape and a close-up to every passing sailboat. Don’t neglect to close out the meal with a miniature chocolate version of the Brooklyn Bridge paired with a raspberry sorbet.

10. Wander through the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Photo by Shinya Suzuki via Flickr.

Photo by Shinya Suzuki via Flickr.

Central Park will always be the green heart of Manhattan, but the crowds and vendors do have a way of breaking the mood. Instead, head to Brooklyn where this garden gives a sweet escape from NYC’s honking yellow cabs. Couples often make a beeline for the Rose Garden or the peonies, when in season, but Daffodil Hill and the Lily Pool are equally photogenic spots. Other places worth an arm-in-arm stroll include the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden and Shakespeare Garden, where greenery worthy of an English cottage is planted with all manner of flora that references the bard’s many star-crossed lovers.

Top Honeymoon Registries for Newlyweds https://www.oyster.com/articles/top-honeymoon-registries-for-newlyweds/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/top-honeymoon-registries-for-newlyweds/#respond Mon, 03 Apr 2017 15:49:04 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/articles/58561-top-honeymoon-registries-for-newlyweds/

Hotels in this story

1. Honeyfund

https://www.instagram.com/p/BQUWXD1ATHq

The difference between asking for cash gifts and creating a honeymoon registry for deposits may be a small one, but the latter reassures people that their money will be spent on travel rather than your year-end tax bill. Honeyfund is arguably the largest crowdfunding honeymoon registry out there, thanks to its customizable couples’ pages and lack of fees. Couples can create their own website to attract gifts. Plus, they can add pictures to their honeymoon story on a variety of templates to give guests an idea of where they hope to travel and the things they want to do while there.

Fees: Honeyfund is a free service (unless you upgrade your web template), which encourages guests to send cash or checks. Unless guests choose to gift via PayPal, which takes a 2.8 percent charge, the service comes without fees.

2. Wanderable

https://www.instagram.com/p/BQ5liCEFX94/

Think Squarespace for honeymoons: Wanderable offers a range of slick-looking templates for couples to create a registry that reflects them as a duo. It also allows couples to add in specifics. From snorkeling in the Maldives to couples’ massages in Santorini, Wanderable is a sweet way to let guests know that they’re buying couples memories that will last.

Fees: All gifts made with a credit card incur a 2.50 percent charge deducted from the gift amount. Plus, the gift-giver is charged  2.50 percent and .99 cents upon checkout. Registry owners have the option to absorb all fees except the .99 cents.

3. Traveler's Joy

https://www.instagram.com/p/BRd5HT7jHT8/

Travel agent-free and devoid of any pre-existing itineraries, Traveler’s Joy allows registry owners to do it all their way. One of the first breed of honeymoon registries, the site is super-customizable and geared towards inviting guests into the whole honeymoon experience. Couples add experiences, anecdotes, and dream destination ideas, and guests can contribute towards making it happen.

Fees: Traveler’s Joy doesn’t make its registry owners affiliate themselves with specific travel agents, so couples are free to work out the most cost effective deals for them. However, all gifts made with a credit card incur a 2.95 percent charge deducted from the gift amount. Plus, the gift-giver is also charged 2.95 percent and 99 cents upon checkout. Registry owners also have the option to give all credit card fees to the guest, or, alternatively, choose to deduct all fees from the gift amount.

4. Airfare Registries

https://www.instagram.com/p/BSG0Eh0jyoW/

Flights can be one of the largest expenditures for travelers, so contributions that specifically apply to airlines work well. Companies like Flight Centre and United Airlines (registry owners must sign up to become Mileage Plus members) have dedicated wedding gift registries, while Delta and American Airlines allow contributions to air mile accounts. If some guests travel a lot for business and happen to have a few thousand air miles to spare, this method benefits newlywed couples and allows the giver to offer a generous gift.

Fees: Both Delta and American Airlines charge a tax of roughly 7.5 percent on the total amount of air miles purchased, as well as a small transaction fee.

5. NewlyWish

https://www.instagram.com/p/BRwLKDHlUD4/

While some honeymoon registries focus solely on honeymoons, others combine the traditional registry with the chance to contribute to experiences as well. Although some guests don’t mind giving cash and seeing that money spent on Nascar racing in Dallas or private cooking lessons at The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, others certainly will. That being said, having a traditional registry alongside a honeymoon fund serves both camps. We recommend NewlyWish, which offers a curated list of destination experiences that guests can purchase (think: hiking the Dalmatian Coast and ceviche and tequila tasting at the Viceroy Riviera Maya in addition to the aforementioned Nascar racing and cooking lessons).

Fees: Guests cough up a 2.5 percent transaction fee to contribute to the cash fund, which pays for travel experiences. Registry owners pay a 2.5 percent withdrawal fee.

6. Zola

https://www.instagram.com/p/BM_2p0wAkHL/

Zola is another great choice for appeasing guests who want to give traditional gifts as well as those who are happy to contribute towards travel. The slick, user-friendly site is helpful if you don’t quite know what you want or need. For example, it curates pre-existing registries for couples at different stages in their lives. The same curated approach applies to the Experience section, which calculates the cost of anything from kayaking in Seattle to DJ lessons in Miami

Fees: Zola adds a 2.5 percent fee on credit card transactions, but does not charge registry owners a withdrawal fee.

9 Divine Hotels That Were Once Churches or Monasteries https://www.oyster.com/articles/9-divine-hotels-that-were-once-churches-or-monasteries/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/9-divine-hotels-that-were-once-churches-or-monasteries/#respond Tue, 28 Feb 2017 14:00:02 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/articles/57708-9-divine-hotels-that-were-once-churches-or-monasteries/

1. Kruisherenhotel Maastricht

Gothic to the core, the exterior of the Kruisherenhotel Maastricht seems far more likely to draw pious church-goers than posh fashionistas. Yet it’s the latter that tend to come on vacation here, drawn by the gorgeous mix of modern decor with 15th-century architecture. Nowhere is the juxtaposition more apparent than the Kruisheren Restaurant, which is placed in the former nave of the church. Here, molded plastic chairs and bright red accents balance the vaulted ceilings and frescos. But even humble hallways have arched windows broadcasting the building’s rich history. A futuristic glass elevator connects the whole structure, only heightening the contrast.

2. Stanbrook Abbey Hotel

Once the home of a silent order of monks, the Stanbrook Abbey Hotel has retained a deep serenity and several details that point to its 16th-century roots. Timber beams, deeply etched herringbone floors, and a few stained-glass details provide a foundation for the hotel’s atmospheric look. This is embellished to the hilt with canopy chairs, squat baroque dressers, and fainting couches that match the mood (if not the exact era) of the building. Given all these romantic details, the property tends to draw plenty of destination weddings that can make use of the cloisters as a venue for both the spiritual ceremony and the boisterous celebration.

3. Martin's Patershof

Martin’s Patershof has zero interest in hiding its neo-Gothic origins. Its red-brick exterior, topped with a portrait of the Virgin Mary and a stunning rose window, looks ready to kick off Sunday service—all that’s missing is the choir. But once inside, the tidy look of a contemporary hotel takes form, complete with white-tile floors and a cream-and-ebony front desk. Still, its church origins are never far from sight, as windows tapered to a tall point can be spotted throughout the interiors along with plenty of stained-glass ornamentation. These details follow into most of the rooms, including the Best of the Home Suite, which is topped with incredible rib vaulting and surrounded by a semicircle of stained glass.

4. Castel Monastero

As the name implies, Castel Monastero offers a twofer: In its long history, it was both a medieval castle and a monastery. The impressive structure dates all the way back to the 11th century, and it’s surrounded by a number of little ancillary buildings and even sweeping vineyards—an entirely appropriate crop given the connection between monks and winemaking. Interiors are done up in a neutral, contemporary look with loads of dark leather and beige textiles, letting the historic touches like rich wood beams and dense stone walls take the spotlight. But it’s the little details, like the old well festooned with flowers, that truly make the place feel lifted out of a storybook.

5. The Priory Hotel

It may seem like these stunning church-to-hotel conversions are strictly the stuff of European getaways. But you don’t need a passport to stay at The Priory Hotel. This former Benedictine monastery is now a charming boutique hotel located in Pittsburgh (surprise!). Its red-brick facade, lined with arched windows, is still crowned with a chiseled cross, and pink and white roses thread through the wrought-iron gate around the entrance. Inside, public spaces reflect the hushed and stately look of traditional drawing rooms (though the occasional ATM and vending machine break the mood a bit). Rooms, with Oriental rugs and heavy drapes, also display a deeply Old World atmosphere. But the most scenic spot has to be the hotel’s event space, the Grand Hall, which was once a Catholic church and still sports the original organ and Byzantine-style hanging lights.

6. Belmond Hotel Monasterio

Move over, Machu Picchu! The Belmond Hotel Monasterio offers another excellent reason to head to Peru. Layers of history are present here. The site itself was once an Inca palace, and the hotel’s building dates back to the 16th century when it was a monastery. In traditional, Spanish style, columned archways block in scenic courtyards, complete with a fountain and 300-year-old tree. Certain public spaces have been altered to reflect a hotel’s function (though reception still looks more like a backdrop for “Game of Thrones” than a check-in at a Hilton). However, the on-site chapel looks to be perfectly preserved from its early days. Heaped up with gilded religious artifacts, it’s like having a museum on the grounds.

7. The Augustine Hotel Prague

The Augustine is proof that opposites attract. It pulls off a tricky partnership, marrying an austere former monastery with chic metal-and-glass modernism. The result is a streamlined, striking blend between old and new, with a few baroque details—painted ceilings, tufted fainting couches—that add a little sparkle. Set in Prague’s Mala Strana neighborhood, and surrounded by historic architecture, The Augustine still looks like a house of worship on the outside, with whitewashed exteriors topped with terra-cotta tiles. Cobblestone alleyways with wrought-iron streetlights lead the way to the entrance. Beyond that, an interior courtyard displays the union perfectly with a series of columned arches on one side and a sleek, glass-enclosed dining room on the other.

8. San Domenico Palace Hotel

Time marches on, though it certainly doesn’t seem that way at San Domenico Palace Hotel. The “modern” addition here was a wing that was added in 1896, and the original Garden Wing dates all the way back to the 15th century. This former Dominican monastery has retained so much of its historical details—a stay here feels akin to time travel. Cloistered courtyards bordered with lanterns, craggy stone walls, and arched entryways feel unchanged after centuries of use. Amazingly, the building’s original chapel has also been preserved, with ceiling frescos on display. Decor, which includes antiques galore, coffered ceilings, and rich textiles, does nothing to modernize the atmosphere (though mercifully, amenities like flat-screen TVs provide modern comforts).

9. Belmond Villa San Michele

Situated in the Italian countryside, this luxury hotel and former monastery runs down a fantasy checklist: Tuscan location, check. Terraced gardens, check. Views of Florence, check. Renaissance facade, check. In fact, the main building, which dates back to the 15th century, even has facades attributed to Michelangelo, making sleeping here practically a night in the museum. Interiors still have beautifully preserved architectural details, such as arched entryways and frescos, which are paired with plenty of antique furnishings and chandeliers. But the grounds are equally captivating. Surrounded by lemon trees, climbing ivy, and weathered statues, the outdoor spaces beam guests back six centuries—apart from the pool, a welcome modern addition.

Top 8 Places for a Destination Wedding https://www.oyster.com/articles/top-8-places-for-a-destination-wedding/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/top-8-places-for-a-destination-wedding/#respond Tue, 14 Feb 2017 13:30:02 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/articles/57456-top-8-places-for-a-destination-wedding/

1. Hawaii

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. At least that’s our motto when it comes to having a destination wedding in Hawaii. Sure, you’ll be competing with the roughly 20,000 other people having weddings there (according to a 2012 statistic), but the stunning beaches, aloha spirit, and abundance of leisure and recreational activities make it worth it. Plus, family and friends are more willing to pay that hefty flight charge for a chance to surf in Waikiki and hike Diamond Head.

High rollers should consider planning their ceremony at Travaasa Hana in Maui, while Royal Lahaina Resort offers a more affordable, yet undeniably stunning, setting for nuptials.

2. U.S. Virgin Islands

The Caribbean has long been a favorite for weddings among U.S. citizens, thanks to its year-round pleasant weather and picturesque island setting. While there are numerous spots to choose from, we love the U.S. Virgin Islands for its lovely marina backdrop that will certainly appeal to sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Plus, the currency is U.S. dollars, a passport isn’t required for Americans (though recommended), and the drinking age is 18 (sure to delight 18-to-20-year-olds invited).

Caneel Bay Resort is our top pick for an elegant wedding, but of course, romantic beachfront events do come at a cost. The more affordable Concordia Eco-Studios offers a breathtaking location and wedding services.

3. Florida Keys

Travelers looking for Caribbean-like weather without having to leave the continental U.S. should look at the Florida Keys. The string of islands are along the same latitudinal line as the Bahamas, but getting to the former is significantly cheaper. While it does have kitschy areas and hordes of tourists, it also offers excellent snorkeling, calm waters, delicious seafood, and fun nightlife. The Keys are also very gay-friendly, making it a particularly attractive spot for gay and lesbian weddings.

The luxurious Cheeca Lodge & Spa is a popular pick for weddings in Islamorada, while Sunset Key Cottages can help plan ceremonies in Key West.

4. Los Cabos, Mexico

Thanks to direct flights from several major U.S. cities, and easy wedding packages, getting married in Mexico can be a fairly painless affair. Though Cancun and Cozumel are viable options, we prefer Los Cabos for its recognizable rock formation Land’s End, gorgeous historic sites, and visible whale migration from January to March. Numerous all-inclusive resorts help keep costs in check (a major pro for guests), though some may be disappointed by how Americanized Cabo San Lucas is.

The Grand Solmar Land’s End Resort & Spa is an excellent pick for its stunning setting, though we love Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort & Spa for its adult-only policy and all-inclusive rates.

5. Tuscany, Italy

You might be surprised to find that the top country in Europe for American destination weddings is not the très romantique France, or even the easy-to-get-around England. Instead, Italy, which is arguably more romantic than cities like Paris, takes the number-one spot. While the Amalfi Coast and Lake Como are breathtaking coastal spots, we’re going to suggest Tuscany for an Italian wedding. The expansive rolling hills, abundant wineries, and thermal spas make it a dream come true for countryside-loving couples.

There are numerous scenic options to choose from, but Castel Monastero—a historic property surrounded by vineyards—and Fonteverde Tuscan Resort & Spa—an exclusive stay with numerous spa facilities—are some of the best.

6. Fiji

A more convenient option for Kiwis and Aussies, Fiji is a gorgeous country in the South Pacific, made up of hundreds of islands. It offers everything from backpacker-heaven beaches to exquisite luxury resorts that go for over $1,000/night, plus everything in between. If you’re looking to have a wedding in a honeymoon-worthy spot, this is it. It’s known for its marine-life-filled coral reefs, rugged terrain, and genuinely friendly locals and hotel staff that seem to perpetually have a smile on their face.

The InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa is a large, amenity-filled property situated along a beautiful beach on the main island. If only adults are attending the wedding, Lomani Island Resort is a romantic and peaceful property, while still providing a ton of free activities.

7. Ireland

You don’t have to be of Irish descent to have a wedding in Ireland‘s jaw-dropping countryside or stunning castles. A ceremony in Ireland means the bride, groom, and guests will get to experience both culture and scenery on their trip, without the cookie-cutter presentation found in many popular destination wedding spots. Whether the event is in Dublin, Galway, or Cork, travelers should schedule some time on the links, drink Guinness with locals in a pub, and visit gorgeous spots like the Cliffs of Moher and Ring of Kerry.

If a historic manor amid sweeping greenery sounds like the ideal “I do” spot, consider the upscale Ballynahinch Castle Hotel. If a grand city dame is more your speed, The Shelbourne Dublin, A Renaissance Hotel is an iconic property with a superb location right on St. Stephen’s Green.

8. Jamaica

The Caves/Oyster

Couples looking for a bit of culture may prefer the still tourist-friendly Jamaica. Yes, there are lots of honeymooners and families, but visitors are guaranteed to see live reggae performances, roadside shacks serving up delectable jerk chicken, and locals jumping off cliffs. Whether in the more commercialized Montego Bay or laid-back Negril, there’s a spot suited to most.

If you’re having an intimate wedding, look to The Caves for your ceremony, as the cliffside property has just 11 cottages. Though it’s a bit of a trek to get to, Jakes Hotel, Villa & Spa is a hippy-chic boutique property offering personalized events. But you better book far in advance for one of these popular wedding spots.

1. The Charm After the Storm

Brianna and Kevin were set to have their wedding at the upscale resort Madden’s on Gull Lake in Minnesota when, a week before the big day, hurricane-force winds ripped through the region. Kevin, who has a background in hospitality, had previously joked that he’d be able to plan a wedding in a week, but now had to make good on that claim. Luckily, Brianna’s mother lives in a house across the lake from the resort. Unfortunately, however, the storm had also raged through their backyard upending several trees, including a 90-foot silver maple. Plus, the house was left without power or running water.

Madden’s needed to close for a month for repairs, leaving several out-of-town guests without a place to stay. Friends and family members pitched in to find available hotel rooms as well as open rooms and couches in nearby houses. Several local businesses stepped up to help. Lincoln Hospitality Group donated beer and wine as a wedding gift and Zorbaz restaurant provided a bartender. Last-minute preparations included removing the 90-foot silver maple that was lying over the makeshift aisle leading down to the handmade birch arbor. “The wedding was, quite simply, amazing!” says Kevin. “All details were covered, everyone had a blast, and we danced until we couldn’t dance any more.” Putting together the wedding was nerve-wracking, but the triumph of the celebration brought the families closer together.

2. Winner, Winner Second Dinner

For many hotels, weddings turn into an assembly line that churns out hundreds of dinners at a time. At one wedding reception, the hotel made the mistake of cooking the wrong entree from the menu. “Rather than just shrug it off and get compensation later, the bride insisted they cook the whole thing from scratch,” wrote one Reddit commenter. And having to recook one hundred entrees takes time. The reception was brought to a halt and guests had to wait two to three hours to eat. Plus, the speeches were pushed back to the end of the evening. Most guests waited in the bar and then went home without seeing the couple or dancing. “That marriage didn’t last,” according to the Reddit commenter.

3. The Fighting Irish

A struggling Irish hotel needed more bookings and agreed to host a wedding that involved notorious crime families. The families and the wedding were both enormous. “The bride asked us not to serve vodka, which was making people pretty angry as they were all in for the vodka and Redbull,” wrote one Reddit commenter, who was a barman at the hotel at the time.

However, the raucous crowd was satiated with hard cider, and the hotel had plenty of it. About two hours in, the day went to hell. All of the women went straight for the door and the floor manager removed waitresses as soon as she realized what was about to happen. The guests began brawling. A driver smashed a car into the hotel’s emergency exit. Guests threw chairs through the windows. The staff hid behind the bar and in the kitchen while the fight extended into the lobby and other parts of the hotel. The police and security were called, but there weren’t enough guards to put an end to the fight. “Finally when it was over we had to comp every other guest. We had a shed full of cider, which we essentially had to do three-for-two offers on for months.”

The hotel staff spent the rest of the night cleaning up glass, blood, and more. “The place never recovered. We had to cancel the next three weddings due to the damage, and once word got around we couldn’t get any more. Locals avoided the place.” Supposedly the hotel was sold six months later at a huge loss.

4. Love Spot

Vanessa Valedon, event manager at the W Retreat & Spa on Vieques Island, was called to the bridal suite because of an emergency. When she arrived, the photographer and maid of honor showed her the wedding dress: a strapless white Romona Keveza raw silk gown with a big oil stain on the bodice. It had been hanging from the sliding door railing, which was kept well greased because the beachfront doors would otherwise get stuck. The bride was away getting her makeup done.

“The photographer looked at me with pain in her eyes as she asked, ‘You can save it, right?’” says Valedon. The event manger took a deep breath and hesitantly said, “I’ll do my best.” Valedon Googled what to do. She returned with an arsenal of wipes and then noticed the room contained clear eye makeup remover. She asked the mother of the bride for permission and warned she might use up all of the makeup remover. After 45 minutes of gentle dabbing, she removed the stain and let the dress soak. The next step involved using a towel and hair dryer. By the time the bride returned, she had no idea anything had happened.

“The next day, when I saw the bride, she came up laughing and gave me a big hug,” says Valedon. “She told me they had told her the story at the end of the night and she hadn’t noticed anything all night. The wedding was perfect and they were really happy.”

5. Black-and-White and Technicolor

Kristie Garduño had visions of a black-and-white wedding at SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel in Pismo Beach. “I don’t care if you show up in a tuxedo or jeans, as long as they are black or white,” she told guests beforehand. However, her fiance’s parents were flying in from out of the country and didn’t speak English. “I delegated him to relay the message to his parents,” she said. A bit stressed about being on a tight budget, Garduño saw most of her vision come to life until her future in-laws appeared. “My husband had not told them anything about the attire and they were wearing every color in the rainbow except for black or white. They stood out in a way I can’t describe,” she said. She handled the tonal tragedy of the wedding pictures like any modern wedding planner — with Photoshop and a professional graphic designer. “Now my entire wedding party is dressed in black and white.”

6. A MacGyver Marriage

During a wedding at a W Hotel on Vieques Island, a bride and her mother had a nasty fight. The mother left the property and, to make matters worse, had the wedding dress with her. With the ceremony timed to take place in 20 minutes, at sunset, the bride was understandably panicking. Plus, no lighting had been set up for a night ceremony.

W Hotel sales manager Rachel Abrams ran to the hotel boutique and grabbed every white dress in stock. Unfortunately, all of the options were too big for the petite bride. “We settled on a simple white cotton dress with spaghetti straps,” recalls Abrams. Hoping to create a dress that looked good from at least one angle in photos, the staff went into MacGyver mode.

“We found a gold sequin spandex sash and cut it in half to make a belt so the dress had a more secure fit,” says Abrams. “We used staples to secure the back of the belt and tucked it into the dress to hide any evidence. We then used staples to hem the dress and create a custom length.” The resulting ensemble looked surprisingly professional and the wedding pictures turned out beautifully. “Unless you looked very closely, you couldn’t tell that this was not the dress she had originally planned for!”

7. Musical Marital Meltdown

During a marriage ceremony, the officiant asked the guests, which included Reddit commenter Jerlko, if they had any objections — you know, the “speak now or forever hold your peace” line. As if responding to a sitcom cue, an ex-girlfriend emerged from behind one of the curtains and started singing about why the groom shouldn’t get married. Believe it or not, it worked and he agreed — in song, too. “They had no shame,” writes Jerlko. The song detailed how they would meet at the back door and leave together, tossing aside the bride into a puddle of tears.

1. Hawaii

The Kalani Hawaii Hotel on Oahu

The Kalani Hawaii Hotel on Oahu

According to a survey conducted by The Knot, Hawaii is the third most popular destination among American couples planning a wedding abroad. (N.B. In this study, Hawaii was considered an international destination, unlike the other 49 states.) Thirty-three percent of couples opt for Oahu as the spot for the ceremony, making it the most popular island for a dream wedding.

As for the negative aspect that goes with Hawaii…well, there really isn’t one because — at just 9.1 percent — Hawaiian weddings have the joint fifth lowest divorce rate of any state. What’s more, if things do go badly on the islands, a divorce filing fee is a relatively inexpensive $175, which Nicolas Cage would know as he divorced Lisa Marie Presley just 108 days after their Hawaii wedding.

2. Las Vegas

The casino at the MGM Grand

The casino at the MGM Grand

Elvis and Priscilla, Angelina and Billy Bob, Demi and Bruce; Las Vegas has had its fair share of celebrity marriages that have failed to go the distance, which is no surprise since Vegas is the divorce capital of the U.S. Think long and hard about whether you want the Little White Wedding Chapel to host your nuptials and remember, 13.9 percent of all adults in Vegas have been divorced. Just think about Britney — her marriage to her childhood friend Jason Alexander is one of the shortest celebrity Vegas weddings on record; their “relationship” was annulled after just 55 hours

3. Florida

Magic Kingdom, Disney World, Orlando/Oyster

Magic Kingdom, Disney World Orlando

Nearly half of all U.S. destination weddings take place in the top three locations of Florida, Nevada and California, but Florida is the host of the most nuptials, with 22 percent of couples surveyed heading to the land of theme parks, sunshine, and oranges for the wedding of their dreams. On a bum note, Florida has the fifth highest divorce rate out of all fifty states, at a high four of every thousand people. Not that you should let that stop you planning your dream wedding at Walt Disney World; according to Disney By The Numbers, 15,000 weddings have taken place at Walt Disney World since 1991, although the number of those that ended with “happy ever after” is unclear. What we can say is that Disney beats the McDonalds Wedding Party every time.

4. Jamaica

The Rockhouse Hotel, Jamaica

The Rockhouse Hotel, Jamaica

All you have to do is stay on the island for 24 hours and pay a $50 fee and you’re eligible to be married in Jamaica. But we wouldn’t recommend meeting a stranger on day one of your Jamaican vacation and committing for life on day two, because you might quickly find yourself part of the Caribbean island’s high divorce rate of 9.4 of every thousand people. However, don’t be put off by the figures; there must be a reason why one in three American couple destination weddings take place in Jamaica. The hope of sun, sea, sand…and longevity?

5. Mexico

The Beach at Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun

The Beach at Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun

Of all Mexico’s many stunning potential wedding destinations, Cancun on the Caribbean coast is the most popular among U.S. couples. And so it should be with a divorce rate of only 15 percent. Whether you opt for a beachfront service or an elegant all-white ceremony in Cabo, you can enjoy the day with the knowledge that wedding in Mexico means you won’t have scary divorce statistics hanging over your nuptials. Marriage Trends in Latin America suggests the reasons for the low rates of divorce in Mexico — and other Latin American countries — are a mixture of a lack of progressive laws, the value placed on the family unit, and the strong influence of Catholicism in the country. However, it’s interesting to see that the U.S. influence (i.e. a likelihood of divorce) is most apparent closer to home, as northern Mexico states lining the American border have a higher rate of divorce than those to the south.

6. Italy

The pool at the Covo Dei Saraceini

The pool at the Covo Dei Saraceini

It’s not just A-listers who head to Italy and the Amalfi Coast when they want a spectacular destination wedding; the country is the favorite European location for weddings among Americans. Twenty-six percent of European destination weddings from the U.S. take place in Italy. As well as Amalfi, Tuscany, Rome and the Lakes are popular spots for couples looking for a wedding with rustic charm. Italy is another country where the influence of the church is a factor in keeping divorce rates low. According to the United Nations Statistical Division, the figure is 0.8 iof every thousand people in Italy, a country where — until 2015 it took three years to get a divorce. (It’s now only three months.) One caveat: While the divorce rate may be low, a survey by American Consumer Opinion found that Italy has the lowest percentage of happily married couples of eleven countries recorded; on the flip side, the U.S. had the second highest percentage of couples satisfied with their lot.

7 Times It’s Worth Using a Travel Agent https://www.oyster.com/articles/7-times-its-worth-using-a-travel-agent/ https://www.oyster.com/articles/7-times-its-worth-using-a-travel-agent/#respond Fri, 09 Sep 2016 14:00:10 +0000 https://www.oyster.com/articles/54994-7-times-its-worth-using-a-travel-agent/

1. When You're Booking During Holiday and Peak Travel Times

Summer’s coming to an end, which means holiday travel is right around the corner. The general rule of thumb is to book earlier rather than later to avoid last-minute fees and a surge in airfare. Knowing when to book can help offset some of these peak season travel costs. This is where a travel agent’s help can come in handy. “While we encourage our clients to use the internet to look for deals, what we try to do is dig through everything and weed out and validate what they’re already finding,” said Lovick. “There’s so much information out there and it can be overwhelming, so we try to help get you booked with the best deal possible.”

2. When You're Booking a Group Trip

Restaurants that are willing to accommodate large groups often employ some pretty special staffers -- who deserve a little tip.

While the expression the more the merrier may be true for many things, when it comes to booking in bulk, the logistics can be tricky. What you may not realize is that travel agents can get you far better rates if you book as a group. Plus, it takes the headache out of organizing everything yourself. “Multigenerational travelers are one of the best examples of this,” said Lovick. “How are you going to please grandma and grandpa, middle-aged parents, and kids all in one vacation? That’s where our services come in. We talk to the client and ask the right questions — things they might not have thought of — and go from there.”

3. When You're Booking an International Trip

Whether it’s your first time traveling abroad or you’re a seasoned international itinerant, having a travel agent at your disposal can pay dividends when it comes to jet-setting overseas. Visa and passport requirements vary from country to country and working with an expert can help facilitate these issues prior to departure. “We help people simplify things,” said Lovick. “For instance, we had a client who wanted to book six European countries in 10 days. We talked it through with them…and then we problem solve.”

4. When You're Booking a Cruise

Travel agents can often find deals you wouldn’t have access to otherwise, especially when it comes to cruising. From drink packages and shore excursions to booking reservations at one of the specialty restaurants, agents take care of the nitty-gritty details that can easily get sold out or may go overlooked. “We know where and when certain sales are happening and are often able to find good deals and work with cruise lines to pull strings for people that they wouldn’t be able to do on their own,” said Lovick.

5. When You're Booking a Honeymoon or Destination Wedding

Planning a wedding can be stressful and costly, which is why it’s best to put the onus on someone else when it comes to booking the honeymoon. “People have this picture in their mind of what they want their honeymoon trip to look like. Hiring a travel agent can really help them get what they’re looking for. I will always encourage people to do their own research and have fun while thinking and planning their perfect honeymoon. Bu we take the pressure off some of the more technical parts of booking it,” said Lovick.

6. When You're Booking a Special Interest Trip

According to Lovick, travel agents act as specialists and no matter where you want to go or what you want to do, she works to find the best agent to help meet your needs. “There’s somebody for everybody and it’s not always the same person,” said Lovick. “As long as I’ve been doing this, and as much as I’ve traveled, the first thing a client wants to know is if you’ve been to the place they’re going. You need to be familiar with the area in order to give the best recommendations. So, if you’re going hiking in South Africa or heading to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, we match you with the agent who can best speak to those particular areas.”

7. When You're Booking a Trip to Disney World

Magic Kingdom, Disney World, Orlando/Oyster

The most magical place on earth is also one of the best examples of when booking through a travel agent really pays off.
